Questions regarding Fedor/Rogers numbers in Russia.
M-1/Strikeforce has issued a press release stating:
In total, over 25 million MMA fans all around the world were treated to a vintage performance from the world’s greatest MMA fighter, Fedor Emelianenko. The main event of Fedor vs Rogers reached an impressive 5.46 million viewers in the United States on the CBS Network. The fight was also broadcast in Fedor’s native Russia by “Channel 1,” Russia’s largest television network, and reached 16 million viewers in Fedor’s home country. In addition, “Fedor vs. Rogers” was broadcast to millions of viewers in Korea on SBS, one of the 3 major national South Korean networks, as well as television networks in China, Latin America, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Ukraine, Finland, Africa, Turkey, Israel, Indonesia, Bulgaria, Romania, and Malta. Live internet streams of the “Fedor vs. Rogers” bout generated ground-breaking viewer numbers in Japan and all over the world and these numbers continue to grow through Video on Demand.
That is pretty impressive, but I am having trouble with the Russian number. According to TNS, a media company in Russia, Fedor/Rogers did a share of 12 and a rating of 3.8. I used this translation.
One rating point equals one percent of television households and one share point equals one percent of the televisions in use at the time. Since I can't find any data as to how many households have televisions, I decided to use the most liberal date I could and used the population for Russia: 141 million. Using that, the number would be 5.386 million. That is ten million less than the press release.
Is there anyone here that can provide more insight on these numbers. I just don't see anyway that it comes out to what is being claimed.
I don't want this to be a UFC vs. M-1 argument, I am simply looking for some info.

Sounds like some BS
unless they actually meant “Fedor’s home continent (Asia)”, which would make those #’s plausible.
Still though, 5 1/2 million people aint half bad, maybe Fedor will start gaining some real celebrity status (perhaps to his chagrin)

I can provide a bit insight without having too much inside information. Russia, like many countries outside the US and UK don’t have very many television stations. Think the US circa 1970, that’s how limited television programming is.
The fact that Fedor was on Russian TV will garner him huge exposure in his own country. Competition exists between 5 channels, not 500 channels like here so it’s easy to understand the huge number of viewers. This is a quick paraphrase, not actual statistic.
I think there was UFC story last year about broadcasting in Mexico and getting 25-35 million eye balls. Seems extremely impressive at first til you realize Mexico has a handful of television channels and the national nightly news garners an average of 100-125 million viewers per night. The big win is just getting the programming on one of those very limited channels, ratings aren’t nearly as important.
Fedor Fought at 6am Moscow time
So 5/141 million people or 3% of the entire population was not only up at 6am, but watching Fedor fight. And that’s using some EXTREMELY conservative numbers…
This obsession with the Rogers/Fedor numbers is interesting when you consider the looming LIKELIHOOD that it will double for his next fight on CBS…

How is that a looming likelihood?
that’s why it makes sense for some people to try and question some of the numbers when they seem off, people keep making ridiculous statements like this.
The numbers are what they are.
this fight didn’t air live on channel 1 in Russia. It was tape-delayed at midday on Sunday.
Actually the Fedor fight didn’t do much buzz in Russia that weekend. All the mainstream media were interested in Nikolai Valuev losing his title against Haye and the controversial decision.

Valuev kept his title through that awful decision against Holyfield, so that was only fair.
I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.
Wait...
what controversial decision? Against Haye? That fight wasn’t close in anyone’s eyes that I’ve heard

Obsession?
M-1 issued a press release stating that over 10% of the Russian population watched the fight. A little research shows that it appears to be incorrect.
As far as Fedor’s next CBS fight doing 10 million, that is not going to happen. It may well do better and be a big success, but even Lesnar would be unlikely to break 10 million.
