Pacquiao-vs-mayweather

Floyd Mayweather, Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao nearly finalized:

"The much-anticipated bout between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao is all but set for March 13th, a source told Yahoo! Sports."

"Mayweather has agreed to terms and promoter Bob Arum is making a trip to Manila, Philippines, to finalize a deal with Pacquiao, the source said."

... "A survey team from Top Rank will inspect Dallas Cowboys Stadium as a possible venue. The MGM Grand Garden Arena and the New Orleans Superdome are also in the running to host the mega-fight, the source said."

Glad it is not scheduled at May 1 because I would have chosen this over Machida vs Shogun II. I can’t wait for this, and I can’t wait to see Pacquiao the undisputed pound-for-pound number one boxer in the world.

However, it is also the apocalypse of boxing as it the only relevant fight left fans want to see.

I doubt Mayweather would rematch if he won. Gotta protect that 0…

If Pacquiao wins, and doesn’t destroy Mayweather like he did Cotto (there’s slim chance of this happening, but still), there might be a rematch, and eventually a rubber match. I’d love to see it happen.

Ricky Hatton came closer to beating Manny Pacquiao than Marquez did to beating Floyd.

by The Lethal Haze on Dec 2, 2009 8:08 AM EST up reply actions

Berto and Clottey look good if either guy wants to fight a challenging fight. The welterweight division is packed with talent. Paul Williams could probably be persuaded to come down in weight for such a big fight too, although he hasn’t fought at welterweight for nearly a year and a half.

But there isn’t much money in a fight if the opponent isn’t Mosley or Cotto. And while Cotto took the ass beating of his career vs Pacquiao, I’m thinking Mayweather actually sees Cotto’s weakness as a good thing. I wouldn’t be surprised if Mayweather and Cotto fought in the next year. Also Cotto and Hatton may fight as well. There are alot of interesting things that can happen at welterweight in boxing.

According to The Economist, Pacquiao is considering running for Congress in the Philippines. He ran in 2007 to represent his home district, but lost. His party is called “the People’s Champ Movement” but they have no platform. I’m sure with a win over Mayweahter, his country would go into such a frenzy that there would be no way he could lose.

by Mike_S. on Dec 1, 2009 10:43 PM EST reply actions

Read the links people!
Promoters had targeted May 1 for the fight almost from the moment that Pacquiao stopped Cotto. But Pacquiao filed Tuesday to run for Congress in the Philippines and the election will be held on May 10.

Given that, the bout with Mayweather had to be moved up to March 13 or pushed back until September.

by ufc4 on Dec 1, 2009 11:00 PM EST up reply actions

Didn't read the link huh?
Though there were reports that Arum was considering matching Pacquiao with new WBO super welterweight champion Yuri Foreman on March 13 in Dallas, that was a diversionary move and was never serious, the source said.

David Haye beat Nicolai Valuev to win a heavyweight belt and is looking to fight one of the Klit bros and eventually unify the Heavyweight belt (good luck with that).

Tomasz Adamek is a brawler with a phenomenal chin that just moved up to heavyweight, relinquishing his cruiserweight belt. His fights nearly come with a money back garauntee that they will be exciting.

by pandaboy99 on Dec 2, 2009 12:15 AM EST reply actions

I desparately want to pick Pacquiao in this fight.

However, I just can’t see Manny overcoming the size, technique, and, more importantly, the speed of Mayweather. Sure, Manny is lightning quick, but Floyd is, in my eyes, equally as fast. With the speed being equal, I’ll have to go with the size and technique advantage.

March 13th can’t get here fast enough.

I specializes in grammar fail.

by a tommy point on Dec 2, 2009 12:16 AM EST reply actions

I’m confused- first you said the most important thing is Mayweather’s speed, then you said they are equally as fast, and so you are going with the size and technique of Floyd.

by ufc4 on Dec 2, 2009 12:24 AM EST up reply actions

Right, because many will be going into this fight thinking that Manny will have the speed advantage simply because he’s the naturally smaller guy. Yes, that was true against DLH and Cotto, but not this time around. So, if the speed argument is moot, I’m going with whoever has more distinct advantages in other areas.

That is why I say Mayweather’s speed is most important factor. It takes away the one advantage Manny would otherwise have against larger boxers.

I specializes in grammar fail.

by a tommy point on Dec 2, 2009 12:35 AM EST up reply actions

His crabshell defense will be the most important factor in my opinion. It will be interesting if Pacman can crack it.

This is why I would love to see boxers use MMA gloves – to prevent them from hiding. I imagine weaving & ducking is just as easy whether fighting large or small gloves, but they couldn’t just stand there barricaded behind their hands – punches would easily slip through.

Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try Again. Fail again. Fail better. -Samuel Beckett

by Scott C. Broussard on Dec 2, 2009 12:51 AM EST up reply actions

I’m in the same boat. This fight is going to be huge, there’s no doubt in anybody’s mind, but I think the one thing MMA will always have over boxing is it’s a purer form of combat sport. It better answers the question of who would win in a fight. It’s the sport of fighting, with some rules and regulations to keep things safe an legal. As awesome as these guys are at boxing, in a real fight, they would be missing entire elements of the fight game. That being said, looking forward to this.

by Meeaaat on Dec 2, 2009 7:30 AM EST up reply actions

Not even regarding styles, leave the rules alone – just switch the gloves and watch those who try to hide scramble for a new strategy since they can’t bunker down anymore.

What you are doing is giving one punch knockout guys a massive( I think that is an understatement) advantage. Your line of thinking would have made Earnie Shavers and George Foreman worthy of being the greatest of all time instead of Ali.

Though, to be fair, Manny is also more skilled than most everyone he faces.

Still, I’d put the skill advantage in the Mayweather column.

Pulling for Pac but i wouldnt put a dime on it. Floyd is undefeated for a reason.

by pitbull187 on Dec 2, 2009 12:32 AM EST reply actions

Floyd is undefeated mainly because he doesn’t take many risks, both inside the ring and in picking his opponents. If you take a look at the welterweight rankings, PBF has fought exactly 0 of them. The legitimate big names on his resume come from Lightweight, and his last three opponents had to come up or down in weightclass just to fight him.

I’ll sleep well if I get to see Floyd crawling around on the canvas looking for his mouthpiece. Should be interesting. Lesner vs Mir with strong undercard at UFC 100 did 1.7 million PPV which is more then any Mayweather or Pacquiao fight.

I can imagine Lesner vs Fedor with a strong undercard which boxing never has (maybe another title match) combined with insane UFC marketing (you got US vs Russia, what more would you want) would break 2 million mark. I can’t see Mayweather vs Pacquiao doing that.
