Add Gerald Harris To The List Of Veterans Applying For TUF

Put Gerald Harris’ name among the other established MMA veterans that want a shot to earn their way in to the Octagon by going through "The Ultimate Fighter" reality series. While other names being rumored to be applying for the next season of the show are coming off of disappointing stretches in their careers or periods of inactivity, Harris is one of the hottest middleweights in the sport at the moment.

Harris (16-2), a contestant on season seven of the show, lost to Amir Sadollah during his stay in the house, was only one of a few fighters from the show not to compete at the finale.

Since the show wrapped, Harris has gone 6-0 with five of his wins coming by first round stoppage. His most recent bout saw him become the Shark Fights middleweight champion, destroying former UFC signee Nissen Osterneck in just 46 seconds. ‘Hurricane’ has also greatly improved his grappling over the last two years, winning one of the largest NAGA grappling tournaments earlier this year.

All of this success has lead to a stack of offers sitting on Gerald’s desk. He has recently received, or currently has, offers from Strikeforce, Dream, Sengoku, not to mention the many regional promotions that would like to see him in the cage. However, Gerald has repeatedly held on to his dream to one day fight in the Octagon.

With some luck, UFC officials will take note of Harris' desire and sacrifice and give him another shot to live his dream.

I doubt that he would get a second chance on the show, especially since he was only only a couple of seasons ago.

He def. has a big future ahead, and i think signing with strikeforce and making his way through the MW’s there will really help his career

Huh?

Of course he would get an opportunity. If he wants in, I bet my pants he’s in.

I don’t know man… he’s one of the best middleweights out there who’s unsigned right now. He fucking crushed Nissen Osterneck into a coma

Shouldn't need to be on TUF

He’s evolved from being a one dimensional wrestler. His past performances have earned him the shot in the UFC I thought they would’ve given him anyway after TUF7. While not as exciting back then, he did look like he had a lot of potential.

Consider this

A potential 12k/12k deal or a major self-marketing opportunity with a six figure deal to start? Maybe he knows what he’s doing..

Harris has already been there and done that. There is no point in him going through the stress that could put on his body again. This means weight cutting and fighting somewhere from 2-4 times in 6 weeks – depending if they fight to get into the house and if there are two weight classes or not.

Even supposing Gerald does win the show – he puts in prep time before the show, lives in the house for 6 weeks, and waits another 6 months until the TUF Finale to get his first payday (unsure if they still give those finishing bonuses). Then he is stuck on a 6-fight contract where he can be dropped after a loss.

Instead of not getting paid for 9 months, he could have fought 2-3 times for pay with wins that would actually go on his record.

Would you argue that Todd Duffee should have gone on TUF?

That six-figure deal is bogus. I could offer somebody a six-figure contract to work for me for five years. It’s over a large number of fights, and you can be cut after a loss. Though, if you are the TUF champion you do get more leeway when you are losing (Danzig).

If you make it known that you’re willing to go on TUF as an established veteran for 0 dollars, the UFC knows they already have your nuts in a vice grip before you sit down to negotiate.

Harris is not in the same position as say, David Loiseau – who absolutely needs TUF to have any chance at getting back into the big show.

Dude--

You’re basically calling this guy an idiot. He is trying to get on the show, end of story.

He's not

He’s just saying Harris deserves better. Which he does.

If that’s his only route in, and that’s what he wants, then that’s how it has to be.

But passing up guaranteed money for a marketing opportunity (as part of a strategy to earn more money) is quite misguided.

The guy wants into the UFC, period. If that means he has to go through TUF to get there, then so be it. Everyone and their brother knows he’s ready, knows he’s been crushing guys. Yet he still doesn’t have his chance.

Hopefully, Joe Silva or Dana stop either sleeping on this guy or holding whatever they have against him and give the guy a chance.

It would be shame to have him go to Strikeforce and do very very well there and they missed him, not once, or twice, but three times.
