Jake Shields Claims Cung Le Is Ducking Him

At the post-fight press conference for Strikeforce: Fedor v. Rogers, Jake Shields stated the following:

Cung won't fight me.  That's why he vacated the belt obviously...and then fights a month later.

It was an odd moment with Shields trying to display some personality while giving off facial expressions that seemed to display a level of discomfort.  His point does make sense to a point and it never hurts to try and build up to a big fight but he just didn't look comfortable doing it.  The video is here and around 2:30 is the moment in question.  A side note, the guy who yells "yeah Jake!" is Gilbert Melendez who seemed to spend a lot of time trying to take some of the sting away from the chorus of boos that greeted Shields following his victory.  It was the most aggressive response I've ever seen for a title winner.

Cung had his time at the mic and responded with the fact that he just had a schedule opening because a filming got changed so he got in the gym for two weeks and felt like he could be ready so he took the fight with Smith.

I just hope Strikeforce doesn't chase promoting this fight too hard because Shields actually lost most of his limited "star power" with a dominant but dreadfully boring decision over Miller and Le is apparently only interested in fighting when his movie schedule allows him to do so.

Regardless of the question of ducking, is there any question at all that Shields wins this fight?

by verloc on Nov 8, 2009 2:20 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

No doubt in my mind Shields would win and win quickly with a submission, only because his grappling is so incredible. But last night Shields really proved that he’s not an elite mixed martial artist in my opinion. He is an elite grappler perhaps, but he desperately needs to learn how to apply some ground and pound. It’s fine if he wants to take somebody down repeatedly, but don’t just lay on them and punch them ever-so-softly. Work some submission attempts at least! It’s a fight, not ADCC. I really love the grappling aspect of MMA but even I was bored by his performance in the later rounds. Round 4 in particular was completely shameful.

PS I just heard on a football highlight that one football player today went “Fedor Emelianenko” on some other player! Sweet!

by Cliff Speed on Nov 8, 2009 2:37 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I hear what you’re saying man, there wasn’t a lot of punching and damage, but I kinda think that it’s not just about damage, it’s about control and aggression. Well, Shields had the control, and was aggressively looking for that control. It’s not the ADCC; Mayhem had time on the feet to throw and looked much better than Shields when he did, but the onus is on Mayhem to stop him. Same think with the controlling on the ground; I think Shields held him down because he knew Mayhem would break out if he tried anything. Mayhem is very good on the ground, but in that position, the onus is on Mayhem to escape from that control, not on Shields to try something that will let him escape. Or the ref can stand them up.

Is he an elite? The only way to say that is to put him up against some elite competition that could beat him; I think the most interesting fight is GSP, I think A.Silva would blow him out of the water. I like Zaromskis too, I don’t know what would happen there.

It was the most aggressive response I’ve ever seen for a title winner.

Ive not compared the 2, but Machida got booed pretty heavily after the Shogun fight. Although, maybe that was the decision being booed more than the fighter.

by -Sam on Nov 8, 2009 2:23 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

it was the decision because machida fought his heart out just like shogun. shields is the most boring fighter ever! even more boring than matt hughes imho! shields needs to remember that this shit is on cbs and ppl will think this is mma. boring ppl’s brain out of there scull, with a fighter that doesnt do shit with dominating positions! if you get 1 do something with it dont lay and pray! else you lose in my view…

You are why Sherk and Gurgel lose.

by pdl on Nov 8, 2009 4:13 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

sherk dont just pin someone down he grinds on people and makes them work, Shields on the other hand just locked up Mayhem’s legs and pushed him in the fence and kept him there

Shields had finished his last eight fights before this one and only 2 made it out of the first round. He was trying for submissions and transitioning. Why would he stand and trade when Miller is clearly a stronger striker. he fought someone in 7 seven years, what did we expect would happen.

he was so dominating that he could end the fight if he worked his gnp better, come guys… :x

by STEVENvanGEEL on Nov 8, 2009 6:35 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Sherk boxes because people think anything on the ground is ghey or boring, even when someone is rapidly transitioning, working from a dominant position, but is unable to finish a very game opponent. So now we have to deal with Sherk/Koscheck/Gurgel syndrome.

by pdl on Nov 8, 2009 6:52 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Shields finished eight straight leading up to Miller, Lawler, Daley Thompson etc Shields is an exciting fighter, he could be the KING KONG of the welterweight division in SF, but he is fighting in the MW div. because it has several top 10-20 fighters (WW has only a couple top20)
Shields is fighting the bigger, more highly ranked opponents for NO additional pay, all he gets is “more compelling fights” Respect Shields !!!

I sat there...

while a guy was 3 feet away from Shields screaming that he is the worst fighter on earth and people SCREAMED “BOOOO!” in his face. it was…really bad

Wow.. thats harsh. The booing was definitely audible in the broadcast, but that level of viciousness didnt come across.

by -Sam on Nov 8, 2009 3:47 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

jake shields style of fighting almost put me to sleep.

i think cung le with those legs kicks of his to the stomach and legs could keep shields away and hopefully he could land a kick to shields temple and knock out shields and his boring azz style of fighting.

Yeah, but they boo’d his walk out, it was like half the crowd came right from watching MTV. The 3 guys behind me boo’d (they shouted USA during the Fedor fight) I asked them why they didn’t like Shields, guy says I don’t know him, but Mayhem is really cool.

Does anyone but Shields care?

by Dabashire on Nov 8, 2009 3:21 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Shields did more or less the same thing as Cain against Kongo, yet he sucks and Cain rocks.

by dancingChicken on Nov 8, 2009 3:29 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I’m not a huge Cain fan, but even though he couldn’t finish Kongo, he was at least dishing out some punishment. He beat him up for three full rounds.

by kid_eh on Nov 8, 2009 3:36 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, people like to see blood and bruises. Thats what makes the fight exciting (this and unconscious man on the ground).

by dancingChicken on Nov 8, 2009 4:02 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

it has nothing to do with “blood and bruses” but its the fact that shields could not do any thing in the form of offence, just keep mayhem down. DOnt get me wrong a win is a win but he said he could beat GSP, after seeing him last night he would get destroyed against GSP.
Mayhem hardly had any damage on him, Rothwell and Knogo is another story

by Riley_96 on Nov 8, 2009 5:42 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Aparently it has something to do with “blood and bruises”, because you’re another person who says something about “damage”.There was grappling offence in that fight. He didn’t just keep him down. There were a lot of sweeps, transitions, submission attempts.
I understand that Cain’s 250 soft punches made his fight with Kongo worth watching, but his ground controll sucks and is boring.

cain inflicts damage

and seems busier when his powerless shots are flying in at like 15 punches in 8 seconds

sheilds did what mayhem said he wouldnt do, get the takedown, and hold him there

i kinda wanted more from miller i guess, so i vent my frustration on sheilds being boring

even though he did what he set out to do

oh well

Not you. You said only it was boring. I would say it was monotonous.
But if I didn’t watch the fight, and read all the comments I would have thought that it was bad fight.

by blubber_guard on Nov 8, 2009 3:49 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Its not ducking, its just smart

Cung isn’t trying to be the best MW in the world. He just wants to come in and put on some fun fights for the fans and collect a big paycheck + added starpower for his efforts. Therefore, he is only looking to take on stand up fighters that like to slug.

Smith is the perfect opponent for him. Its a guaranteed show. Shields would be a terrible choice. It would probably be a very lopsided and boring loss

Jordan Breen was talking bout how a couple Strikeforce fighters are bad matchups for Shields

Jacare would be a bad matchup for Shields because Jacare is simply better on the ground than Shields is. Jacare may even have better standup than Shields. Lindland is also a bad matchup for Shields because Lindland would be much harder to take down, and I could see Lindland lay n preying on Shields.

I caught up with Cung and he talked about how the fight went down and why he prefers Smith to Shields as an opponent.

A far as Jake looking uncomfortable and calling out Cung like a douche, I think its safe to assume Shields learned to fight because he got his ass kicked a lot as a kid. I remember guys like him, and they never stopped talking, even after they got manhandled at lunch.

by judonerd on Nov 8, 2009 6:08 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Why yes, that’s the very definition of a safe assumption!

by JRN on Nov 8, 2009 6:27 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

What are you talking about?

Shields has a big mouth? Shields got his ass kicked a lot as a kid even though he was a good high school wrestler?

by hlebtasic on Nov 8, 2009 6:57 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

yes, he has a big mouth and talks a lot of unecessary trash, and yeah, im SPECULATING that a lot of fights in the playground caused by his mouth led to him joining the wrestling team and learning how to fight—the reason that a LOT of people learn how to fight, to keep from getting their ass kicked again.

I love watching Cung fight, but there is no doubt he’s in the same camp as Frank Shamrock, Tito, Chuck, Kimbo, Matt Hughes, etc – fighters that get called out a lot because the rewards of beating them are significantly greater than the risk of fighting them.

by Jahbulon on Nov 8, 2009 10:09 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

damn brent brookhouse ? i think your words were pretty damn harsh!! there was some excellent jiujitsu in that fight and the transitions were beautiful and it was like a breath of fresh air because the jiujitsu in most mma fight is terrible! I guess there arent any jiujitsu fighters posting here..very sad.
Im not saying Jake would beat Cung but it would be entertaining watching Jake try and take Cung down.

Whats with the hate ?

by radamez85 on Nov 8, 2009 11:47 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Sort legs?

Does jake have short legs or something? I was screaming for him to get the bodylock the whole fight. He was on mayhem’s back plenty of times and could never hold it. He finaly got a body lock in the 5th round and couldnt hold it . Was really dissapointed in his back controol .

Shields was boo’ed during his walk out, it was strange like half the room just came from watching Bully Beatdown. The 3 guys behind me were booing(during the Fedor fight they started a USA chant) I asked them why they didn’t like Shields. Guy says I don’t know about him but Mayhem is really cool.
