Clip of the Day: Mariusz Pudzianowski's MMA Debut
In case you somehow managed to avoid the news: legendary Polish strongman competitor Mariusz Pudzianowski made his MMA debut at KSW 12 in Warsaw today, taking on Marcin "El Testosteron" Najman. The fight had massive buzz in Poland - it even made the evening news on Polsat - and record-setting ratings are expected when the numbers are tallied.
So how did the beloved Pudzian fare? Well, apart from his wacky attempt at "boxing" in the first 15 seconds of the bout, about as well as one could have hoped. Pudzianowski used his massive tree trunks legs to chop the base out from beneath Najman, sending the former pro boxer stumbling across the ring. From there, it was just a matter of pounding away with brutal hammerfists until the terrified ref jumped in for the stoppage.
Where the strongman's MMA career goes from here is anyone's guess, but from the sound of Pudzianowski's post-fight comment, this wasn't just a one-off thing.
Big props to MMArocks.pl for all of their coverage of this fight.

This “Horse meat/steroid” thing is played out. Why do internet nerds think that if a world class athlete puts on weight then he must be on steroids? Quit hatin’.

What past results do you have on Mir & Overeem? If A-Rod uses steroids then Frank Mir must too?
"True strength is not always shown through victory. Stand up, try again and display strength of heart."

Well if you are going to use the fact that they are world class athletes as a reason to assume that they could make those kind of gains clean then its also reasonable to assume that since other world class athletes do roids then maybe they might as well.

Not that I have strong feelings either way on Mir,
but it’s kind of our job to observe these people and their careers. I mean, it’s kind of our definitive role.
And part of the reason we ‘think’ that if you put on 25lbs over the course of four months (and it’s obviously all muscle), you’re somehow skirting the edge of legal competition, it’s because many of us are experienced physical competitors ourselves. I did the 15-20k calorie protein diets when I was working out for 4-6 hours per day and couldn’t put hardly anything on (my strength went through the roof, but the size didn’t follow).
I would guess most guys here who have competed will have similar testimonies. For a guy like Lesnar, he’s looked like that his whole life, so if he’s cheating it’s been the same cheat for 10-15 years, and he’s beating the ever-evolving system, so it’s a dead issue. But Frank Mir, who has always been a suspect physical specimen (albeit possessing an impressive frame), suddenly becomes the second largest HW in the UFC?
And forgetting personal experience, which could be discarded because maybe I’m just not on the same genetic plane as these guys (well, certainly I’m not on the same plane, but whatever). We observe other world-class athletes in their chosen professions/sports, and this type of thing doesn’t simply happen. If it did, it wouldn’t garner ANY attention.
Smells horsey.

That was the point I was trying to make. Mir has not gained 25 lbs of pure muscle.

The NSAC only seems to test at the event, so everyone fighting knows that all they have to is plan their cycle and piss clean by the fight date. How many people where randomly tested at 106 leading up to the fight? According to Ivan Trembow:
“I previously asked the NSAC’s Executive Director, Keith Kizer, the following questions about the out-of-competition drug testing for UFC 106: “How many fighters on the UFC 106 card were tested under the NSAC’s out-of-competition drug testing program, what are the names of the aforementioned fighters, and what are the test results of those fighters?” Kizer’s response: “None.” That has been the case for the vast majority of events since the program was instituted."
so if you wanted to use PEDs in the UFC it would still be relatively easy to get away with it.

Right, but my greater point is
that he’s made tremendous physical gains in muscle mass in a very short period of time.
It’s indisputable. We can dispute how he did it, but he’s put on way more muscle than most people are capable of, and if he’s always been capable of this, then why wait so long to do it?
I like Mir as a fighter, I don’t think he’s in the inner-circle of the UFC HW division, but he’s just on the outside. Improved takedowns or standup and he might break into that group. I’m pulling for him to do that.
But before that happens, I want a LHK from Kongo to send him to the locker room ;)

I wonder where all the overeem haters are saying how his weight gain was impossible to make without enhancements….just sayin’

25lbs in 4ish months compared to Overeem evolving into Ubereem, which involved 35ish lbs over 18-24 months. I guess it’s a fair comparison, but neither of them have ever pissed hot, so…
we should say its more like 20 lbs, because he may notve shit at the weigh in
so really, 20ish lbs in 4 months isnt hard at all considering he said he hadnt lifted weights in years… especially with the right supplements, and i dont mean roids i think that Mir is too self righteous to ever use roids

Pudzianowski's like an unpolished diamond.
He clearly fights with the same intensity and killer instinct that he competed with on Worlds Strongest Man. I think he can have real success if he surrounds himself with the right people when training. Doesn’t he have a karate/boxing background?
I believe he has a Karate background but theres Karate and then theres “Karate”. Theres a big difference.
Agreed
While I’m not sure that it’s comparable to Lyoto Machida differentiating between “Machida Karate” and, well, “other karate”… what were you referring to exactly?
Is it just a coincedence that Brock Lesnar was fighting a mysterious illness around the time this guy emerged in the MMA world ?

I love the Diet section on his entry on Wikipedia
My energy comes from my diet. Breakfast is 10 eggs and 2-3 pounds of bacon. Between meals, I eat lots of candy…I need it for energy. Lunch, at 1 or 2 p.m., is a double meal of a Polish pork chop, sauerkraut and potatoes.
An hour later, I work out, then take lots of supplements: magnesium, creatine, amino acids, all that stuff, and more chocolate.
Dinner is whatever meat I can get: steaks, pork chops, bacon, plus more sauerkraut and potatoes. [After I work out] I have a protein shake and more chocolate.

His weight dropped 36 lb. training for this fight.
That is not the characteristic of someone on steroids.
Was he on steroids to get that big in the first place? Almost certainly. I think he tested positive at a strongman competition at least once. But his current trend doesn’t seem to indicate steroids at all (though he’d benefit tremendously from the accelerated recovery they offer).

‘I will scratch my right cheek with my index finger and leave my left hand low, while deceiving you into thinking I’m a wrestler with boxing ability with my wrestling shoes on, and then I will kick you in the leg.’ approach.
I would love to see him fight Kimbo just to see the look on Kimbo’s face.
Also if Pud could say in polish to Kimbo before the fight.. “You have my bread, I must break you.” that would be great.
I don't usually get into that "That was fixed" silliness, but...
Seriously, that guy is slow as crap and his opponent throw not one punch while he was lumbering in with his hands down. If that wasn’t fixed then his opponent is a tomato can of the highest tin content.
Really, you got "fix" out of that?
I saw a boxer who was intimidated by a meat mountain coming towards him, and was probably waiting for Pudz to make a mistake he could capitalize on. And is it so bad to fight a “can” in your MMA debut when you don’t even have a background in professional or collegiate combat sports? Remember that Lesnar’s debut two years ago was against a fighter who was 2-5 at the time and on a three fight skid.

Welcome to the future of MMA.
Huge freak show guys with little skill.
This future is home to men like Lesnar, Lashley, Pudzianowski.
And yes, yes, I know L & L are more skilled than this strong man but all they have are there wrestling and the fact they can actually, well…have enough flexibility to scratch their back.
How is that different from the beginning where it was just small guys with BJJ?
Wrestling is a very good skill to have for mma. It’s dominant now, but it won’t be forever. Someone will figure out a way to stop the big wrestlers, and then people will be saying that whatever that is is “the future of mma” until that gets figured out.
It is a lot different because in the beginning there wasn’t just small guys and BJJ, it was never like that except for the VERY beginning of UFC and then it was just Royce Gracie.
UFC and MMA as a whole has always been a melting pot, different styles and different sizes, and will always be, I was being sarastic with my “future of MMA” comment.
Obviously, I don’t think guys with little skill who look like Anklyosaurus have a future other than being a freak show.
This is just laughable.
If two giant freak shows fight, the one with more skill is likely to win.
The future will be filled with huge incredibly skilled freak shows. Theres nothing about being small and weak that makes skill more obtainable.

Nicely put.
The truth is, we’re at the point where size does matter in MMA. Boxing’s technical aspect has been refined for a few decades, so size has ‘always’ mattered there, but only recently have the technical aspects of MMA become refined to the point where an extra 20lbs of muscle can (and quite often does) make the difference between victory and humiliation.
A good big man beats a good little man. And we’re now at the point where the aforementioned 20lbs is the difference between big and little.
There is no such thing as innocence, only degrees of guilt.
