Matt Hamill talks about his controversial DQ win over Jon Jones:

"I give all the credit to Jon Jones. He caught me by surprise with an awesome trip and I dislocated my shoulder when we hit the ground. I knew it was probably over at that point but I will die before I tap so I did the best I could under the circumstances. ...Jon’s young and full of so much talent. Aside from making a mistake he did his job and he did it well.

"He definitely didn’t lose this fight and I definitely didn’t win, but I guess the rules are there for a reason. It is what it is. I went into this fight feeling like my record was actually 9-1 so with this so called win I will now consider my record 9-2…"

wow, he really handled the situation with alot of respect and humility. its not his fault he got the W. how was he supposed to know mazzagati was talking to him, asking him if he could finish? he’s deaf and had his eyes closed because of all the blood.

I'm old school hating Lesnar, I've been hating Lesnar since '08

by MicahW on Dec 10, 2009 10:10 AM EST reply actions

Is he really 100% deaf, or something less?

He answered pretty quick when asked if could continue for a guy that can’t hear and couldn’t see.

I’m not implying that there is anything fake to Hamill hearing impairment, just that there is a difference between deaf and not being able to hear anything.

by Razreshat on Dec 10, 2009 10:40 AM EST up reply actions

He’s had a lifetime to practice reading lips. Also, he didn’t really get what Joe was saying in the post fight recap, he just made a statement as if he lost the fight.

Keep firing Assholes!

I doubt he could read lips with all that blood in his eyes. I think it was more a case of him knowing what the ref would ask him in that situation. The question is, was it his shoulder that made him unable to continue or the cut from the illegal elbows?

I THIRD THAT

He did win that fight and kindof lost this one. Good way to look at it.

lol thank you.

Not that I condone facism or any ism for that matter. Isms are in my opinion, not good. A person shouldn't believe in an ism, he should believe in himself.

I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me". Good point there, after all he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. Wouldn't change the fact I have to bum rides off of people.

Totally. Hey were did that fight take place again?

Giving Shogun his props. I had the fight 48-47 Machida but Shogun put up a monumental performance and I am honored to have seen it in person.

I thought he clearly won that fight

….But he did win that fight… I thought it when I was at it and still do.

Agreed.

I don’t want my above comment to leave the impression that I wasn’t very impressed with this response.

They guy is way classy and I appreciate his candor in this situation.

When you are right you are right.

I think we all believed what he said before he said it…he didn’t win that fight, not even close. I think they both handled it really well. I think a lot, if not most, MMA fighters would feel the same way. Boxers..? Not so much.

love Hamill, hes extremely classy. I cant think of anyone with more heart. Eventhough Im a bigger Jon Jones fan it really sucked seeing Hamill get handled the way he did.

Both sides of this odd finish

handled it about as well as could be expected. Despite the apparent domination by Jones, I wouldn’t be shocked if a rematch is in their near future.

by rzor on Dec 10, 2009 10:34 AM EST reply actions

I think the shoulder injury was a fluke.

Assuming that, I don’t think the GnP domination is a good indicator of how a rematch may or may not go.

by Razreshat on Dec 10, 2009 10:43 AM EST up reply actions

I've been thinking about that

shoulder injury being thrown out there as an “excuse” for the loss here (not that you were making an excuse for Matt). The shoulder was injured because of something Jon Jones did in the course of the fight. Much like Penn getting his ribs injured vs Hughes, the injury is part of the fight and should not be extenuating circumstances for what happened afterward. Sure, a rematch might not go the same way, but in this fight Jon Jones injured Matt’s shoulder with a good trip and then followed up with his GnP. If not for the illegal blows, this would have been a valid win and not a fluke due to injury.

by rzor on Dec 10, 2009 10:51 AM EST up reply actions

Unless I am mistaken, I believe BJ injured himself against Hughes, it really wasn’t anything Hughes did to BJ. However both situations were more along the lines of freak injuries that don’t normally happen, which lends more credibility to a rematch.

That being said, I’d like to see these two fight other people instead of a rematch. Jones is only going to get better in the next 4-6 months while Hamill is going to be busy healing up and won’t have as much time to train and improve.

by Niles on Dec 10, 2009 11:25 AM EST up reply actions

yeah an injury that was caused by another fight was something like Mir/Timmah and Cantwell or stann (get those two mixed up all the time) against razak al hassun (sp?)

by Riley_96 on Dec 10, 2009 1:47 PM EST up reply actions

My point is that...

comments that assume a rematch would go down exactly, or very similarly like this fight don’t take into account that Hamill was less capable of defending himself due to the injury.

I would accept the idea that the injury should be disregarded if Jones had a history of his throws/trips/take downs causing such injuries, but he doesn’t.

So, assuming he would be able to GnP Hamill again like this is not a very practical assessment.

I think he would win again, but I don’t think you would see that dominant GnP again unless Hamill is similarly hindered.

by Razreshat on Dec 10, 2009 1:53 PM EST up reply actions

I have always been a fan of Matt Hamill, and him saying this has made me an even bigger fan of his. I would probably give Hamill someone like Schafer or K-Sos next.

I think after Randy beats Coleman, we should have a Coleman vs. Hamill fight, winner keeps the Hammer nickname.

9-1, LOL

I love how he doesn’t count the Bisping fight as a loss. Pretty classy stuff right there.

That was pretty classy. But I will say it again, if Jones just finished that fight with an armbar there’d be nothing to make a statement about.

doh…guess I should have read the other comments before posting. I will say this - That Matt Hammill seems to be a fairly classy guy; I would maybe go as fas as calling him a class act. What do you guys think?

by RickRude on Dec 10, 2009 3:21 PM EST reply actions

Class

I think this is a really great statement. He empathizes with how Jones must feel and accepts that Mazzagatti is the worst ref in MMA.

On another note, Hamill has the real potential to be a superstar in the UFC. He has class, he has a great story to tell and get behind, and he has a great fighter’s spirit. I remember watching the fight and yelling “Tap tap tap.” Just like Rocky or something. It was like one of those great movies where the heroin is the enemy at first and then people start to cheer for the underdog.

Also, he did beat Bisping.

Classy C. McClassalot

“A class act in every sense of the phrase, Matt "The Hammer" Hamill has recently taken to his official blog to give Jon Jones all of the credit in the world for his thorough beating of the TUF veteran during UFC 106. " – 5 oz.of pain.

I think its classy that he tapped when he got tossed on his shoulder, and now he turns around and says he will die before he taps. He is class personified.

by RickRude on Dec 11, 2009 8:49 AM EST reply actions

At no point did he do anything that even resembled a tap, what are you talking about?
