The Week in Quotes: November 22nd - 28th
I TRIED TO CAPTURE THE SPIRIT OF THE THING
"Kim was interviewed post 'sparring' with Wand Silva saying, 'Silva had to turn it UP, when I turned it up.'" - Erin Toughill, none too pleased with a certain soon-to-be-ex-memeber of Familia Couture. (The Underground)
"She has said, 'It's really hard for Randy to pass my rubber guard.'" - Toughill
"She had some lip augmentation done. Girls asked how'd it affect her fight? Kim said, 'It would not. I dont get hit in sparring or when I fight. I have a 'black style' when it comes to boxing.'" - Toughill. I guess she must have a "white style" when it comes to MMA?
YOU DO THAT, YOU GO TO THE BOX, YOU KNOW. TWO MINUTES, BY YOURSELF, YOU KNOW, AND YOU FEEL SHAME, YOU KNOW. AND THEN YOU GET FREE.
"The long-term goal for me and my own satisfaction is to take off Brock Lesnar's arm." - Former UFC heavyweight champ and eternal optimist Frank Mir, diversifying his life goals. (MMA Junkie)
"Not that he was, obviously, my next opponent, but to face him again was the long-term goal – the short-term goals being obviously Cheick and whoever else." - Mir
"If Brock Lesnar is unable to enter the cage again, that's going to give me a hard time. That's been pretty much my drive and focus to go to the gym every day, to change myself and grow as a fighter, is the opportunity to have a rematch with him." - Mir. Battered wife syndrome?
I'M TIRED OF IT! PUKE! BLAH! ALL THE TIME, PUKE!
"I don't even know what's going on, I had to turn it off." - Mir, on the fights during the heavyweight season of TUF. (MMA Weekly)
"I haven't seen any fights in the WEC that could ever amount to being that bad, because the lighter guys are just more competitive. They're in shape, they're more strategic." - Mir. I've found the first case of a reverse-Napoleon Complex.
OLD TIME HOCKEY! LIKE EDDIE SHORE!
"Dana enjoyed the fight so much, but to be honest, one of the things that made me happier was to see my brother proud." - Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, following his first round KO of up-and-comer Luis Cane at UFC 106. (InTheGuard.tv)
"Sometimes, in middle of the confusion of interviews, the crowd celebrating, I looked at him and saw the pride on his face. It was very good to see." - Nogueira. Certainly better than seeing his brother trapped under a truck a few decades ago.
BLEED ALL OVER 'EM. LET 'EM KNOW YOU'RE THERE.
"So the doctor says, 'This guy's been at 60% of his potential.'" - UFC President Dana White, on Brock Lesnar's intestinal infection that has plagued Lesnar for the past year. (MMA Torch)
"How much faster can you beat people? How good? There's a lot of questions out there right now and hopefully we can get through this thing." - White, who will be matching Lesnar up with subpar opposition until he finagles a deal with a certain Russian.
PARTING SHOTS
"I’m sorry I ran out on you, it was no disrespect. I just wanted it to be a great fight and I was really disappointed when it wasn’t." - Former UFC light heavyweight champ Forrest Griffin, overheard talking to Anderson Silva hurriedly at UFC 106 before continuing his run out of the arena. (Las Vegas Sun)
"It's probably a good thing. I was having a hard time getting motivated for my last two fights. I needed a change. The undercards just didn't do it for me." - Brock Larson, cut by the UFC after his second consecutive loss. I'm sure promoters love hearing about a guy who can't get motivated fighting in the UFC. (MMA Junkie)
"I called and I asked him for Renzo (Gracie) because he's coming and he needs a warm-up fight, so I was like I feel like I'd be a good warm-up fight." - Matt Brown, who will call out Luke Thomas if Renzo doesn't take the fight. (MMA Weekly)
"I just want to fight the top fighters in whatever division I’m in." - Former UFC middleweight champ Rich Franklin, preparing to fight in the new 193.5 pound division. (National Post)

I think Kim Couture’s style is more of a “red style”- as in the color of the blood dripping from her face.

How much faster can you beat people than in the second round, Dana?

One would think
Dana should pay more attention to Carwin if he thinks Lesnar has been beating people fast.

…when Carwin generates the kind of money that Brock does I’m sure he will be out there talking about how quickly he gets it done

i really liked seeing
how much that win meant to the Nogs; you could see how happy they both were… something i think they were working towards for a long time.
It's funny how most fighters are hating this season of TUF
I mean it just has been horrible
And yet I cannot stop watching
But yeah, it is pretty bad to the point where seeing two fighters utterly gassed and trying to fight becomes funny.
But it haz KIMBO!
Just saw a commercial for the TUF finale. Yup, you guessed it., 90% Kimbo, 10% ‘some other guys’.

the Nog quote made my day
After the story about Semmy’s 22 year old training partner and the War Machine thing..
It was nice.

I don't get that Kim Couture quote
Is she making some weird racial reference, like black people have much better head movement or something? Is it an Ali reference? Is it the most retarded thing I have ever heard?
Well…it’s one of those boxing things. Like…a few (dumber) people blew up on me here a while back for “being racist” when I said that I think Miguel Torres will always have trouble with certain fighters because he has a very mexican style. it’s a legitimate thing in the boxing world. The “Mexican style” is very much one where you allow yourself to get hit a lot and you end up in a lot of “wars” because of that style. It’s not a race thing so much as a stylistic trait. For example…Shane Mosley fights “like a Mexican”
At the same time there is a “black style” of elusive defense. Pernell Whitaker, Roy Jones Jr., Floyd Mayweather…etc were guys whose entire style was based on defense and landing while not being hit.
I don’t really think it’s that dumb for her to say…except for the part where she gets hit in the face way too much for it to be true.

Thanks for the response
That actually makes a lot of sense. Its a cultural thing. Kind of the same way international soccer teams have a certain type of play.

so it really IS a race label?
The path to my fixed purpose is laid with iron rails, whereon my soul is grooved to run. Towards thee I roll, thou all-destroying but unconquering BROCKLESNAR; to the last I grapple with thee.
Yes and no...
you don’t have to BE that race to fight in the style that people associate with it. As I said with Mosley fighting “like a mexican” Oscar de la Hoya did NOT fight like a mexican really (which is why many of the hardcore Mexican boxing fans didn’t care for him most of his career). Hatton = kind of fights with that mexican style (“I always attack and throw plenty of punches. I’m a body puncher, and I don’t think I fight like the traditional British fighter—if anything, I fight more like a Mexican or American fighter.”) Hell…Ricky wore a sombrero and pancho to the ring against Jose Castillo because people said he fought with more of the Mexican warrior spirit than Castillo. Pacquiao also gets talked about as “fighting like a Mexican” Freddie Roach explains: "They enjoy his style, Manny fights like a Mexican. A true Mexican warrior fights hard, digs deep and when they hurt somebody, they finish them off. That’s how Manny fights."
As I said, it’s more of a head first, offensive style which doesn’t emphasize a whole ton of defense.
Some people confuse this with racial stereotyping or whatever but it really isn’t. It’s simply that certain cultures embrace certain styles so often that is what a fighter is raised to box like. With the Mexican thing it’s just that a lot of the great Mexican fighters fought that way and the culture got behind that style…kids coming up were taught to emulate the greats…and so on.
The “black style” as I said is one more of elusiveness, defense and opportunistic offense. Kim was simply saying that she fights with that style of not getting hit. Which is, of course, profoundly false.

What? I often find Fagan’s snide comments after the quotes irritating, but that’s just plain offensive.

In france we say: “on peux rire de tout mais pas avec n’importe qui” →“you can joke about anything, but not with anybody”.

In Brazil we usually regard jokes about accidents that leave little kids hospitalized for a year as bad taste in humor. I don’t see how its funny to ruin a moment of fraternal love with that shocking reminder

was going to write something about this
"All I guarantee is violence" - Wand
I was out of town for the news about Larson being cut, so I went back and read the B.E. post about it and the ensuing comment thread. The whole thing was about his “the undercards weren’t doing it for me” remark. That was definitely a strange thing to say, but I think what’s getting lost there is another instance of the UFC’s cutting policy not being very consistent.
Larson was 3-3 in the UFC, 2-2 in his most recent stint. That’s not usually the kind of record that gets you cut, especially when you’re a fighter with a high finishing rate (we’re talking about a wrestler with 30 career fights and only two decision wins), one of those losses was to Jon Fitch, and the other was, by all accounts, a classic case of lay and pray
Other fighters have gotten popped for steroids, or lost more than two straight, and gotten far more lenient treatment. Can we all stop pretending there’s some kind of “three strikes and you’re out” rule with the UFC?
Brock Larson dropped 2 staright 2 guys he was favored against
Lets be honest how many of you had even heard of Mike Pierce before losing to Larson.
Then they gave him Brian Foster who was coming off a loss and he lost again.
Now I cant confirm this as 100% but I belive the only people that dont get cut after 2 straight losses are the guys that built this sport: Hughes, Wand, Liddell, Couture, Ortiz.
Outside of the big names, which Larson wasnt, you dont lose 2 straight and keep on with the UFC.As for the steroid thing I cant even think of a fighter they dropped for a positive steroid test.
something tells me that has to do with the fact that
he’s austrilian and they have an austrilian card coming up. Win or lose dont be suprised to see him dropped.
Now if Brock was from Canada or the UK or evn Austrilia chances are they would have given him more time but being american and losing 2 in a row doesnt help your cause
Hell I’m willing to bet that if they had plans to return to minnesota in the next 6 events he would have been kept around.
Now I cant confirm this as 100% but I belive the only people that dont get cut after 2 straight losses are the guys that built this sport: Hughes, Wand, Liddell, Couture, Ortiz.
Alessio Sakara. Pete Sell. Houston Alexander. Clay Guida. Josh Burkman. Antoni Hardonk. Nate Diaz. Joe Stevenson. Melvin Guillard. Diego Sanchez. And of course, Chris Leben.
As for the steroid thing I cant even think of a fighter they dropped for a positive steroid test.
That’s my point.

Oh right, good catch.
My contention wasn’t actually that no one has been dropped for a positive steroid test, but rather that several people have tested positive without getting dropped (Sherk, Franca, Marquardt, Leben).
I responded with “that’s my point” because what bigd said is indicative of how rare getting cut for steroids is.
I dont think Barnett was dropped for steroids
Yes they stripped him of the title and he was suspended but I think they dropped him when he refused to sit out the 6 months and went to Pride.
JRN Here is the point
While it is not consistent there are consitentcy’s about it. The UFC made clear that they would rather keep a guy who loses but is exciting than who loses by decision.
Now is it right that they cut Brock Larson? No but the reality is it all depends on how much a guy is liked. If they cut Griffin after back to back loses the outrage is bound to be more than cutting a Brock Larson.
Regardless of the UFC cutting policy, Brock should have performed better and he would not have been cut. Did you watch the Brian Foster fight? I was sitting there thinking to myself what the fuck happened to this guy.
He had two extremely underwhelming performances in a row. Then after the fact he stated that he wasn’t motivated cus he wasn’t on the main card.
It sounds like he forgot what his last name was. He deserved to be cut.
I dislike Matt Hughes. Shogun beat him like a dirty horse.

The UFC made clear that they would rather keep a guy who loses but is exciting than who loses by decision.
This is why I mentioned Larson’s high finishing rate. He’s finished 23 of 26 wins. 18 of those were in the first round, a group that includes his last two UFC wins (both of which were earlier this year). He also only has two decision losses. The guy is an exciting fighter. Apparently, it didn’t help him much.
The consistency you refer to seems to be that they don’t cut popular fighters. Yes, of course they don’t. But they also don’t necessarily cut fighters that perform poorly, or that the fans don’t care about.
It’s the UFC’s prerogative to do whatever they want with their roster. Larson being dropped just reminded me of this myth that the UFC has a consistent rule about fighter performance, closely allied with the myth that being in the UFC automatically means that a fighter is world class.
maybe he rufused a pay cut?
that is another thing that happens. Werdum refused a pay cut after going 2-2 so they cut his ass.
The also send guys to the minor leagues to retool and call it a "cut" all the time.
Usually those guys have their contract’s suspended and are told to go get some more time in a small promotion.
Kimbo still hasn’t lost in the ufc, Nelson fight was an exhibition. Think with kimbo, he’d have to lose like 3 or 4 straight to get cut, wanna make sure he’s completely unusable to the competition. I bet even with six straight losses sf or dream would stilltake him

Also Brock Larson isnt gonna be the first on an undercard or the last
Most other people who are, deal with it and fight their best and that is what will get you on the main card.
Brock Larson, wake up your 2 good 2 be fighting on the undercard. Well guess what GSP, Machida, and Aldo all have fought on the undercard but the difference is they took care of their business and won and got on the main card and kept taking care of their business and guess where they are now? Champions and considered the #1 fighter in their respective divisions.
Brock Larson is just trying to excuse the fact that he has looked like shit in his last 2 fights.
Awesome Slap Shot reference.

I know this is off topic but....
The Hoelzer Reich thread over on the Underground Forum caught my attention so I was checking out all their shirts on their website and on their myspace page to see what is going on with them. Anyway I don’t have an account on the Underground so I was wondering if someone could confirm something for me.
On Hoelzer Reich’s myspace page there is a T-Shirt with this phrase on it:
“das vierte reich hat begonnen”
Does that mean “The Fourth Reich has Begun”?
Sorry for getting off-topic with this.
Just BE.
Sorry to go off on another tangent here...
but did you guys see the ending to the Grey Cup? I understand the team is from Saskachewan so it kinda makes sense that they can;t count to 13 but most of the players and coaches aren’t even from Saskachewan. Does just living there for part of the year make you an idiot?
