Swick Laughs Hughes Off, "It Wouldn't Even be a Fight"
Mike ‘Quick’ Swick has laughed off Matt Hughes’ comments that neither he nor his American Kickboxing Academy teammate Josh Koscheck are in his league. Somewhat incredulous, Swick dismissed the remark as "silly" and said if anything it would be Hughes that is out of his depth.
As far as not being worthy of fighting him? That's silly to me. I don't think he beats any of us. I mean, I don't think it would even be a fight," Swick said in an interview with Heavy.com this week."He's a tough guy and he's a very talented fighter. The reason we wanted to fight him isn't because we're picking on him, but because he's a top-level fighter."
"He's one of the highest-ranked fighters and one of the most accomplished fighters in the UFC. It's out of respect that we wanted to fight him. If he doesn't think we're in his league, that's kind of crazy to me, because I don't think he could beat any of us. I just don't think he could beat us. Maybe he knows something we don't know."
"The only thing I know is that he definitely hasn't stepped up and fought any of us," added Swick, who faces Dan ’The Outlaw’ Hardy at next week’s UFC 105 event.
"He doesn't want to fight any of the guys from AKA. He didn't have an opponent when I needed an opponent, he didn't have an opponent when Koscheck needed an opponent and he didn't have an opponent when Fitch needed an opponent. Those are all top-level guys which he could fight, and they would be good fights."

I respect Hughes run and place as a former champ and I do think he’s gun shy (ducking) the AKA stable because he has nothing to gain at this point. He probably would lose to all 3 but Swick and company calling him is just as bad. Calling a former UFC champ that is well on the down slope of his career and fighting skills is just sad and pointless. They are all in their primes and a prime Hughes would have more than likely defeated them. Swick should just prepare for his inevitable domination by GSP. I don’t even like Matty but cmon..the boys at AKA won’t even fight each other which to me is a far bigger cop out than Hughes not fighting them. At least he knows to avoid the embarassment.

Meh
I think even prime Hughes gets clobbered by Koscheck and gets worked by Fitch. Swick, not so sure if he could stop the takedown, so that would be a more even fight.
But it is pointless for them to be calling Hughes out, it’s the same as Tito calling Chuck out. Just a cowardly, classless thing to do.

Hughes does lack the striking game that Kos and Fitch have, not that it’s anything special. I’m looking forward to see how Anthony Johnson does against Kos because he impresses me far more than Swick and Fitch.

Well
I will say that Koscheck’s standup game has improved leaps and bounds. He has the kind of power in his hands where he can knock guys like Trigg and Yoshida senseless, and he does a good job of using his wrestling to dictate where the action of the fight takes place.
Kos just got wild, sloppy, and overconfident against PT, and GSP pretty much just outclassed him (although he was certainly a game opponent).
And Fitch would beat Hughes everywhere- standup, wrestling, grappling, etc. Even a prime Hughes would succumb to the top control wizard known as Jon Fitch.

I agree.
Hughes would have more than he could handle versus Koscheck & Fitch, but he would take Swick down and pound his face into a fine pudding.

Me thinks Swick is just trying to pick a fight.

They see Hughes being ranked highly, and don’t think he deserves it at this point of his career. They’re just trying to fix the rankings guys!
Seriously, who has Matt Hughes lost to? GSP and a 4 lbs over Alves? An avenged loss to Penn? I’m far from a Hughes fan (was at UFC 98 rooting for Serra) but lets not act like he’s totally washed up and useless. I see him powering through Condit, Kampmann, Hardy, Swick, Paulo Thiago, and most of the UFC WW division. Koscheck and Fitch are just hellacious style match-ups for him, and he’s smart to avoid them. If he fights Swick, then he sets up the AKA revenge storyline that Paulo Thiago was on. I say he’s earned the right to turn down opponents at this point in his career, as much as I’d love to see him get clobbered by Fitch.

i would’ve been pretty upset with the AKA guys calling out elder statesman if it wasn’t hughes
matt hughes is a dick and i hope he gets KTFO’ed by somebody, anybody!

Hughes is finished.
He was king in an era when one fighting style was enough to be the champ. GSP showed him his way is the old way, and he hasn’t shown anything since.
Beating Serra? Pish.
Hughes loses Trigg-style to any of those three.

LMAO . . . and right on.
Seriously, WTF does Hughes gain by fighting Mike Swick, he’s a nobody, never has been.

Hughes would have trouble with swick and his speed, until he gets swick on the ground the game over! Koscheck is a loser, too big in his own mind his hair is curled to tight. Fitch is the only threat, but lacks the veteran stripes hughes has.

I really HATE it when fighters do this
When a big name fighter starts to show signs of decline, there are always a couple douchebag fighters that think it’s cool to call them out. Congrats AKA guys, you are now officially on Titos level.
