Is it only my intense dislike for Mir that is making Kongo seem like a good bet?
by WanderleiNoooooo! on Nov 30, 2009 3:27 PM EST reply actions
Nah.
The longer Mir stays standing the more likely it is we see him KO’d, and I’m not really sold on him having the stand-up to stay competitive on the feet or the wrestling to get Kongo to the ground. That being said, I could easily see Kongo rocking Mir, rushing into his guard to finish him, and then getting arm-barred.
Should be interesting to watch.
Without pain, without sacrifice, we would have nothing.

Except he did end Pete Williams’ career if I remember correctly. Mir does have a tendency to crank submissions particularly hard when he grabs hold of them, so I wouldn’t doubt he could end a career.

"You talk to much, You've got to be careful."
The man that says the least, is the man that you have to worry about. I have a feeling that Cheick might surprise some people this time.
On a side note, what’’s with Frank Mir’s obsession with ending career’s now? That’s not kosher dude. He of all people shouldn’t be saying that, especially with his past.

Kongo has a very good chance of winning this actually, and he needs a win over someone like a Frank Mir because Kongo’s best win so far has been against CroCop. Mir doesn’t take too well to getting hit also, so there is always that mental game with Mir that seems to affect him while Kongo can get pounded on the ground for three rounds (see Velasquez vs Kongo) and still be in the fight. If the fight stays standing, it will be all Kongo, but if it goes to the ground, then it will be all Mir. I am going with Frank Mir on this one, but wouldn’t be surprised to see Kongo take this.
I wanna say one thing

Diego is approaching Ultimate Warrior promo status
Giving Shogun his props. I had the fight 48-47 Machida but Shogun put up a monumental performance and I am honored to have seen it in person.

As long as BJ is training with that psychotic russian, I'm not betting against him.

Man, I’m so sick of hearing Mir talking this crap about ending people’s(!) career. I hope Kongo will send him to strawberry fields …forever…

I"M SO FUCKING EXCITED FOR BJ DIEGO THAT I HAVE TO TYPE MY SHIT IN ALL CAPS
and i’m serious. the first thing i wanted to come home to do after work today was watch that promotional video. I CANNOT WAIT.
Diego’s fought incredible fighters of all different strength sets and disciplines and only lost twice, via decision both times. Never submitted, never KOed, which is a bit disparaging because you know theres always a first. But he has also upped his JJ game with xaulo, and Penn isn’t one to usually press the fight to the ground. However, Diego doesn’t have true KO power. He hits hard, but has not had a true KO stoppage. Penn has an iron chin, and most definately will not be submitted.
Knowing all this, Diego’s best avenue is to keep the fight standing and pressing the action, and take three rounds in route to a decision. If BJ is at the top of his game, i see him taking it by submission in later rounds like he has done or dropping Diego a few times with bombs.
If you guys can’t tell, i’m pretty excited for this fight. a tad.

Diego Sanchez is never, ever, in a boring fight.
Didn’t Dana say that about Huerta and then he fought Kenny “I want t BJ’s belt” Florian? Way to jinx it , Dana.

I loved after one of his first fights in the UFC
he was doing the in-ring interview with Rogan, and he said something along the lines of “I’m here for the title. Just give me the belt,” and made the strap gesture around his waist. I’ve been a fan ever since.

Rejoice! The mma gods are favoring us with with a main card guarenteed to deliver the hardest core technical grappling as well as the possibility of at least 2 KO’s.
You can’t get any better than Penn/Sanchez for wall to wall action. I hope Diego has been spending a lot of time at 10th planet. Obviously RNC is his most likely cause for defeat should it come. I think diego will outpoint BJ on the feet so this might up being another interesting decision.
