Strikeforce 'Fedor vs Rogers' Results: Fabricio Werdum Takes a Lackluster Decision Over Antonio Silva

Werdum_mediumIn a fight to determine who might get the next shot at Fedor Emelianenko, the #1 heavyweight in the world, neither fighter left fans excited about their prospects to beat the best in the world.

Fabricio Werdum took a unanimous decision.

In the first, Antonio Silva opened the fight by stunning Werdum with a takedown and a barrage of shots on the ground.

But Werdum survived the early onslaught and turned it into a fight by surviving the first round. The second round featured more of the groundfighting you'd expect from two jiu jitsu black-belts. But Werdum was unable to get the submission in the 2nd or do much damage on the ground.

In the third, Werdum took Silva down and got his back with three minutes left, but couldn't keep Silva on the ground. But he tagged Silva with several knees standing while working for another take down. With a minute left, Werdum stunned Silva with a standing knee that dropped Silva. Werdum followed him down and dominated the rest of the fight on the ground.

Fabricio Werdum, the #13 heavyweight in the world came in favored against Antonio Silva, the #22 ranked fighter on the USAT/SBN Consensus MMA rankings.

Werdum washed out of the UFC after getting KTFO'd by Junior dos Santos. Silva was the EliteXC heavyweight champion before testing positive for steroids and spending the last year or more fighting in Japan.

I thought it was a good fight but it wasn’t amazing or anything and neither guy looks like they would be a challenge for Fedor…I mean the winner of Fedor/Rogers

I dunno, Nate. It was pretty exciting. Lots of action early and solid technique late.

I was thoroughly entertained.

I specializes in grammar fail.

Agreed...

may not have been a knockout or submission but that fight was anything but lackluster…..especially for heavyweights.

I agreed

Fabricio was scared to engage until the very end and Silva seemingly had zero gameplan. Zero.

Have to disagree

Maybe my expectations have been tapered after watching TUF heavyweights run out of steam after 2 minutes, but I thought this fight was very exciting considering the size of the fighters. There was some vicious blows landed by both fighters, mixed in with a good amount of creative ground game. Better fight than 90% of HW fights.

I didn’t think that fight was bad at all.

It was a pretty good fight. It would have been nice to see better conditioning, but they never got full on sloppy. I loved it when Werdum went for that kneebar in the scramble.

Decent fight. Werdum tried some bobbing and weaving, so he must be pretty confident. But he should stick to 228 lbs.

I loved that fight

We saw some kickboxing, some grappling, a lot of back-and-forth action. I was really impressed. And I wouldn’t say anyone gassed out – they slowed down, sure, but nobody gassed out.

I loved that fight. Would have been even better if Silva stayed smart and knocked Werdum out.
