This would have been one of the deepest cards of the year. I am already nominating Fitch / Peirce to be snoozer of the night.

Diego USED to be at Jackson's

No need to worry about Vaseline here.

by 831 Son on Dec 11, 2009 12:01 PM EST up reply actions

Im joking… But Diego will definitely be “slippery”. BJ will still slap that ass.

The only guy who can beat BJ at 155 is Aldo.

I actually wanna see BJ go back up to 170 with his new strength and conditioning coaches – he did it all wrong last time. I think it would be a totally different fight.

by mmalogic on Dec 11, 2009 12:29 PM EST up reply actions

Aldo BJ would be interesting. And a BJ in shape would be cool to see at 170.

BUT I still want to see him fight 1 or 2 contenders at 170 before he could get another shot at ST Pierre. BJ vs Alves or BJ vs Kos would be awesome.

by BlueberryMuffin on Dec 11, 2009 12:46 PM EST up reply actions

Yus

..to him fighting some other contenders first. It would give the WW division a shot in the arm (though I do feel that it’s an underrated class as it is).

"I’m sorry. I didn’t drink last night, so I’m not funny today."
-Sakuraba

by Blackout612 on Dec 11, 2009 3:34 PM EST up reply actions

I agree.

The WW class is stiff as a board. While it doesn’t have tons of high-profile star power like LHW, it is absolutely stuffed with guys who are all at each other’s ability level.

Problem is, GSP is the best fighter on the planet right now. And it ain’t close to #2.

There is no such thing as innocence, only degrees of guilt.

by misterjonez on Dec 11, 2009 5:44 PM EST up reply actions

What would be a totally different fight? BJ has nothing for GSP. And this time, Penn would actually have to earn his shot by beating guys like Alves, Fitch, and Koscheck, all of which are bad matchups for Penn

by Hardcharger on Dec 11, 2009 12:53 PM EST up reply actions

I’d think Alves would be a bad matchup because of the leg kicks. I’ve never seen Penn deal with kicks like those.

Fitch’s style makes him a bad matchup for almost everyone cause he makes you look bad with control.

Kos is probably the easiest of the three but his wrestling and stand up are really good so I’d think he could take Penn down.

by Matthew Roth on Dec 11, 2009 5:29 PM EST up reply actions

Kos' standup isn't all that good

IMO. He’s got big power, but whenever he tries to use it, he leaves himself open like a no-tell motel. Draw your own conclusions from that metaphor.

But the thing he and Fitch do bring is high-level wrestling, which would smother BJ. The thing BJ would have going for him is that they would all be three round fights, so he could blitz a little harder with his energy, not having to worry about rounds four and five.

I think the odds are pretty long on getting to the top of the WW division, even taking the Brock Lesnar fast track.

There is no such thing as innocence, only degrees of guilt.

by misterjonez on Dec 11, 2009 5:47 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with Blueberrymuffin and you that he should fight a contender first but I do believe if he goes up a weight class with his new strength and conditioning coaches the fight with GSP will look very different. Im not saying the end result will be different just how the fight looks.

by mmalogic on Dec 12, 2009 3:20 PM EST up reply actions

I’m pretty sure Diego will pull the upset. BJ doesn’t like to get hit a lot — it makes him tired, and Diego is going to make it rain punches tomorrow night.

by goodbones on Dec 11, 2009 11:58 AM EST reply actions

But you can’t just rain punches on Penn. He’s got such quick powerful hands his counters are lethal. And you know that if Guida could take the barrage Diego gave out, Penn can too.

by Dooda on Dec 11, 2009 12:13 PM EST up reply actions

BJ is 10x the boxer that Diego will ever be.

Keep firing Assholes!

Fedor has accomplished nothing until he fights Kimbo.

by Ubernoober on Dec 11, 2009 12:19 PM EST up reply actions

I think Diego is a little quicker than BJ, and he has better cardio — those are the only advantages he has, and it’ll be enough to get the job done.

Penn certainly hits harder, but don’t discredit Diego because he couldn’t knock out Guida — Guida has never been knocked out or TKO’d in 35 fights, the guy is an ape.

by goodbones on Dec 11, 2009 12:26 PM EST up reply actions

:-(

Diego isn’t quicker than BJ… I am of course concluding this based on BJ’s open workout, and Diego’s iguana training. But no way. Not in a scramble, or with the hands.

He might be quicker running out to the center of the octagon, and quicker to hit the canvas, but that’s about it.

by JeremyShane on Dec 11, 2009 4:31 PM EST up reply actions

That makes no sense

The pound extra is there to compensate for deviations in the scale. It’s not reflective of the fighters at all, it’s the error in the equipment. I was really impressed when I heard that they did they, it’s something scientists are very careful to do, but I didn’t expect it from an athletic commission.

So why would that not carry over to tile fights?

He’s actually already quite popular. If he would have won the Velasquez fight he would be in the conversation for a title fight. Sadly, because of his awful bottom game and takedown defense, people are now talking about how he’ll never be good enough to fight for the title. Work on your wrestling, Cheick!!

I don’t know. I think Kongo’s best chance was to stay calm, keep distance, and pick Mir apart from the outside.

If he’s mad enough to want to rush in to try and knock Frank’s block off, he could end up taken down, and then he’s screwed. Guy can’t stick to his game plan when he’s not livid. I don’t know if this will help him.
