Alabama Pride Event Cancelled

According to Chad Bergmeier, Travis Fulton's manager on the UG:
We signed a contract for this fight 2 months ago ...I was told all the money to promote this event was gathered and ready to pay for the event (fighters included) before 1 ticket was sold ...Yesterday I find out otherwise...As soon as Fulton's plane lands we are told the show is now cancelled ...These guys could have fought on other shows this weekend ...They could have stayed home with their families. Anyways, today we get told that Rod will pay them next week ...Fulton gets a flight home in the morning to Iowa in hopes that this is made right next week ...Guys, pay these fighters what they were promised and do the right thing!
[UPDATE]: Sherdog.com reports that Thunder Promotions cancelled the event due to poor ticket sales.

Monte Cox:

From what I know the promoter is Rod Ricciardi… and he has been changing matchmakers and main events ever since the show was announced… he is the one responsible for making good with the fighters.

From what I’ve been told by a couple of the fighters, he has already come up with multiple excuses for why the show was shut down… everything from tonight’s Moosin show, to Jeff Monson maybe fighting in Brazil, to low ticket sales, to Felix (another of the matchmakers) calling it off too soon…

I’m also told fighters were encouraged to turn in their ticket money from tickets they sold early… hopefully, that will not come back to haunt them. And, hopefully no sponsors paid their money before the event happened…

Rod Ricciardi… doubt that name will get mentioned again around our sport. Good riddance!
Monson said he should have known there was a problem when he asked for a $2,000 advance on his purse a week or so ago and Ricciardi started coming up with a variety of excuses why it never happened… all the time assuring him his word was his bond and promising he would be paid.

Others were worried about Ricciardi’s finances when local fighters were asked early in the week to turn in money from tickets they sold… something that normally happens at weigh-ins or at the show.

Tom Stedham:

Chad,

I am Tom Stedham. I was “hired” as the booker for the local side of this show. I wasn’t paid, either. Now we’re hearing that Rod isn’t paying anybody.

Lawsuits are being prepared and I want to make sure you talk to us! We are all pretty pissed!

All of the Alabama pro fighters were stiffed, and Rod has lawyered up.

Unfortunately, this can be the consequences of dealing w/ these small-time promoters.
Too bad, I like seeing people get Monson’d.

I hear that.

Not that I condone facism or any ism for that matter. Isms are in my opinion, not good. A person shouldn't believe in an ism, he should believe in himself.

I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me". Good point there, after all he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. Wouldn't change the fact I have to bum rides off of people.

Isn’t Monson fighting Glover Teixeira at Bitetti Combat Saturday night?

That would’ve been a helluva schedule fighting in Alabama and then in Brazil on the same night.

Didn’t Monson once fight in three continents in like five days or something?

North America, Europe – Northen Ireland and Japan?

Wait, three continents, 15 days.

Win Sergei Maslobojev Submission (Anaconda Choke) CW – Decade
Win Roy Nelson Decision (Unanimous) SRP – March Badness

Wow, I knew Kharitonov and Nelson were close together but damn… Jeff is the man :)

So funny that Nelson was in his corner against Kharitonov two weeks after they fought (and Monson robbed him).

It’s obvious what happened.

DMX tried to put a curse on this card after they wouldn’t let him work the fight, but he doesn’t know what MMA is, so he put a curse on the UFC. He had so much rage saved up for this card, that his UFC curse is working on this card, as it should, since this is the cause of all of DMX’s strife and the reason the curse even exists.

Not really surprised at the poor ticket sales. I don’t know what audience they were shooting for in the Birmingham market. I’m a hardcore fan and wasn’t planning on going unless a ticket fell into my lap, and it’s not like Jeff Monson or Travis Fulton was going to pull in tons of casual fans. The only attendees I heard from were going because of local fighters like the Zapatas. And while they have some dedicated fans, they weren’t going to draw enough people to make a big arena like the BJCC worthwhile.

This is just one of the many risks that fighters take when fighting in non-sanctioned events. It is precisely because of shit like this that SACs demand all purse money be put in escrow before they will sanction an event.

Do you know whether Alabama's to-be-formed boxing commission will also cover MMA?

Anyway, with Coolio fighting, I just don’t understand how ticket sales were poor. I hope he didn’t already take a fantastic voyage to Birmingham before the fight was canceled.

The ticket prices were way to high for me to buy one

but I was thinking about walking up that day just to see the Zapata brothers.

It probally also didn’t help that butterbeans retirment fight was a day earlier
