Quote of the Day 2: The Nothingness of Fedor Emelianenko's Stare
"He's definitely a different fighter," said Rogers of the heavyweight champion, who will put his legacy and nine-year unbeaten streak on the line Saturday on CBS (9 p.m. ET/PT). "I look into his eyes and I see nothing. I don't see if he's serious. I don't see if he's trying to be funny. I can't sense anything from him. A lot of people say, 'Don't pay attention to his demeanor because it will psyche you out.' It's true. I feel that."

We're just a million little gods causin' rain storms, turning every good thing to rust.
“If you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.”
someone’s been watching Flashforward. This is kinda wierd that I just got done watching it on Hulu before switching back to BE and read the comments.
I've never watched the show
because I read the book about a year ago. Judging from the previews it looks like they took too many liberties with the story. I started reading Nietzsche after watching 2001: A Space Odyssey.
just thought it was ironic that I just got done hearing someone use the same quote then read it on a completely unrelated blog 2 mins later.
that quote is supposedly about confronting your own free will — standing on the edge of the cliff (abyss) and knowing nothing but personal choice stops you from jumping to your death
kinda like signing the contract to fight Fedor.
My interpretation has always been
something like “if you lie with dogs, you’ll wake up with fleas.” The more you examine and encounter the unseemly, the more it becomes a part of you.
A lot of people say, ’Don’t pay attention to his demeanor because it will psyche you out.’ It’s true. I feel that.
Rogers has already lost.

Oh come on , just because of that you think he’ll lose ? If he’s gonna lose it’s because he’s not good enough …Arlovski went to the ring like a lion and look what happened . Also Ogawa , Nogueira was confident against Fedor in both fights , Cro Cop , Randleman …Coleman …they were all confident and lost .
And btw Brett seems confident to me too , this statement doesn’t really say much.
Welcome to MMA...
When he said he didn’t feel psyched out and that Fedor is just another man people were throwing around “he already lost because he doesn’t ‘get it’” now he says that he is a little bit psyched out by the demeanor and it’s that he already lost because he gets it.

His gaze freaks me the fuck out and I'm watching it on TV.
Imagine if he was looking at you in person and both of you know you’re going to fight soon.

I have this sinking feeling that Rogers is ‘just dumb enough to win’, as the saying goes. Not a comment on his intelligence in any way whatsoever. Rather, he has a very simple, straight forward style and, mentally, he seems completely unaware of what he’s getting into. Sometimes that works for a fighter/athlete/team when faced with a seemingly monumental challenge.
We’ve seen these kinds of upsets under the same circumstances in all sports.
I really don’t like this fight for Fedor.
I specializes in grammar fail.
You could have a point...
Reminds me a little Bowles when he went to fight Torres, completely unfazed.
by mburtoni on Nov 6, 2009 1:04 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
Yeah, but we all knew that Torres was reckless and would eventually get caught. It’s not like we never saw him in trouble before, 2 out of 3 of his fights previous to Bowles were all out wars, and he wasn’t exactly dominating. Great fighter, I love him, and I hope he comes back stronger and a little more cautious, but I knew he’d get caught eventually.
I don’t think you can say the same of Fedor
The difference is really that Fedor HAS been caught before. The Randleman suplex, the Fujita “salmon dance” right hand, and others…Of course after each of those incidents, Fedor finished the fight less than a minute later. So thus far, “catching Fedor” has been like catching a great white shark, you’re really just bringing him into the boat with you, and good luck!

"catching Fedor" has been like catching a great white shark, you're really just bringing him into the boat with you"
Classic.
That was pretty much my point,
we’ve seen glimpses of what would be Torres’ downfall before it actually happened. Fedor has looked cool, collected, and in control through the worst of it all, so I don’t think the Torres/Bowles comparison was valid
Yeah I wasn’t really arguing with you or anything, just honing your point. I think we’d both agree that the difference between Fedor and any other great fighter, whether GSP, Machida, Anderson, or whoever, is that all the questions have already been answered along the way. The only one left is just how long will Fedor continue on as he is. He’s still fairly young, and I’d guess he’s got a few prime years left in him.

common man ..... Fedor is # 1
he has to fight top comp, and big scary dudes. and win….that is why he is considered the best. cant wait for Lashley to sign with SF …. so Fedia will SUB or KO him. that will put Fedor haters in their corner.
Why on Earth would Fedor beating Bobby Lashley put Fedor haters in a corner? Lashley barely beat Jason f’n Guida… Lashley isn’t even close to being highly ranked. Wtf?

I think the sweater is the key....
Think about it, Fedor always seems to have human emotions whenever he wears it, maybe thats how you can beat him, make him wear it to a fight!!!!
Everyone has a game plan, untell they get hit.
Sweater is his soul? His connection to his human half that his cyborg half occasionally permits…?

Is that Aleks he’s pushing that monkey to? Good thing it’s Fedor that’s doing that – any one else would run the risk of getting murdered were they to do something like that.

the great thing about Fedor’s “look” is that he doen’t look like he wants to hurt you or doesn’t want to hurt you. when he fights, he looks like he’s completely indifferent to human life. you’re simply another body to him.
i like that demeanor.
I see every opponent as a man that tries to put me back to that poorer period. That man has to be eliminated.

Fedor enjoys destroying people like I enjoy drawing pictures
Its a game, a sport to him. He doesn’t seem to need to hate or tap into emotion to fight.

More proof for my point: Fedor is not human. He is a machine. Unfortunately, Vadim Finkelstein has the kill switch in his pocket.
Note: in Fedor’s case, “kill switch” means the switch that makes him fight.

the 12 faces of Fedor
A few years back I read an article called the 12 faces of Fedor it showed him in 12 different situations all with the same expression. It’s almost like he goes into a trance and just turns into a stone faced statue. If any one knows that article post it. it’s worth a look.
this one?

Fedor's sweater vs Aoki's pants
Which one has more magical properties and what if they were worn at the same time?
Yeah, that was the fight in which Wanderlei talked all sorts of shit and pissed CroCop off to no end.

My favorite Fedor moment
is that you tube video of Fedor in his locker room watching Aleks fight Cro Cop. When Aleks gets smashed, you can see Fedor licking his chops to return the favor. That is the most emotion I have ever seen from the Cyborg.

Just to add a small personal insight to this.
I was at the recent M-1 event in Kansas City where Fedor and Mousasi gave their grappling exhibition. After the event, I waited in line at the Fedor autograph signing, to have my fight program signed by him.
When I stepped up to give him my book, I made eye contact as he handed it back. I’m not simply saying this for dramatic effect now, but simply recounting what I thought at the time – he has a VERY odd look. He looked directly at me and yet I couldn’t see ANYTHING that was going on upstairs. It was actually unnerving, and this was at a damn autograph session!!! Like someone above said, imagine if I received that look in the ring when I was about to fight him!
Fedor is a very unique individual.
