The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale Preview: Jon Jones Talks Wrestling Mismatch Against Matt Hamill

"I have so much respect for the guy for what Matt Hamill's done, but people think I’m going to get taken down repeatedly," "That’s just not gonna happen.
... "I think it’s so unfair that people are calling him this world-class wrestler and all this. Matt had a great collegiate career, but it was so long ago. If you were a great wrestler, unless you’re all about wrestling every day, and still training at that level, you lose a lot of it. And for people to say that Matt’s just gonna take me down, hold me down, ground and pound me and beat me that way, it’s just ridiculous. I can’t wait to show the people that I’m a fresh wrestler out of college. Matt’s college career was like ten years ago. This time last year I was warming up for tournaments. I’m a wrestling coach now at Ithaca College, I wrestle at Cornell University all summer long, so I think it’s funny that people are giving him that huge gap in the wrestling department, and I can’t wait to make Matt prove that he’s a better wrestler than me."
... "I’m gonna continue to be a grinder and continue to work hard, improve, and keep my head on straight. I’m not resting until I’m officially Anderson Silva status."

Apparently thats the thing to do once you reach that status.
I dislike Matt Hughes. Shogun beat him like a dirty horse.

It should be like a badge, maximum five in the world, and you have to kill one of the badge-holders to take their place.

Jon Jones has a point. If you dont use it, you lose it. He is actively involved in wrestling and wrestles his brothers who were legitimate D1 HW prospects. Coaching can be a huge help in learning about a sport as you get to see it from the outside looking in and you learn a lot more. That being said, I hope he is good enough to get back to his feet. Maybe throw a Jose Aldo type knee when Hamill shoots. A ‘hold him down for three rounds’ fight would be the cherry on top of this super exciting season of TUF.
Hamill hasn't even been utilizing his wrestling lately
Hamill could prove me wrong here like Koscheck did against Johnson, and actually use his wrestling instead of falling in love with standup. I see Jones taking this though with him being in Greg Jackson’s camp, his unorthodox fighting style, and his constant improvement every fight.

I think this is a great criticism of the Franklin fight, and Hamill has admitted as much. Mark Munoz and Reece Andy were both pretty decorated wrestlers with rather limited standup, so it’s hard to fault him for not forcing it to the ground. It will be interesting to see if he really was just in love with his standup or if he will revert to wrestling when facing someone who is a better striker than he is.
Jones can talk all he wants but Hamill ain’t hearing any of it.

Who are these people saying Hamill is going to take down Jones and lay on him?
When was the last time Hamill took down anyone and laid on them? The last one I can recall is versus Seth Petruzelli back in 2006. Since then, Hamill has evolved into a guy who uses his wrestling in reverse, too keep fights standing and control his opponents in his goofy but effective one-handed clinch while smashing them with his other hand.
Jones is right that Hamill won’t take him down … but that is mostly because Hamill won’t even try to take him down. He’s going to try and make it a clinch war while Jones is going to try and create space so he can throw his funky strikes. Whoever controls the distance wins the fight. My money will be on Bones. I think Jones can handle Hamill’s clinch a lot better than Hamill can handle Jones striking from distance, and I also think Jones has the Greco skills to avoid getting stuck in the clinch when he doesn’t want to be there.
He took down and laid on Bisping repeatedly in 2007. I wonder if Jones is good and crazy enough to put Hamill on his back? It would be interesting to see if Hamill can fight off his back.

Its going to be a bad night for Hamill if the only way he can win is by dirty boxing in the clinch. Jones has really good throws from the clinch and his Muay thai is much more dynamic than Hamils funky striking.

Jonny Bones sure talks a mean game, but what exactly does he know about Hamill’s training?

I cannot wait to see how much he has developed at Jackson’s, The difference in Joe Daddy was immediately visible, and Bones has been spending time with GSP too…
