Strikeforce 'Fedor vs Rogers' Results': Gegard Mousasi Batters Out Sokoudjou in Two
In a non-title fight featuring the Strikeforce Light heavyweight champ Gegard Mousasi against the once highflying Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou, it took almost two rounds for the top light heavyweight to assert his dominance with a brutal display of ground and pound.
In the first round, Mousasi stalked Sokoudjou down and managed to avoid Sokoudjou's power. A low blow from Mousasi was the first notable action. After a heated exchange, Sokoudjou managed to take the fight to the ground with 1:30 left in the round. But Mousasi quickly reversed positions and got side control. Sokodjou was able to explode out of danger and threatened with a choke. The round nearly ended with Sokoudjou on top but Mousasi pulled a reversal at the end.
In the second Mousasi forced Sokoudjou up against the fence and opened up with punches and knees before the fight went to the ground and Mousasi finished him.

Well well
Looks like cardio isn’t Sokoudjou’s only issue. I know Machida also swept him from the bottom after being taken down, didn’t Babalu do so to Sokoudjou as well? Takedowns are only “effective grappling” so long as you can keep top position, and all that.

Maybe that’s why he always avoided using his judo in the past? Dunno, but he looked very impressive in that first round.

I’m a little disappointed people aren’t giving Soko much credit. He was doing VERY well in that first round, especially when you consider all the hype around Gegard. Finally used his Judo, against Mousasi none the less.
I think I feel that Soko impressed more in defeat than Gegard did in his victory.

He came in the ring looking very confident and cocky, throwing his arms wide at the very beginning. I think it’s likely his ego may be getting to him and he doesn’t take his training as seriously?

Soko should leave boring fighters camp and join people who will teach him something. He’s young, he should learn, and TQ isn’t known for developing fighters. I wonder how many times Soko has to lose (gas, break mentally) to realize this.

Soko did very well in that first round. The man has power and grappling technique. One gap in his game, beside cardio, is his inability to capitalize when in top position, either with strikes or submission attempts. Both men spent some time on top, but the difference is Musasi rained punches when he had the chance while Soko did no ground and pound whatsoever.

just watched the fight again… gegard lost a few exchanges and probably the first round, and he had to adjust the game plan, but i dont think he was ever in danger or that the balance was tipping.
Soku looked great but his mind always takes a walk 5 mins into a fight. I always root for him and get disappointed, and i dont think the problem is cardio. I think if a fight isnt easy or quick, he has real problems overcoming it.
