Strikeforce Preview: Can Rameau Sokoudjou Derail Gegard Mousasi's Rise?
In what could turn out to be one of the more lopsided battles on the main card at Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers, DREAM Middleweight Grand Prix champion and surging light heavyweight prospect Gegard Mousasi (26-2-1) will battle underachieving former UFC and PRIDE veteran Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou (7-4) in a three-round non-title bout. Sokoudjou is coming off two straight wins within the framework of DREAM's Super Hulk tournament over former K-1 kickboxer Jan Nortje and Japanese MMA icon Bob "The Beast" Sapp. Mousasi enters this contest as unbeaten in thirteen straight bouts with his most recent victory coming at Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg in which he dispatched of former RINGS and UFC veteran Renato "Babalu" Sobral in one minute.
Mousasi's kickboxing and amateur boxing background coupled with his Judo and jiu-jitsu training have made him one of the most complete light heavyweights in the world today. At only 24 years of age, he has yet to fully grow into his frame as many expect will happen in the next few years. There is talk that he'll eventually ascend to the heavyweight ranks and fill out his frame with muscle, but for now -- he seems content with gaining more exposure in North America within the structure of Strikeforce with the potential to head to the UFC in the future.
Sokoudjou has his work cut out for him. Mousasi's stoic demeanor, calmness, and ferocity once a fight begins could be compared to that of Fedor Emelianenko in the context of the light heavyweight frame that Mousasi currently embodies. He's managed to finish off eleven of his last thirteen opponents, and he crushed what many consider to be his toughest test in Renato "Babalu" Sobral. Sokoudjou, on the other hand, has continued to have problems following his upset victories over Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Ricardo Arona at PRIDE 33 and PRIDE 34 respectively.
Most complaints have stemmed from Sokoudjou's reluctance to unleash his hands on opponents, and his grappling game is lacking as he was submitted by both Lyoto Machida and Renato "Babalu" Sobral. While the Cameroon-born judoka could provide a stiff test for Mousasi in a clinch game in which his superior Judo skills could come into play, Mousasi's hands and abilities on the floor are much more polished than that of Sokoudjou.
The Super Hulk appearances by Sokoudjou didn't suggest that we should have any real confidence that he can give Mousasi a challenge, but Sokoudjou's strength and power are always a factor. I'd give him a puncher's chance at connecting with a shot against Mousasi in this battle, but the ground war will be to Mousasi's advantage. Mousasi can outclass Sokoudjou in the stand-up game as well as he seems to be a much more technical puncher than that of Sokoudjou. It just becomes a question as to whether Mousasi wants to risk wading into the power of Sokoudjou's hands or not.
Gegard Mousasi should be able to defeat the former UFC veteran in this non-title contest. Sokoudjou only truly offers a danger in his power in the striking department, and he'll need to overcome his inability to unload his hands in order to punch out Mousasi. While I'm keen on Mousasi, this is still a brutal sport in which upsets do happen. It just so happens that Sokoudjou was the winner in one of the biggest upsets in MMA history. Could he pull off another major upset? We'll find out on Saturday night.

That’s really all Sokoudjou has in this fight is a puncher’s chance.

I think he has already used up his lifetime of ‘punchers chance’ victories with his wins over Rogerio and Arona.

Not only that
But Machida and Babalu both showed that his above-cited judo game isn’t to be feared too much. (There’s a reason that Sokoudjou’s takedown success against Machida isn’t remembered the way Shogun’s striking success was…)

My job is to get a little hype for this fight into your heads… but:
In what could turn out to be one of the more lopsided battles on the main card at Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Rogers, DREAM Middleweight Grand Prix champion and surging light heavyweight prospect Gegard Mousasi (26-2-1) will battle underachieving former UFC and PRIDE veteran Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou (7-4) in a three-round non-title bout.
I thought this sort of cemented my thoughts. It’s going to be a lopsided beatdown with Mousasi winning.

I wasn’t referring just to this post, but to all your prediction threads in general. It would be nice to see the information used to make a prediction, whether it turns out to be right or wrong. It’s not big deal in the grander scheme of things.

Babalu was a bigger test for Mousasi than Soko
and we all saw how he handled that. I dont think Soko has any type of chance here but I guess stranger things have happened.
I think if Sokodjou beats Mousasi it hurts Strikeforce not only because he is your lhw champ and would still be but Mousasi is one of the few guys Strikeforce has where he is a decent talent and never been in the UFC.
When Strikeforce has certain guys like a Lawler or Werdum when they win the UFC fanboys can just say they would still get crushed in the UFC.

So far
I think this is one of the most lopsided polls I’ve seen on BE. Currently at 90% for Mousasi. With Werdum currently at 62% and an expected lopsided vote for Fedor, does this make the Strikeforce results a bit predictable?

Unless Soko can beat Mousasi in like 2 min, I dont see him winning.
Because anything after 2 minutes he gases and is already mentally broken.

45 second blitz by Soko, then he wilts like a scared little girl. Easy win for Mousasi.

No offence but the MMA media buys into hype too much...
Yes Mousasi is a good fighter and has potential to be great but I don’t think its reasonable or rational to not give Sokoudjou a chance. This is going to be a good fight. Sokoudjou is no chump, since coming to the US he HAS lost three times BUT all to exceptional opponents. For starters Machida went on to become LHW champ and Babalou was already a top 10 opponent and Luis Cane, well we don’t yet know how far he could go. He could well end up challenging for the title. So there’s no shame in losing to these guys, there are all very tough fights for someone who is very young and inexperienced. So seriuosly, give the guy a break. He’s not weak willed either, he’s taken those losses really badly and would probably love to prove everyone wrong.
While I think Mousasi will win I think he is facing a very dangerous opponent and should be very happy with the win. Sokodjou is very athletic, quick, good stand up and probably an underrated ground game – afterall he has only been submitted by black belts. No shame in that at all.

I know MMA math isn’t the best but I think in this case it has some merit because the fights both happened in the last 10 months- Babalu pretty much had his way with Soko while Gegard completely destroyed Babalu. I say Mousasi finishes this within the first three or four minutes.

Sokoudoju should find a new fight camp and work on his conditioning and takedown defense. He should go pay a visit to Greg Jackson.

MMA math is right 9 times out 10 (like the bit of math there? :P )
According to my “math”-based rankings, Musasi, Sobral, Cane, Sokoudjou and Lil Nog are the LHWs ranked 21-25, in that order.
For all the hype, Musasi’s greatest win is over Sobral. Sobral’s greatest win (in the last 3 years or so) is over Sokoudjou, and ditto for the WAY overhyped Cane: the biggest achievement of his life is submitting Sokoudjou. As for Lil Nog, he has never beaten a ranked LHW since Henderson and that was nearly 5 years ago. And he was crushed by Sokoudjou. Ranking anywhere but below Sokoudjou is a travesty.
Seen in that light, the upcoming match-ups are very reasonable. A win over Musasi would push Sokoudjou a couple of notches up the rankings. Beating Nogueira, Arona and Musasi is respectable, but still not Top 20 material. A win for Musasi has no impact on (logical) rankings, although I’m sure the subjectives rankers will hype him into the Top 5 or something silly.
Similarly for Nog-Cane. A win for Nog inches him up a couple of notches. A win for Cane leaves both fighters firmly hanging right outside the LHW Top 20.

me too lol I would really like to know who the 20 fighters are that are better than Mousasi, Sokoudjou, Sobral, Cane and little Nog. More importantlt I think the UFC would like to know. They’d probably pay you for the information considering they could do with them in the LHW division.
