BloodyElbow.com Gets a Redesign
As you may have noticed, things look a tad bit different around here this morning.
SBNation is constantly evolving and innovating to bring you - the sports fan and in our case, the MMA enthusiast - the best online experience possible. Part and parcel of that effort is creating the optimal design and layout for all of the SBNation blogs. All of us here at BloodyElbow.com are hugely supportive of SBNation and their tireless attempts to make our site and the rest of the SBNation family the top destination for sports fans looking to learn, share and communicate with one another.
So let us know what you think. If you have any feedback about the layout, please leave it in the comments. And let us know if detect any bugs or problems with the layout, but make sure to mention what kind of browser you're using, what version it is and so on.
And, of course, thank you for visiting BloodyElbow.com and supporting the SBNation.

agreed sometimes it overlaps into the bloodyelbow logo in the top left. Also liked the dark background on the left and right if the foreground is going to stay the same. It all looks muted vs looking clean and professional, which seems to be what they were going for with this color theme.
by YoungGun on Nov 3, 2009 1:44 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
It looks cluttered if you ask me. No borders makes it look like everything is thrown together. I liked having the colors, it worked well for the team sites. Left justifying the titles is a little weird.

IMO it looks like a rookie blogger on some generic blog site using the default template. I know SBN want to become more of a news source and the all white is sort of a news paper look. but I liked it before.

I’m using firefox and the picture that says Bloody Elbow in the top left of the page is not lining up right, it is covering up the page. Right now it’s sitting on top of the article so I can’t read the whole headline, and on the frontpage it’s covering up most of the “sections,” I can only see “technique”
The facebook share thing at the bottom of the page is also partially covering up the “add comment” link.
The site looks weird at first but I’m sure I’ll get used to it, if you need/want screenshots of what I’m seeing I can do that.
by Phildo on Nov 3, 2009 10:19 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
I just looked at it on IE and I’m guessing the problem with that picture is because I use adblock and it’s blocking the banner at the top of the page, and it’s across all of sbnation. Maybe a fix would be making the box at the top of the page that says “Pound-for-Pound the Best in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Commentary, News and Community” box bigger so that it will be the same size whether or not the individual browsers load the banner.
And the share on facebook link is not in the right place because I’m blocking the “retweet” link from popping up somehow. But there should be some sort of way to move it over.
Also, the spacing on the comments looks a little bit too crunched together. Before there was more space between the subject of a comment, the comment, and the bottom line that lists who wrote it and when, I think putting that space back would make things easier to read and look a little better.
by Phildo on Nov 3, 2009 10:29 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
The retweet thing is from “backtype.com.” Allowing that doesn’t seem to cause that much other annoyance on the page, so if anyone else is having that problem, that’s how to fix it.

I’m getting the same thing. I assume it because I am using Firefox with the NoScript and AdBlock add-ons.
by Steve4192 on Nov 3, 2009 11:02 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Just an FYI, but appears that the NoScript add on was the problem, not AdBlock. I just turned off NoScript and everything seems to be lining up fine now.
Problem is, that makes me more worried, not less. I generally frown upon web sites bombarding my computer with scripts running in the background. That’s generally how your hardrive gets littered with adware, spyware, and trackers. Blocking them was the primary reason I switched to Firefox.

Much cleaner without all that background noise.
by dv8shun on Nov 3, 2009 11:10 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Not an actual layout problem, but if I’m being a critic here there is lots of whitespace on the right at the bottom of a long comments section, and on both sides of the page at the bottom of the front page. I believe that before the side bars did not have a white background (or they were at least shaded). Maybe adding some shading or some colors to the sidebars would make it look better.

by J_Maddux on Nov 3, 2009 12:04 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
It’s not bad, though it reminds me of the super old look of Bloody Elbow a few years back (before you guys got gobbled up by SB Nation).
But in any case, I usually grab the articles from my reader and don’t visit the site unless I need to comment anyway(which has been rare lately), so s’all good.
by Gong on Nov 3, 2009 12:08 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I like the font (some of us are old people) but man there is a crazy amount of wasted space (probably a side effect of the font change). There appears to be alot of white space between posts, so much so that it’s distracting.
by pr0cs on Nov 3, 2009 12:30 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Speaking as a web programmer
I definitely think it looks less professional than the previous design. Individual sections don’t visually pop as much as they used to, so the open layout with all same colored background and text can be a bit visually confusing at times. That’s compounded by the fact that there are a couple minor formatting problems in Firefox causing things to not appear where they should be.
Plus, I don’t know if this is just coincidence, but I encountered a scripting error the first time I tried to load the site today which caused the page to time out, which I believe was caused by an advertiser script.

The site loads perfectly fine on Safari 4.
I kind of like the new font, the only problem I think that needs to be addressed is filling in the gaps of white space.

Most of the people have already said most of the stuff already, but I'm gonna say that I also don't like it that much.
-on the text, the align left and new font of the titles look okay on the actual page/link of the post itself, but not so much in the front page.
-All the sites look the same. The link colors and header are the only ones different. The past look kinda makes Bloodyelbow different from BLH, and WKR and M4R etc. etc and it adds more personality to the site.
now, all the sites look like a less professional version SBNation.com.
-also, like most of the people said.. too much white, and the borders are hardly seen.
(i don’t mean to sound harsh or mean, because SBN obviously does a ton of great work and they’re really dedicated to this, but i just wanted to give some constructive criticism on it.)
by Anton Tabuena on Nov 3, 2009 3:16 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
also,
since the header buttons are now smaller, and the logo is still the same size, it isn’t aligned anymore, making it look kinda off..
If they’re sticking with the small header, maybe a smaller logo too so it would be aligned at least? (like how it looks in the links of the actual posts)
by Anton Tabuena on Nov 3, 2009 3:28 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I use Google Chrome 3.0
… and I think it is so-so. I wish borders still separated the posts, and I wish the headlines were still bold and centered. I also liked the darker borders on the sides. The font itself I like more, and I am very glad that you guys finally got a browser logo to go next to your site name in a tab. All-in-All, I give it a 7.0 out of 10, since I am sure it will grow on me.

Header text isn't heavy enough.

I don’t like the new design. On my computer, it’s screwed up. Posts show up on both the left and right side (2 different stories at once) and are crammed in and it looks completely unprofessional/ridiculous. It also causes the fanposts to be at the very bottom of the screen, scrolling down past the additional stories.
I remember when Fiveouncesofpain.com switched to their new layout, that caused me to stop going to that website and change to here, but they also stopped making as many posts.
by Swordslasher on Nov 3, 2009 7:33 PM EST reply actions 0 recs

I like the faint borders. It cleans things up. However, its still pretty baron at the bottom of the pages.

by ryanwk628 on Nov 3, 2009 7:43 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
It's kind of bland
It’s odd. The new icon is a red star which suggests power, yet the new design is so sanitized looking that it seems more fitting for a health site than an MMA site.
Just my opinion, but it lacks the “oomph” that the old design had. It isn’t bad, its kind of nice actually – it just doesn’t seem to fit.
