Report: Brock Lesnar Will NOT Fight Shane Carwin at UFC 108

Heavy.com reports:

Sources close to Brock Lesnar's camp informed Heavy.com tonight that Lesnar will not be able to participate in the postponed main event of UFC 108 against Shane Carwin.

Lesnar has battled an undisclosed illness for the past month that forced him to withdraw from a scheduled title defense against Carwin at UFC 106. The bout was rescheduled for UFC 108, but Heavy.com learned earlier this week that Lesnar has not recovered from the illness and cannot train at even a moderate page without quickly becoming exhausted.

A source close to the UFC confirmed the story while pointing out that Lesnar was never officially part of the UFC 108 card.

Word is, Lesnar has mononucleosis, not H1N1.

The question in my mind is whether or not the just-announced Cain Velasquez vs Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira fight will be for an interim title.

The other thought is, what a drag for Shane Carwin.

mono is a lot more serious than the flu

the flu might kill more people, but you recover quite quickly. Mono can debilitate someone for months.

I've had mono TWICE

It really, really is hard to do any physical activity when you have it. It just drains you so badly

You're kidding, right?

Mono leads to swelling of the spleen. One good shot, and it bursts, and you could be dead before you get to the ER from internal bleeding.

I had a state-qualifying wrestler on my HS team that mono put in the hospital. And he didn’t get cleared for almost 6 weeks until the spleen swelling went down. NO physical contact at all. Mono’s no joke for anyone in a contact sport.

If you were being sarcastic, sorry for missing it.

I had mono for a whole school year. The doctor forgot to inform me that the liver does the healing and drinking prolongs the mono. Hence having it a whole school year.

Your age is a

big factor in regards to the seriousness and the length of the time you are sick. It’s similar to Chicken Pox in that the older you are when first exposed, the more dangerous it is.

Are they gonna give him another fight? Dos Santos?

Also, the other thing I’m thinking is maybe this is a little bit more serious than the flu for Lesnar…

Yeah, it’s unfortunate but this kinda stuff happens. Now what? Does he sit out and wait for Brock (while perhaps not fighting for almost a year) or does he accept a fight and risk losing his title shot? I like Scott’s suggestion of Buentello, Carwin isn’t exactly a spring chicken and not fighting for a year isn’t gonna help him, I say take a fight against a non top-10 guy in the interim and just make sure he doesn’t lose.

by ufc4 on Nov 4, 2009 9:11 PM EST via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah I was just reading about Buentello and thought that

Also, I forgot about JDS/Gonzaga. I just think you can’t put Carwin on the shelf for that long, and I presume he’d rather fight than continue waiting, I mean he has to be burning through cash for his training camp, not to mention just the ardousness of preparing for a fight.

by Robert Downey Sr. on Nov 4, 2009 9:16 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Well I don’t think the money is a huge deal, he has a pretty good job outside of fighting, but sitting out for almost a year and then fighting Brock doesn’t seem like the best idea.

by ufc4 on Nov 4, 2009 9:30 PM EST via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

He has a fair job, yes

Being an engineer is no joke, but my old man is a chemist and he wouldn’t be living comfortably if he had to go through a fight camp with some of the best MMA fighters in the world in preparation for a title fight.

Will Carwin be in a Pat Barry situation? Probably not, but he wouldn’t like paying for all that shit if he isn’t expecting to get a payday soon.

Shane Carwin is not going to take a fight with someone else because he’s afraid he’ll lose, and not get to fight for the belt.

Nogeuira, or Dos Santos would finish him, and he knows it. He probably just wants to be able to say he fought for the belt.

Carwin vs. Nog seems like the most logical #1 contenders match to me. That said, unless it’s going to be some massive layoff, I tend to agree with Brent about interim titles.

If they need to create some drama and kill time between now and when Brock is healthy, a HW mini-tournament would be awesome.

They won’t do an interim title, it makes no sense, Lesnar will fight by March.

The only one I could see them doing an interim title for is 205 with Shogun in a main event for this show, especially considering the disputed nature of Machida’s current status.

Shane's happy to wait and train more

I have an aquaintence who is one of Shane’s training partners in Denver and he told me Shane really wasn’t all that upset the bout with Lesnar was moved back. Shane did have 3-4 days in the past few weeks when an illness limited his training, but not really a big deal, his training camp was on schedule for a Nov 21 bout. From what I heard he enjoys training with his team and feels he gets better every day he has to train with them so an extra 2, 3, even 4 months if that is what it takes is no problem, he’ll be that much better when the bout occurs. And between the team in Denver and the extended Team Jackson, its difficult to argue with that logic.

I’ve had mono and it can completely shut you down. When I first went to my doctor and they drew less than a 1/2 pint of blood for testing I was dizzy walking to my car. I lost 20 lbs in 2 weeks. All I could do was eat a couple popsicles a day and watch bad tv. If mono is what Lesnar is suffering from it will probably take 2-6 weeks for him to get back into the shape he was in before the illness struck, plus an 8 week training camp. And that 10-14 week period can’t start until the mono runs its course.

This could be awhile, but I think Carwn has the mental game to not make the wait an issue for him and quite frankly due to the physical toll mono extracts I would say Carwin’s odds just got better. Shane strikes me as one of the most mature fighters in the UFC so waiting shouldn’t drive him nuts. Its not working out too bad for big Shane.

Bring the interim title

I think Vel Nog should be for the title baby. Lesnar may or may not be back in 3 months. Let’s just make things interesting. Shane sitting out a few more months? He is not getting any younger. But I guess he wants to make himself famous by knocking Lesnar out.

Strikeforce Danger

If we don’t have some action in the heavyweight division, UFC risks looking like Strikeforce. It is funny how when I had Mono, I just went on a making out binge in high school in hopes that all the girls would get sick and have to stay home from school.

I think the Nog Cain fight would be an EXCELLENT fight. Nog is better on the ground than Cain is a wrestler and Cain can’t knock his momma out.

As for Carwin, I hope he fights Brett Rogers after he loses.

tough luck for carwin

but he was kinda handed the title shot in the 1rst place (i thought nog deserved it, after beating handy). he was supposed to fight cain 1rst, so either he can wait a little longer or fight beuntello or somebody else in-between. can’t stand the thought of another “interim” title idea, and i don’t see it happening. the last one was basically b/c of randy’s year long hiatus, not knowing for sure if he was going to come back or retire. this is a much different scenario. someone has to beat brock to be the ufc champ imo. not too woried about the co/main being a 3rounder, there are plenty of great fights still on this card. if gsp comes back by feb, they can pair him and brock together for ppv gold.

Brock does have mono as stated by Dana White..

At this point in time they are not definite on what to do with Carwin.. Brock wont be able to resume training until sometime in Dec.. It’s more realistic we’ll see Lesnar defend the title in Feb at the earliest.. More than likely the March card..

there is a couple things they can do. the one that makes the most sense is to do another tournament. nog vs. cain would be phenominal, but why not line up the mir and nog rematch and book carwin v. cain. obviously the only problem would be shane would be giving up his title shot.

me too

i like your idea, i think they only gave carwin the title shot anyway was b/c they didn’t think nog could beat randy, or else i think they might have set up nog/brock 1rst. thats their biggest money fight right now at hw, but since brock is sick, it makes sense as a promoter to do as you suggested. of course we know they wont.

and kongo can fight beuntello. never knew why the had mir/kongo anyway.

by bdw on Nov 5, 2009 1:22 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

They gave Carwin a title shot because Brock fighting anyone is a lock for PPV buys. I totally forgot that Mir is fighting Kongo, that is really sad. They really should find Shane a fight, for no other reason than to boost his popularity.

Illness

Earlier I stated that I doubted it was H1N1. Now it’s mono. Mono can take you down for awhile and about 10% of those infected get swelling of the spleen, in which case as stated above, contact sports and weight lifting would be out of the question. It predominates in teenagers, frequently passing from oral to oral contact, but like any other virus it can be passed from hand to hand contact, but a whole lot less likely to be transmitted in this manner. It’s possible, but given Brock’s age, level of physical conditioning and married status, I’m thinking something else is going on. Even though I know some of us don’t like boxing, I’m hoping to see some MMA fans tonight at Fight NIght in D.C. Look for me ringside in the black suit.

I found out I had mono back in mid SEPT. My doctor told me no boxing for minimum 6 months – doc said spleen gets enlarged from the virus and has high risk of erupting…I think brock will be out for a while – he will be wiped out for a while and then has the long process of getting back into shape…which makes me wonder how skinny he will look in the next couple months
