Strikeforce 'Fedor vs Rogers' Results': Jake Shields Dominates Jason "Mayhem" Miller
The Strikeforce Middleweight Championship fight delivered with sustained back and forth action on the ground and standing in five tough rounds. Jake Shields took a unanimous decision despite having been saved by the bell while trapped in a rear naked choke at the end of the third round.
Jason "Mayhem" Miller made a very dramatic entrance with multiple dancers and a costume change, but Referee "Big" John McCarthy got the biggest pop of the night thus far when he was announced.
Shields took the fight down within seconds but Mayhem sat up against the cage and stymied him for thirty seconds before Shields took him all the way down and took his back then rolled to mount. But Miller got the fight back to the feet by the three minute mark in the round with a very impressive sweep. But Shields managed to get the fight down to the ground again quickly. Miller reversed and then slammed Shields down. Miller suplexed Shields twice more before the end of the round.
Round 2 saw Miller open with a hard left hook that bloodied Shields' nose. But soon Shields was attaining dominant position and regaining dominant position everytime Miller reversed or escaped. Several times Shields used positions familiar to MMA students from Eddie Bravo's Twister system. With a minute left, Shields threatened a rear naked choke but Miller escaped and ended the round on top with Shields threatening a heel hook.
Miller came out on punching in the third and took Shields down with authority. But again Miller found himself reversed and once again on his back. Shields transitioned from one dominant position to another but couldn't score a submission or do much damage. Miller ended the round with Shields' back, a figure four body lock and and a locked on rear naked choke but the bell rang and saved Shields.
Entering the championship rounds, Miller had clearly sent Shields a message by not only surviving but come the closest to scoring a submission. After a standup from McCarthy, Miller attacked aggressively but Shields quickly got a takedown and was in side control. Many transitions ensued, but Miller never managed to escape Shields' smothering control in the fourth.
In the final round, Miller came out swinging but Shields quickly worked for a takedown and Miller found himself on his back once again. Shields took his back with the figure four leglock but never seriously threatened a submission. Shields survived a reversal and a threatened guillotine to ice the decision.

Sheilds did “dominate” but just for reference……THAT was lackluster.

Shields only dominated positionally, Mayhem extricated himself from every sub attempt and caused more damage. Clearly Shields won, but I wouldn’t call it “dominating.”
Also note that either of these guys would have Cung Le playing the 3-tap symphony quicker than you can say “Mayhem Monkeys.”

What a lame fight. Laying on somebody for 5 rounds is not really a respectable strategy. Nobody wants to watch that.

Shields won.

Laying on somebody?!?!
That was one of the most dynamic ground wars I’ve ever seen, what the hell are you talking about “laying on somebody for 5 round”?!

Silly Miller fans is all. The guy got completely dominated and controlled, so they have to think of some way to disparage Shields win.

I'M A Miller fan
But if you don’t enjoy a ground game THAT dynamic, why the hell are you watching MMA at all?! Boxing is out there, K1 is out there, there are sports dedicated to the stand up, go watch those.

No idea man, no idea
I guess because MMA is popular now, but some people just want it to be the Tough Man Competitions.

The fight was exciting. It was frustrating, though. Watching it you got the sense that Shields wouldn’t be able to finish the fight no longer how long it went, but that he’d be able to control position long enough to take the decision. He won and he deserved it, but fights like that leave a bad taste in my mouth.

I found it a tad frustrating too. I just knew that bloody single leg was gonna get it to the ground every time, and I suppose I was rooting for Mayhem, but I thought it was a pretty good fight, though there was a lot of dry humping by shields. The guy never seemed to get very close to a submission, and didn’t seem to ever hurt Mayhem or put him in danger from strikes despite getting mount multiple times.
It was a lot like watching Guida fight, except he doesn’t look like he just climbed out of a swamp. Personally I find Guida fights a little more entertaining.
Overall it was a good fight.

These were exactly my sentiments after the fight.

This shield fight drove me crazy, shield’s gsp is really bad, all those full mount and so little damage. Jacare would probably eat shield, but I don’t think they will be thrilled to make it happen any time soon.

tough to judge
miller did more damage and was closer to finishing, but shields was a jiujitsu koala the whole fight
by cagefightonacid on Nov 8, 2009 4:09 AM EST via mobile reply actions 0 recs
it was actually a very easy fight to judge..
Mayhem got controlled for almost the entire fight, but he won the third because he almost ended the fight.

you're right
i shouldn’t have used the word judge, i just meant as far as more damage and being closer to ending the fight

Man, Shields stand up is awful. His defense consists of two stiff hands and one closed eye.

Fortunately, Mr Millers sprawl is even worse.
Jake was able to take him down with some of the weakest looking single legs ever, and he was able to do it from WAY outside without setting up the shot at all.
Mayhem has no one to blame but himself. Maybe next time he’ll spend more time in the wrestling room than in dance studio.

Rec'd
Time to be an adult, Mr. Miller. The rambunctious 8-year old act is old.

Bad sprawl plus shitty game plan (or no game plan). I was amazed that he tried to clinch with Shields, even after 238485 takedowns…

He didn’t have time to gameplan, he had to work on his entrance and faces he would make for the camera.

This would be an interesting case in how the announcers influence what people think of a fight.
If that was in the UFC I think Rogan would have had at least 3 orgasms during the fight because of all the ground work. Those announcers really made it seem a lot closer than it was, and they really seemed like they didn’t like thee ground game at all (besides everyone patting shamrock on the back for about half a round for the monkey roll).

Absolutely. Those guys were all over Miller like stink on a skunk.

Miller is ok
but after that fight I have no interest what so ever to watch Shields fight ever again.

Jake 'Boring Boy' Shields.
Ok so Shields won fair…
but I just gotta say… Most Boring Fighter In The History Of The Sport.
If you aren’t going to try to finish the fight, don’t bother making those takedowns and working that position. Sure, on the scorecards this wins you the match. But unlike Machida who avoids damage but does fight, Shields just grabs someone and incapacitates his opponent from fighting… and even that didn’t work too well seeing as he definitely got saved by the bell from getting choked out. There are plenty of wrestlers out there that show how wrestling can win fights with ground n pound, submissions or slams. Jake Shields refuses to do anything of the sort.
I really want to see a rematch, and this time I want to see Shields actually fighting instead of just laying on top of Mayhem like some bag of sand.
Not just a non-crowd pleasing fight… but also just bad from Shields who did everything in his power to avoid an actual fight taking place.
For the record… the Merriam-Webster definition of the word FIGHT:
1 a : to contend in battle or physical combat; especially : to strive to overcome a person by blows or weapons b : to engage in boxing
2 : to put forth a determined effort
Neither was done by Shields, who won the match but definitely didn’t fight.

ps: if it had been a college wrestling match he wouldve certainly done a great job, but this is MMA… not wrestling. You win by KO, TKO, submission or when the timespan doesn’t permit those, there is a scoring system (in serious need of rethinking) to determine a winner.
