Frank Mir Doesn't Care About the Title, He Just Wants to End Brock Lesnar's Career

1y77dd_medium

"To end Brock Lesnar’s career." he replied instantly. "Really, it’s what I think about all the time. Brock Lesnar exploited a huge weakness in my game and no matter who I crush after this, I have to crush him to show I’ve improved that weakness."

"It’s nothing about how he talked to me in my last fight, I could care less about it.  If I took it that personal there are other ways to handle situation like that outside of a cage, but honestly I just want to fix what was exploited. If you’re a true martial artist you don’t do it for money or titles, just to be the best human being possible, and if someone exploits a weakness, who better to see if you’ve fixed it than the guy who exploited it."

"Getting the title back, it’s a nice novel idea, but even being the heavyweight champ or the interim champ, I got to be honest, I didn’t really feel that different walking around… Some people think that with the belt, that you made it.  Nah, you didn’t make shit.  You won a fight, just the fight happened to have more ribbon and bells and whistles on it. Bottom line, [its about] testing yourself!"

--Former UFC Heavyweight Champion, Frank Mir when asked by Fighters Only about what he wanted to accomplish before retiring.

A future rubber match between the two fighters is certainly possible, but in the mean time, Mir should be thinking more about his UFC 107 opponent, Cheick Kongo.

Lesnar will Exploit that weakness over and over again..

by asmiley420 on Nov 9, 2009 6:14 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

weakness

Is he referring to the fact that Lesnar is bigger, stronger, more athletic, and better fighter as his weakness?? I would say that failing to stop those bear paws from making contact with his face is not necessarily a weakness, but a failure to cover up, stop drop and roll, run and hide, get out the way, etc… Be afraid, be very afraid

My dad told me when I was 8 years old, "Never hit a man while he is down... it so much easier to kick him!!!!"

Well you know what Lesnar was also bigger , stronger and more athletic than Couture yet Couture handled Lesnar much more successfully than Mir. Not EVERYTHING relates to size alone , skills are very important. I don’t think Lesnar could do what he did to Mir to Fedor , despite his huge size advantage (I think Lesnar could win , but it’s definitely gonna be a fight. he might even break some sweat).

by JoelMan on Nov 10, 2009 2:38 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

BTW in Mir’s case tho I really think it’s hopeless against Lesnar , I just don’t agree that size+strength advantage equals immediate loss ALWAYS . In Mir’s case it does though , Mir isn’t that tough imo.
The interesting fight for Mir would’ve been against Nogueira(a rematch) , I’m still hoping they do it.

by JoelMan on Nov 10, 2009 2:41 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly, unless Brock makes a mistake he wont win.

In the second fight, I think Mir was waiting for Brock to make a mistake and trying to capitalize on that instead of being smart. He took too many punches mistake never came and he got his face smashed.

Yeah, OK Frank

Lesnar was able to neutralize him with his size and strength, what would change next time around? You can’t get a guy in a submission if he is laying flat on you, pressing you against the cage and nailing you in the face with his 5x gloves.

He could actually do a number of things

1) Improve his wrestling
2) Bulk up, add more lean mass so that he’s not at such a size/ strength disadvantage
3) Keep improving his striking, and use more low- risk, effective strikes like punching combos and leg kicks (which I believe Lesnar is succeptible to), instead of throwing flying knees from 1 leg (IE- not giving up the takedown).
etc.

Frank had his moments in that fight, but first and foremost, he needs to make Lesnar work for his takedowns, mark him up standing, and when/ if he gets taken down he needs to not let Brock get into smothering mode, not let him catch his wrists, and work for submissions/ sweeps. Because I sincerely believe that if Frank could get a good sprawl, or sweep Brock, that he could slap on a choke/ armlock. That’s probably his best chance.

Meh

if you set a leg kick up right, it’s very hard to get taken down. Ask Josh Koscheck if the leg kicks from Alves impeded his takedowns…

Srsly tho, Brock’s reflexes aren’t so quick that he can just drop down the second his opponent decides to throw a kick, you just have to be smart and mix the kicks in with punches, and as a counter to when Brock throws a haymaker and gets off balance.

Alves has great takedown D though, and Mir doesn’t.. You have a good point, but i don’t think using Alves is the right analogy.

by Anton Tabuena on Nov 9, 2009 10:29 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

That's what i'm saying though

by improving his kickboxing and wrestling, Mir could use leg kicks to slow Brock’s shots, and keep him at bay.

It was mainly a response to this in particular:

what would change next time around?

The problem is that Mir hasn’t got striking technique to throw hard and fast combinations. He don’t have the timing, footwork, sense of distance. He never did it before and I doubt that he will be successful when he will execute it for the first time.

Only moment he had was the elbow and knee that led to a takedown that eventually finished the fight for him.

by Dav11 on Nov 10, 2009 10:44 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

You might be reading too much into it if you think he’s saying he wants to eliminate Lesnar’s physical ability to participate in the sport by maiming him. He may just mean that he wants to to embarrass Lesnar so thoroughly that Brock leaves the sport.

Regardless, I don’t see it happening in this lifetime.

But most people attribute Frank’s win to the stand-up & restart, and even if you accept the stand-up as legit, Frank was still getting beat-down for 90% of the fight. Lesnar completely ravaged Mir in the rematch, so while it is quantitatively 1-1, the performances are worlds apart qualitatively.

You're missing the point....

While I agree that Lesnar fans (which I am one of) like to throw around the 1st fight and how it was going a bit too much….there is something to be learned from it. Frank Mir was a very dangerous, seasoned and game fighter…..fighting a brand new rookie in what was essentially his first fight. Frank had been training for quite a long time (I assume, don’t have facts to back that up), and Lesnar had only been training for a couple years. Up until the submission, it did appear that the seasoned vet was getting beat pretty badly by a noob.

I think the reason that people bring it up all the time is because of the quesionable stand up/restart and point deduction. Some people claim that Maz was just following the rules, and you know what? He was. But the fact of the matter remains that was a very unusual thing to do, and I have seen many fights after that one where Maz gave repeated warnings to fighters about illegal strikes without taking a point away. If he was consistent with a certain type of call it would be fine, but he’s all over the map.

The “W” is all that matters, Machida won against Shogun, Fedor lost via a cut and most likely lost the Ricardo Arona fight, and Frank Mir won the first Lesnar match up.

You’re never going to be able to stop people from defending those they like, or keep people from speculating about the likes of “Alisteroid Ubereem” as some people like to call him. It’s human nature, and Mir’s human nature is to say shit like “I’m going to rip his face off”, “I’m going to end his career”, “There are other ways to take care of things outside of the ring”, etc etc etc. So fight 3 will be Frank “hyping” the fight by saying stuff like this, then he’ll lose again and Lesnar will tell him to fuck himself because he doesn’t like Mir or his attitude, and he’ll be the evil bad guy again.

by soadtrails on Nov 11, 2009 9:35 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Not to get off topic

But under the rules of the RINGs or whatever it was called Fedor beat Arona. Its not based on position but instead sub attempts.

I am a big Brock fan....

but he lost that fight with Mir. Lost it. Mir won. There wasn’t any luck involved.

Brock said on the UFC 100 countdown show that he gave Mir the position he needed to lock in the submission. Brock knew he messed up and Mir took advantage of it. And Brock made sure that didn’t happen the second time. Mir deserves props for winning the first one as much as Brock does for winning the second one. That first Mir fight made Brock a MUCH better MMA fighter.

I dont see Brock/Mir III going much differently to their second meeting. Brock said after their first fight that he had improved, wouldn’t make the same mistakes again and he backed up his words.
Mir’s only problem is that he wouldnt be able to follow suit. There’s always room for improvement, nobody is ever perfect. Truth is there’s just not alot you can do about a guy that size smothering you whilst pounding your face with his “lunchbox hands”

Saying that you want to end a dude’s career is over-the-top but the way people throw around words in the fight game, I find it far from unseemly. Mir’s just trying to show confidence and posture for a lucrative rematch. He did do some positive things in the second match while standing before getting out-wrestled and mauled on the ground.

A couple of extra pounds aren’t going to be enough to offset a lifetime of wrestling training. Randy Couture was pretty damn effective stopping Brock’s takedown & control game, and Randy is 30 pounds lighter than Frank. Why was Randy so successful? Because he has the wrestling skills to counter a big man who is trying to take him down.

Getting bigger won’t solve anything. Frank needs to increase his wrestling skills if he wants to have any chance of stuffing Brock’s takedowns.

Perfectly stated......

Now that Brock has come along. We hear this business “he is too big and strong”, “you need a bigger guy” or “you need to get bigger”. How many times throughout history has this statement been proven false?. Intelligence and skill will overcome size the majority of the time. Anderson Silva has expressed interest in fighting Lesnar, I know many people think he is crazy and the MMA hardcores think he would get taken down and pounded. Really?, you think Anderson would not use his superior footwork, timing, angles and movement and intelligence to not allow a takedown?. I would say he makes Lesnar look like a ball of lumps.

One way to improve on his performance is to not get stuck in halfguard like he was, put Brock in his guard and work his subs from the back and test Lesnar’s sub game with a variety of subs of his back. That would be one way that Mir can try to change things up in a rematch, Mir has to prepare to work from his back and catch an arm or Brock’s neck I truly believe he was thrown off by Lesnar’s game plan but that won’t happen in a third fight.

Personally I love how focused and serious Mir sounds, hopefully this will be a sign that he’s getting focused and ready for Kongo and making another run at the belt. Because regardless of how many excuses and bs rationalization’s people throw out for Mir winning the fact is he tapped Brock in the first and with a win or 2 a third fight with Lesnar is very doable.
