UFC 107 Preview: Bloody Elbow Judo Chop: The Lethal Rear-Naked Choke Set Ups of B.J. Penn
In his classic MMA training manual B.J. Penn's Mixed Martial Arts: The Book of Knowledge, "The Prodigy" writes: "The rear-naked choke is the best move ever invented. Once you've got it locked in, you're pretty much guaranteed the victory. However with most fighters spending lots of time polishing their submission defense, it can sometimes be a difficult submission to lock in."
B.J. has applied his formidable jiu jitsu mind to several ways to foil the submission defense of even the most skilled and experienced fighters.
Diego Sanchez has to be planning on beating up Penn on the feet and then getting and keeping top position on the ground. Because if B.J. Penn gets on Diego's back, we're likely in for a very short night and if B.J. wins by submission, it's very likely to be by way of "the best move ever invented" -- the Rear-Naked Choke. Five out of B.J.'s six professional submission wins have come by way of the rear-naked choke.
Let's look at a couple of examples of the bag of tricks that B.J. uses to set up his dreaded rear-naked choke in the full entry, with animated gifs.
In the gif on the right we see Penn working from back control on Jens Pulver at The Ultimate Fighter 5 Finale. He's threatening to wrap his left arm around Pulver's neck and get the choke finish. Penn is using his right arm to push Pulver's right arm down by his waist. This forces Pulver to using his own left arm to defend himself.
Once Pulver lifts his left arm, Penn pulls it further back and then grabs Pulvers fingers and pulls the arm down. At the same time Pulver is fighting to raise his right arm and he thinks he's succeeding. That's when B.J. springs the trap and wraps his left leg around Pulver's left arm, pinning it helplessly to his side.
On the left we see the completion of the play. Once he's got Pulver's arm trapped, it's like a 2 on 1 play in basketball. Pulver gamely tries to defend his throat, but with Penn having two arms with which to attack, it's a deeply uneven contest.
In fact, B.J. Penn on your back is a lot like having a sort of combination giant spider-octopus on your back seeking to strangle you. Note how he hooks his right arm under Pulver's right armpit which totally renders Pulver's throat defenseless as Penn threads his left arm under the chin and he's got the choke. Then he unhooks his right arm from under Pulver's right and locks in the figure four and finishes the choke.

Here on the right we see the culmination of B.J.'s most recent title defense against Kenny Florian at UFC 101. Florian has some advantages over Pulver. He's got longer arms and a great deal more jiu jitsu expertise. Initially he's doing quite a bit better than Pulver as well. Penn's not able to force either of Florian's arms down to his side so there's no opening to use his leg to trap an arm.
In fact, Florian has his own version of the 2-on-1 going against Penn's left arm. But look at B.J.'s right heel. He starts driving it into Florian's short rib and liver in a nasty little series of three heel kicks. Annoyed by the blows, Florian seemingly can't resist dropping his right forearm down to block the kicks and protect his liver. Then he raises his arm again to throw an ineffectual elbow back toward's Penn's face. Penn throws one more heel kick and then a second. That's when Florian makes the fatal mistake of dropping his right wrist down to protect himself. Like lightening, Penn immediately cinches his left arm around Florian's throat and sinks in the choke.
If Diego "The Nightmare" Sanchez has been watching too much of Penn's old fight footage, I wouldn't be surprised if he's the one having the nightmares.

I never paid attention to those liver shots on Kenny
the speed with which BJ cinches the choke after Kenny drops his arm for just a second, is mind-blowing.
I was hoping you'd do a Judo Chop on this...
Loved those heel kicks.
look carefully and you’ll see penn howling with delight WELL before florian taps… it’s as if as soon as florian drops his right arm (like kid nate analyzed), penn already knows he won and starts celebrating.
awesome.

I didn't notice that...
I’ve never thought thought Penn was a scary figure. Fedor scares me because he is possibly soulless. Diego scares me because it’s impossible to figure out where that guy’s head is at. Wanderlei scares me because he takes so much pleasure in destroying people. Now, that look of childlike glee on Penn’s face as he’s choking Florian has added him to my list of terrifying individuals.

Penn made Joe Stevenson bleed like a stuck pig and then licked the blood off of his gloves.
Penn made Sean Sherk bleed and then slapped him…. and licked the blood off of his own hand.
My point is Penn is either a scary crazy mofo when he’s in that cage, or he’s a vampire.
… Probably a vampire.

A spider
is an apropos metaphor regarding the Kenny fight. He baited Ken-Flo into a vulnerable position, and then springs the choke like a Tarantula pouncing on its prey. I think I’ve watched that fight 5 or 6 times now and when you know what’s coming it’s all the more satisfying.
does it make us sick and demented that we enjoy watching this repeatedly so much? i don’t think so, but… sigh… good luck trying to explain it to anyone else.

Yeah, the "Rear" Naked Choking
video collection will also likely remove a few positions from your available arsenal, also.
I’m renaming my collection as I type ;)

Cool judo chop.
I wondering if Sanchez’ grappling will come into oplay in this fight. Who will appear to be the physically bigger fighter.

Diego should look bigger
And he’s got a strong wrestling game and a good jiu jitsu game. I wouldn’t be astonished if he manages to wind up in BJ’s guard at a few points in the fight.
But BJ’s jiu jitsu is just next level. Fighting on the ground is not what Diego wants to do here.

Lets not forget that Diego held up better than some of the top BJJ practitioners in the world when he faced Marcelo Garcia. Garcia is considered by some the best grappler in the world.
oh I didn't know that
got more details on the match?
was it gi or no-gi?

No-Gi if I recall correctly.

Comes up quick on youtube with their names searched.
Diego uses his brute wrestling power to counter Garcia’s honed technique. Pretty sloppy match all around but that 3 years ago and Diego’s been training with the Ribeiro brothers.
BJ is definitely “the prodigy” in that area, but that area of Diego’s game and progression should be noted.
BJ won’t be submitting Diego from his back. BJ doesn’t want to concede TDs, which is why he fights to stay off his back so much.
he doesn't fight off his back..
bc he knows judges give points to the guy on top regardless of the action, the majority of the time.
I'm like PacMan fightin you silly kids... throw ya Hatton the ring, and get knocked outlike Ricky did.
lol.
Those heel kicks look so brutal
I almost think that BJ would have been fine with going ape shit on Florian’s liver for the remainder of the round, but yeah, as soon as Kenny’s focus wasn’t completely on protecting his throat, BJ pounced.
Nasty.
And he has great boxing, fast hands, crazy flexibility, awesome take-down defense, oh yeah, a granite chin so your one good punch chance is gone. Good luck Diego.
"Stop smiling you are about to be punched in the face !"
Yeah when I think about this one at first I think “Diego has a great chance” then when I actually imagine what it would take for him to win, I can’t come up with anything except maybe a decision. But if the match goes 5 rounds, I think that at some point the chances are that BJ is going to find a submission. If not that there’s also a good chance that he’s going to get a knockout.
If nothing else, could you imagine a 5 round fight where BJ doesn’t get him to the ground and on his back at some point? And when that happens, the only scenario I see Diego escaping is one where there’s not much time left in the round.
My two cents:
The first thing everyone has to know about the RNC or for that matter essentially any chokes from the back (collar, bow and arrow, etc etc) is that there’s one objective to have if you’re the guy who’s getting attacked and that objective is:
Stop the attacking arm. There’s only one arm you need to worry about, the reason some guys are better at getting RNCs than others (see: Marcelo Garcia (RNC master)) is that they’re amazing at switching which arm they are attacking with and can shut down their opponents defense by essentially faking them out or removing the defensive barriers.
The movement from Penn while he’s on peoples backs is pretty much all smoke and mirrors, he draws their attention in many different directions at the same time and tries to cloud the main issue at hand. The kicks to the body, the grip/hand play, the position shifts and control changes etc etc are all just to get the opponent to stop being able to concentrate on determining which hand to defend against at the time of attack; all of the opponents know the choke is his objective but because of Penn drawing their attention to other areas at the same time the opponent thinks they see an opening or believes they have the right arm under control when they so obviously don’t (thus they get trapped and then tapped, or straight tapped).
Penn’s also pretty devious, in the Pulver choke he’s both setting up an armbar and a choke at the same time. That underhook from the back which shuts down Pulvers free arm is the start to achieving a little slipping arm bar from the back, Pulver bridges up to try and rotate into Penn’s guard but because he forgets the choke for a second he misses the fact that Penn had moved his forearm underneath Pulvers chin, the forearm pops straight up, the underhook dissapears and then bam… fade to black.
Now on Kenny there’s a little tiny thing that’s really interesting. Kenny is try to trap B.J.s leg and turn into a half guard or he’ll try to turtle up, Penn dangles that bottom leg inside as a bait for Kenny and then because of his ridiculous dexterity he actually uses his foot to stop Kenny from hipping over into Penn’s half guard or from turtling up. Once the kicks on the open leg free up the route to the choke Penn goes ahead and hits the full mata leo style RNC (which is what he almost always does, many MMA fighters use the 10 fingers or gable grip style choke from the back).
The crazy thing to me is how good Penn is with back control when he has his own back flat on the mat with the opponents weight down on him, he’s just as fluid there as he is on the side (small tip: executing the choke with you on your side and opponent on their side is more effective than having their weight on you because you can dig your hooks in and arch your back while breathing in (makes the choke much more effective) with their weight on you it’s harder to do that, so look for Penn to always try to finish the choke while both he and the opponent lay on their side (which is pretty much how they all end, but thought I’d add that in.)
The RNC and back control in general are ingrained in lighter weight jiu jitsu practitioners faster than the heavier weight classes because of the training dynamic, it’s much harder for me (6’4, 206ibs) to fight a smaller opponent when he is on my back because I can’t use my size, strength, length, or leverage to defend myself as easily as I could if he was in my guard, half guard, etc etc; by maintaining control on the back he’s allowed to execute offense while being safe and not having to defend against the larger opponent strength and technique at the same time. So smaller, quicker guys tend to gravitate towards back control because it gives them the best chances at executing an offensive gameplan. Now in mma and non-absolute grappling matches they’ll tend to broaden out their gameplan but because they’ve had to draw up and make routes to back control because of their training “in house” they’ll still be looking for it a lot and be more comfortable executing from that dominant position.
If I can think of anything else to add later, I will, other than that I kinda just brain drained a little jiu jitsu out of my head haha hope some of this post made sense?

As a quick side story:
Last week the school I train at had a guest in town, a guy by the name of Johnny Ramirez (Medeiros black belt, runs “New Breed Jiu Jitsu” in Santa Fe Springs CA) who’s a small dude but a mega bad ass; I had the chance to roll with him a few times (he went light on me thank god) but each time I rolled with him was a perfect example of what I said in that post up there, he’d get back control on me and then just super wreck me immediately (Johnny has a SICK bow and arrow choke), if he didn’t get on my back I had the ability to move and maybe go a bit offensive (again, he was going light, if he wanted to just wreck me i wouldn’t have gotten the chances to move that i did get).
Thought that was interesting though as it sort of applies to what I posted.

This is the best description of Penn’s amazing ground work. I really only see this fight ending one way: Penn choking the shit out of Sanchez.
I love me some Sexyama!
“Because if B.J. Penn gets on his back…” not sure if you care, but this should probably be “because if BJ Penn gets him on his back…” otherwise it reads like BJ Penn getting on his own back. FWIW.
Actually...
if I’m not overstepping, it should probably read more like “…Penn gets on Diego’s back.” if we’re trying to clear up what’s going on. Your example sounds more like Penn is attempting top control/some sort of mount.

Great Article
Kid Nate, great article. Best I have read in a long time. I love Bloody Elbow, so that is saying a lot.
Above this Fire, great sub-article? Great insight as well. For a guy who is not a Jiu Jitzu black belt I am always fascinated by the intricacies of the art. So many people get so pumped for the violent part but I find this is why I keep coming back. There is so much going on that is so subtle that you almost have to watch a fight like this 100 times to see it all in slow motion.
In the fight itself, I think people are underestimating Sanchez. Other than GSP, I think he will be BJ’s greatest challenge to date. The fight against Guida didn’t require much skill, but one thing is for certain, no one will question Sanchez’ heart. He has no shortage of energy and BJ does. BJ’s RNC is only good for so long … and then he is just plain tired. If Sanchez can get there, he can impose his will. I am so excited for this fight. I can not wait.
if you have the time or it interests you
I would love to see the Jon Jones leg reap on Matt hammil. I think it was Osoto Gari. A Judo chop for the Judo chop.
it definitely interests me
i’ll probably save it for before his next fight and include some of his other moves. beautiful as it was it didn’t seem to have enough meat to be a full judo chop.

I was definitely considering that one
but it didn’t seem like quite enough for a chop all by itself. Maybe will look for some other moves to put with it.
