Marquardt walks away with this one, fairly easily in my opinion.

Thats a heap of a leap

I will bet the odds will not agree with you after the outcome of Okami/Sonnen

by SimplePsych on Nov 9, 2009 6:24 PM EST up reply actions

I’ll take Nate up to -250.

Giving Shogun his props. I had the fight 48-47 Machida but Shogun put up a monumental performance and I am honored to have seen it in person.

by Day Man on Nov 9, 2009 7:02 PM EST up reply actions

I think Marquardt (thanks to Jesus, of course). Chael will just LNP it.

by grein on Nov 9, 2009 4:42 PM EST reply actions

Marquardt will win this*

by grein on Nov 9, 2009 4:43 PM EST up reply actions

Good enough fight considering they put it together just to keep Nate busy. Tough fight for Sonnen.

by lowellthehammer on Nov 9, 2009 4:45 PM EST reply actions

It look’s like the UFC is preparing to move forward without Henderson on the roster.

by Nick Thomas on Nov 9, 2009 4:46 PM EST reply actions

yep. that's what i got from the announcement too..

Chael has got momentum with Miller and Okami, and if somehow magically pulls this off, he’d be the next guy in line.. If he loses, then Marquardt still gets his shot after Belfort.. Either way, the UFC gets a very deserving challenger..

no more Leites and Cote’s instant undeserving MW title shots please. thanks..

by Anton Tabuena on Nov 9, 2009 5:18 PM EST up reply actions

Chael is just a loyal employee of the UFC. He’ll get a shot at the title when his name looks good on a poster and thats about it.

by judonerd on Nov 10, 2009 12:13 AM EST up reply actions

nighty night chael

by woooburn on Nov 9, 2009 4:47 PM EST reply actions

If Marquardt was potentially

one win away from a title shot, does this mean Chael is also just one win away?

by rzor on Nov 9, 2009 4:52 PM EST reply actions

My thoughts exactly.

If Nate somehow gets put down in this fight, HUGE if but if it happens, to his title shot if he loses to chael?

by Takun on Nov 9, 2009 4:55 PM EST up reply actions

With Silva’s surgery and Belfort being thrust ahead of him, Marquardt was always going to have a fight in between. This gives him the double-dip of a top10 opponent coming off a huge win over Okami and yet someone he should be able to beat convincingly.

by Stanlee on Nov 9, 2009 5:00 PM EST up reply actions

The winner should get the next shot. (After Belfort)

yes, that includes Chael.. wins over Miller, Okami, and Marquardt deserves a title shot IMO..

by Anton Tabuena on Nov 9, 2009 5:20 PM EST up reply actions

No chance.

Think in terms of Kampmann/Daley. Kampmann could’ve gotten a shot if he had won, but Daley wasn’t anywhere near a shot. Same goes for Chael.

by lowellthehammer on Nov 9, 2009 4:57 PM EST up reply actions

That makes sense

with the caveat that Daley was a replacement.

by rzor on Nov 9, 2009 5:01 PM EST up reply actions

Well...

Silva will probably declare him about four wins away from a title shot…

I’m starting to come around on Sonnen, even though I don’t like his personality, but he can’t win this fight. Should be a fun one until he gets KO’d, though.

Is this a sensible fight?

Sonnen is good, but has a recent loss to Maia. Marquardt just beat Maia. Maia is still a top contender.

Sonnen could LNP Marquardt (conceivably) for a win. Where would that put the UFC for the next MW contender?

by Hardcharger on Nov 9, 2009 5:02 PM EST reply actions

Why not sonnen? He lost to Maia, but Main lost to Anderson.

Going by BE’s rankings, this is the best MW fight they can make if Hendo is gone (which he is at the moment) and if they think Belfort/Silva is the next title fight.

by Phildo on Nov 10, 2009 12:26 AM EST up reply actions

Sonnen is a really good fighter. I don’t think it is out of the realm of possibility that he is able to take Nate down and go to work. He also has some pretty darn good boxing. He and Okami had th ebest fight at UFC 104 (at leat live) and he is a live underdog here for sure. Crazy fight if the UFC cares about Marquardt at all.

Marquardt-Hendo

As much as Dana says that Henderson is gone to SF they whole-heartedly expect him to come back to the UFC.

by ufc4 on Nov 9, 2009 7:00 PM EST up reply actions

Hendo wants big $$$. That would only come with a UFC title shot.

What's Franklin doing?

Franklin vs. Marquardt is more interesting and would be a better headline.

by steveoc24 on Nov 9, 2009 5:05 PM EST reply actions

Franklin only fights

at Franklinweight (195) now.

by rzor on Nov 9, 2009 5:10 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Non-title fight, Japan style

Franklin kept the belt because Belfort was making his debut, so it was non-title. Now Belfort is running to MW because he knows he can’t beat Franklin without cheating and hitting to the back of the head.

Great fight, Sonnen is a legit MW and Nate needs another highlight real knockout to prove that he’s the biggest threat to Anderson ever since he lost to his he’s been a wrecking ball.

by Raker on Nov 9, 2009 5:31 PM EST reply actions

me too!

submission will likely get him a shot more than a KO as no-one thinks anderson can be outstruck

It was inevitable

That Marquardt would drop out of the UFC MW title sweepstakes. I really hoping for a true #1 contender with the winner of Hendo/Marq which on paper looked to be a very good fight. Sonnen though is a dangerous, lose lose opponent. A win will not likely move him up, and a loss puts him another 2 years behind. A win for Sonnen is a plus for him, but with the loss to Maia I don’t see a title shot for another few wins at least.

Another thing to watch on the card is Akyama/Silva. Akyama is currently ranked around 10 and 9 on most sites. How far will he go up with a win over Silva?. He is a high profile character and exciting fighter, watch the UFC jump on him as a MW challenger if he does well in the ratings game.

by SimplePsych on Nov 9, 2009 6:20 PM EST reply actions

i actively train with the boys out at Greg’s and let me tell you Nate hasnt been focused like this in the years I have spent there. Before the Maia fight he was like a new man. I think he will beat Sonnen but it isnt going to be easy. Nate has been training alot with Jon Jones which is making both exponentially better.

Marquardt needs to stay busy I guess

But I would have rather seen him against a bigger opponent. Personally, I think he was clearly th e #1 contender until Belfort leapfrogged everybody.

Actually, I would rather see Marquardt Belfort for the next title shot.

by Razzel on Nov 9, 2009 7:24 PM EST reply actions

Sonnen is looking to LnP Marquardt. only Chael is going to be laying on the floor face down praying for a stoppage.

by pop_gun_war on Nov 9, 2009 7:48 PM EST reply actions

WOW

hadn’t even thought of this matchup, and as one of sonnen’s few fans i love it. I really think he can pull out the w in this, his technique should be a great matchup for marquardt’s strength and they both have an outstanding grappling acumen. I’m really interested to see what the line is for this one… i wouldn’t care who lost, i just want this to be a great war.

The biggest advantage for nate is definately his power… sonnen hasn’t faced many guys lately that would bullrush him, and he has been able to use distancing to avoid power shots, but i think nate is a better striker and can find openings.

DAMNIT I’m really excited for this fight now.

by Austin Martin on Nov 9, 2009 8:17 PM EST reply actions
