Todd Duffee out of his fight at 107
This according to sherdog:
Todd Duffee has pulled out of his heavyweight bout against Paul Buentello at UFC 107 on Dec. 12 in Memphis, Tenn., due to an injury.
“(Withdrawing) was one of the hardest decisions I’ve had to make,” said Duffee, who would not disclose the nature of his injury.
Duffee, 23, burst onto the UFC scene with a record-setting seven-second knockout of Tim Hague at UFC 102 in August. The undefeated heavyweight, who recently relocated to Las Vegas to attend the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, hopes to be back in action by early 2010.
“It was a fight I was really looking forward to,” Buentello told Sherdog.com on Tuesday. “We really matched up well.”
Mike Russow and Stefan Struve have been presented as two potential replacements for Duffee, said Buentello.
This is too bad for both the UFC and Duffee. After his 7 second knockout, a matchup with Buentello seemed like a great way for the UFC to showcase Duffee against a true veteran fighter. Hopefully he heals fast from whatever is preventing him from fighting.

I don't think
the UFC wants to spoil a prospect like Duffee or risk JDS’s rising star power. They’ll probably give Duffee someone like Herring

Herring is retired and moving on to acting i think he missed his shot at the “fast track” and he’ll now get somebody like Tuchscherer and smash him…
Herring is retired?
When did this happen? I know that he’s off doing acting for the time being, but did he really hang up the gloves?

“I’ve been doing this for so long, 13 years, and having to pull out of that fight, I just need to get my head cleared and get everything set back up the way it needs to go before I jump in and do something stupid.” – Herring
Statement was nearly 5 months ago. Haven’t heard anything from him since that point, but I’m sure he will be back in the octagon again.

I’m all for that, but it doesn’t make a lot of sense to eliminate either Duffee or dos Santos from title contention. Both guys are on the rise and don’t necessarily need to cross paths, at least not yet.
But it would be one hell of a match.

Agreed...
Someone like Duffee who could become a monster in the HW division doesnt need to be matched up against Dos Santos in his second UFC matchup. Maybe someone coming of TUF, like a Scott Junk or Shivers, which will get him alittle more publicity, but not be to tough of a test
I guess I understand why you guys would say that the UFC should not have two HW contenders fight at this point due to the density of contenders in the division. The way I think things make most sense it to just have the contenders fight each other to find out who (currently) is the number 1 contender. This whole matter of setting up fights to “showcase” or “build up” a fighter is completely deficient to determining which contender has earned the title shot most. Buentello vs Duffee….. when I first saw that fight I was like. Okay? Duffee is a up and comer who looks to have immense potential, why on earth is he facing Buentello who is trying to make it back to the top? In my opinion if Buentello had lost this would have done nothing for him, but had Duffee won all it would have done it “build up” Duffee to those casual fans and get him “publicity”. I don’t know about many people here but I hate fights that have no relevance to the title and are not in any way more exciting than any other fight. This would have been a dumb fight IMO I would Much much rather see Duffee fight Dos Santos. Does any body here think that a loss to Dos Santos by Duffee would really set him back? I for one don’t. It would be very early in his UFC career and its not the first time two contenders should fight. Re; Marquardt/Hendo
I have to say that the Buentello/Duffee fight was immensely unmatched. Its more than obvious the UFC set that much up in hopes that Duffee won so that he could be considered an up and coming contender the same way Velasques has been treated with fights by the UFC. The way Overeem beat up Buentello about 3 years ago (Out side of the UFC mind you) is a clear reason why Buentello would have been the underdog. He is 27/10. Is a veteran (Some would say old). In my mind this was Duffee’s fight to win and the UFC knew that given they acknowledge Duffee has showcased more potential than say a Stefan Struve. (from another thread)
I bet they were hoping that Buentello was going to be finished by Duffee the same way that AA finished him. Quick and Painful.
