Erin Toughill: "Kim Couture Has No Business Fighting Nor Taking Spotlight From Women Who Deserve to Fight"

Promoted to the front page from the FanPosts by Luke Thomas.

Erin-toughill_medium

Kim was NEVER training MMA before she met Randy. Even if I married Randy (being at the "level" I am now) it would NEVER make me a world class Greco Roman wrestler lmfao thru marriage.

Kim has gone on record numerous times saying she "built" the Couture name/brand & it was nothing b4 her. Kim was interviewed post "sparring" with Wand Silva saying, "Silva had to turn it UP, when I turned it up" lol believing that she was actually making Wand spar HARD. She has said "it's really hard for Randy to pass my rubber guard" lol believing that her "guard" can keep the ICON away. Kim had lunch w some ladies from the XC gym b4 her fight. She had some lip augmentation done. Girls askd howd it affect her fight? Kim said, "It would not. I dont get hit in sparring OR when I fight. I have a 'black style' when it comes to boxing". That is word for word and it blew me away lol Kim has "improved everywhere" and has taken 3 weeks off from training in a year...yet lookd like she has been training for 3 weeks, total.

There are SO many women fighters that feel the same way...I just dont have an issue saying it. She has no business fighting nor taking spotlight from women who deserve to fight & cant seem to get a contract, like Roxy, Young, Tate...2 name a few.

--Erin Toughill (10-2-1 MMA, 8-2-1 Boxing), had some harsh words for fellow Strikeforce fighter, Kim Couture after seeing her poor performance against Kerry Vera last week. It probably also has a lot to do with Kim's salary being more than double of anyone's on the Challengers card.

While I agree with her sentiments I wonder how many people would defend or attack her if she was directing her comments towards Kimbo?

by John Nash on Nov 28, 2009 2:34 AM EST via mobile reply actions

I don’t know, lots of people hate on kimbo for his fame too… but to be fair, Kimbo doesn’t say the stuff Toughill quoted Kim off, seems like a really humble guy most of the time..

elite just used him, (and paid him handsomely of course).. but Kimbo shouldn’t be faulted for that.

by Anton Tabuena on Nov 28, 2009 3:29 AM EST up reply actions   1 recs

As a person I like Kimbo, and I won’t fault him for taking whatever he could get out of Elite, but almost all the same complaints that Toughill made could be said about Kimbo: he’s basically a poor fighter who get’s all the attention and paid a hell of a lot more than other fighter for nothing that has to do with his skills or accomplishments in the ring.

All 4 of those people get criticized all the time, the difference here is that Kim really hasn’t shown anything at all yet. Brock’s got a world title, Kimbo’s game does have a lot of holes in it but he also has his strong points and Overeem gets his flack not for his performances but because of his magical inflating body. What at all has Kim Couture shown in the cage? Was that win over Lina Kvokov anything that was supposed to impress anyone? There are a lot of very good women’s MMA fighters out there that can’t get a contract at all, that makes this a very different situation from men’s MMA.

I think that it is a bit over-exaggerated to compare Kimbo to Kim Couture

Here’s the thing with Kim Couture, besides us MMA fans who go on websites like this, who else REALLY knows who she is? Are people who don’t usually watch Strikeforce Challengers Series going to watch it because Kim Couture is on the card? I feel that people know who Randy Couture is, but I don’t believe that these same people know who Kim Couture is except for the MMA fans “in the know.”
The thing with Kimbo is that he authentically brought in ratings and is a proven ratings draw, but Kim Couture really hasn’t proven as a ratings draw. I understand trying to get fans through the Couture name, but I question if anyone really cares about Kim Couture even though her last name is Couture.

So you are saying this is about who Kim married? Because that is where 100% of Kim’s “fame” came from. I can’t imagine she would be jealous of someone elses failed marriage just because the woman got to keep the man’s last name afterwards. I’ve got a feeling this is more about Kim running her mouth and making money at fighting when so many top women’s MMA fighters can’t even get regular fights.

One word comes to mind after reading stuff like this

Delusional, Kim Couture is delusional. Couture wasn’t a second rate hacker name, she did nothing but ride the coat tails of Randy. As for her out working Wandy, I had to wipe tears from my eyes I was laughing so hard.

by proflex on Nov 28, 2009 11:04 AM EST reply actions

For those of you who don’t know, Erin Toughillis a trainer at Xtreme Couture and is also married to Neil Melanson (Xtreme Couture Jitz Coach). She knows first hand about Kim Couture’s training and is probably tired of Kim Couture running her mouth. There aren’t many women fighters who have any name recognition outside Carano and Cyborg. I don’t blame Toughill for speaking up, as for Kimbo at least he street fought his way to fame rather than marrying an established fighter and using it to jump start her career as a fighter. Kim Couture needs to quit fighting and remain a behind the scenes bean counter at Tapout Gym or whatever gym/corporation she gets exiled to.

by BrothaDarkness on Nov 28, 2009 11:40 AM EST reply actions

Yeah, if that’s all true then it’s a good thing that she’s talking about it. Makes Kim come off like a phoney and totally undeserving. I don’t blame her for being annoyed at her. It would be like watching the coach’s son get the starting quarterback job when he’s not the best quarterback on the team. As far as the story about Wand and the sparring go though, it’s hard to believe that she could even be so delusional, but I’ve seen it before. It’s sad to say the least.

by Dooda on Nov 28, 2009 12:09 PM EST reply actions

Kim Couture may suck, but she’s not “taking the spotlight” away from better fighters. Sure, she gets more acclaim than she deserves. But honestly, she probably gives more spotlight to women fighters, just because of who she is. Kimbo may have gotten way, way more attention than he deserved, but he almost gave it to other fighters too…

by TLow on Nov 28, 2009 2:26 PM EST reply actions

I don’t agree w/comparing Kimbo to “Sugar-free”. Kimbo made a name for himself on his own, along w/his homeboys. Kim married into her name and is milking it for all its worth. Not that I blame her necessarily, but it is not the same thing as what Kimbo did. There is nothing about her that would make her relevant as a prominent fighter except her last name. Maybe that is true for Kimbo as well, but at least he got fame on his own.

We should just call Kim 'Kimbo'.

Save ourselves having to differentiate.

http://www.vancouversun.com/mma

by Ozzz on Nov 28, 2009 3:54 PM EST up reply actions

I’m not really saying that what Kimbo and Couture have done is similar. I’m remarking on the ‘taking the spotlight" away bit. I’m not even say she’s ‘earned’ it in the way did. Kimbo did at least have three professional wins (although one lucky one), and you can’t fault the guy for making money from people who were willing to give it to him.

But looking at it, Kimbo was popular for reasons other than his fighting ability, which is somewhere south of James Thompson and Seth Petruzelli. I’m just saying he brought some of the spotlight with him, in his sense, and maybe Kim Couture is doing that too, albeit in a more limited way

by TLow on Nov 28, 2009 4:46 PM EST up reply actions

What little spotlight she is bringing to women’s MMA is more than taken out by the number of experienced and talented women’s MMA fighters who can’t even get decent contracts or tv fights at all. I mean it’s not like watching a Kim Couture fight is going to make women’s MMA more popular or bring back repeat viewers.

As far as the Kimbo comparison, there isn’t one. Kimbo earned his name himself with his own actions, would anyone even notice if Kim was fighting if she had gone back to her maiden name after Randy divorced her? 100% of Kim’s D level of fame comes from the fact that she was married to Randy Couture for a couple of years and she is milking that to get these fights and these paydays. It may be different if she was actually impressive in these fights but she just isn’t.

by who me on Nov 28, 2009 4:08 PM EST up reply actions

What little spotlight she is bringing to women’s MMA is more than taken out by the number of experienced and talented women’s MMA fighters who can’t even get decent contracts or tv fights at all.

Right, but do you think that if Kim Couture suddenly disappears from the scene, it’s going to help these women get contracts and TV fights? My point is I don’t think she’s doing other women fighters any harm. more attention on her means indirectly more attention on other fighters. More people probably know who Kerry Vera is right now- why? Because she beat up Randy Couture’s ex-wife!

by TLow on Nov 28, 2009 4:51 PM EST up reply actions

Well if people watch women’s MMA fights that are actually good then they may not walk away thinking women’s MMA is a joke and lets face it Kim’s fights just aren’t that good. The name value only gets people to tune in, if you don’t actually deliver a good fight then you are doing more harm than good by getting them to watch.

by who me on Nov 28, 2009 10:15 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with the theory, BUT

I don’t think it’s grounded in reality. Cyborg is a much better fighter, but more people would tune in for Carano’s next fight than Cyborgs. I’m not saying I agree with it, but it’s a truth.

"Why am I here? Why does my mind have wings? Why do blue midgets hit me with fish?!" - The Tick

by mythbuster on Nov 28, 2009 10:33 PM EST up reply actions

Well Carano is also a very good fighter too, that is the point here. Kim just isn’t a very good fighter or impressive in her fights. Ideally you want someone who can draw eyes to the fights and also actually put on a good fight too, drawing eyeballs and then stinking up the place is counter-productive. Gina draws eyes and puts on good fights even if she isn’t as good of a fighter as Cyborg is.

by who me on Nov 29, 2009 12:14 AM EST up reply actions

True, but....

Would names like Modaferri, Tate or even Toughill draw viewers to women’s MMA? Probably not.
Women’s MMA needs Couture to market itself. The Carano model of an established name with a pretty face has proved to be the driver of the female sport. Couture is doing the same by using her name for the same purpose.

by cyke on Nov 28, 2009 2:30 PM EST reply actions

Not sure why you need to 'draw viewers to MMA'...

…to qualify for a fight on an MMA card.

Just let them fight and the viewers will come as stars establish themselves.

Nobody’s saying we can’t have bantamweight fights until a star can “draw people to MMA” so why do female fights need to?
