Quote of the Day: Frank Mir Says "Brock Lesnar's Sickness Has Thrown His Mind for a Spin"

"The long-term goal for me and my own satisfaction is to take off Brock Lesnar's arm," Mir said. "At the end of the day, that's what my goal is when I go to the gym and train. But being an interim champion would get me one step closer to doing so."

"[Lesnar's sickness] has thrown my mind for a spin," Mir said. "When you go in the gym, you've got a certain goal that you're going for and going for. Not that he was, obviously, my next opponent, but to face him again was the long-term goal – the short-term goals being obviously Cheick and whoever else. Now I've just got to turn it around that the interim would be another short-term goal."

"If Brock Lesnar is unable to enter the cage again, that's going to give me a hard time," Mir said. "That's been pretty much my drive and focus to go to the gym every day, to change myself and grow as a fighter, is the opportunity to have a rematch with him. To know that there's a slight possibility that that will never happen, that's going to take me [some time] to wrap my head around it."
-- Frank Mir talks about the path back to Brock Lesnar.

And now we now Mir is stupid.

oh wait…that’s old news.

by BNTHIS on Nov 30, 2009 3:26 PM EST up reply actions

Stupid Mir

Mir might want to rethink his “goal” especially if the reports are true that Lesnar was only operating at 60% because of the illness. The only limb Mir is tearing off is a drumstick on a turkey.

by NateDouble on Nov 27, 2009 9:36 PM EST reply actions   1 recs

Yeah good call. He should set his goals to something more appropriate, like maybe beating a non-beltholder. That would really be shooting for the stars.

And I don’t buy the whole %60 thing either. Was he not functioning as well as possible? Probably, but %60? C’mon. When he was in the cage adrenaline etc would more than make up for a lot of the inherent shortcomings with the immune system.

But I hear the whole %60 number a lot. “I started training with this new regimen and they told me I was only performing %60 of my capacity. Look out world” etc etc.

by Dooda on Nov 27, 2009 11:23 PM EST up reply actions

The basic gist is that his immune system was weakened and thus his ability to recover from exertion was not as great as it could be.

Basing your entire goal set on another human being is sad. To be disappointed that he can’t fight Lesnar if Lesnar never comes back is one thing. To make it seem like his whole world will come crashing down is just sad. Get over it Mir. You won one, he won one.

by NateDouble on Nov 28, 2009 8:51 AM EST up reply actions

Is it sad?

I think his motivation makes perfect sense being that it’s changed his entire outlook on the fight game. He honestly felt like his technique could overcome the overbearing physicality of a freak of nature, and was otherwise proven wrong in their second fight. I think acknowledging that is just telling the truth. Plus if you work hard to prove that you’re better than someone, it wouldn’t satisfy you to be the interim champ…

I’m flattered, but really, is what I said so polarizing, revolutionary, or novel that it sounds like I’m preaching the word? Don’t all of you find it a bit odd that he needs Brock to motivate him through tough workouts? In other words, without Brock there’s no reason for Frank Mir the fighter?

Are you serious?

You know that Frank’s been fighting for a while, right?

I would assume most fighters use the championship as motivation, or avenging a loss. The fact that you find this so objectionable that you need to “memo to…” to tell the former champion what his motivation should be is laughable.

People existed before The Lesnar. The world spun, clouds moved, people danced.

Using a loss as motivation is one thing. Frank’s comment was a bit more sensational. Essentially he’s saying I need Brock around to be motivated. I thought his comment was so over the top, it was worthy of a memo. I won’t cc: you on it when I’m done with it.

Being overrated is overrated.

by bobby g on Nov 28, 2009 9:18 PM EST up reply actions

Since it was sensational and so over the top, shouldn’t you or anyone else that is reading Mir’s comments just take it with a grain of salt or not so seriously. I mean, yes, it was sensational, but Mir makes it sound like he can’t get out of bed because of Lesnar. I honestly feel that Mir most likely meant what he said in a different context, and I have to wonder if he would say this if Lesnar wasn’t the Champion.

Mir's path to Lesnar

he has to beat Kongo . . . and look, Cheick is a good fighter. He’s big, powerful, and his stand-up can be vicious. If Mir wants Lesnar, he can’t look past Kongo. After that, I would say he would get the winner of Nog and Cain. Or maybe just Velasquez . . . if Nog is impressive enough in a win he just might get the title shot.

But Mir’s still in the picture no question, he just can’t become Captain Ahab chasing his white whale fruitlessly for the rest of his career.

1) I thought Henderson the Rain King was incredibly racist, reveling in “Noble Savage” stereotypes.
2) Hemmingway’s short stories are much better than his novels. His short, punchy style works better there.
3) Mockingbird is decent, but too pat & simple. Atticus Finch is cool, the rest is just OK.
4) I put The Sound and the Fury as #3, behind Moby Dick and Huck Finn. Amazing book.

i disagree about HTRK and think it did everything Updike’s Babbitt series should have done. Mockingbird is beautiful in its stark simplicity—and c’mon Boo Radley is awesome. Dont really care for any of the Nick Adams stories but The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber is definitely right there behind FWTBT. Have you ever read any version of The Bear? its prolly one of Faulkner’s best and most straightforward works

also, Moby Dick is an English novel, just like anything by Hawthorne. hell Id say Billy Budd is better

by Anthony Pace on Nov 29, 2009 1:08 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Moby-Dick is distinctly American. Note how it uses religion – very much Second Great Awakening, Revivalist-style, instead of the austere British Anglicanism. Also, thematically, British Lit at the time was all class-based – Dickens & Co. were in full bloom, very different from the apocalyptic Romanticism in M-D.

I need to read more Faulkner. I’ve read S&F and a few other short stories whose names I don’t even remember.

I’d say runners-up for GAN are The Great Gatsby, On the Road, and Gravity’s Rainbow. GG & OTR are very American, but too slight artistically to be Great Art. GR is just…odd. I love Pynchon, but his novels defy easy classification.

Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try Again. Fail again. Fail better. -Samuel Beckett

by themachiavellian on Nov 29, 2009 3:38 AM EST up reply actions

lol, i hopey you're still reading these replies since i don't wanna bring it up elsewhere

But see, I think the fact the Moby Dick is essentially a fusion of the British Romanticism and Gothic literary movements keeps it from being distinctly American (i know i’m venturing into dangerous waters here, since really everything is influenced by something else). Huck Finn, no doubt, can be included in this discussion; it offers the first deep look at the American vernacular heavily influenced by illiterate blacks, while also taking place on probably the most iconic location in America at the time (the Mississippi). And, it’s tremendously witty.

Gatsby is good, but too infatuated with a highly specific sect of American life. On the Road is personally one of my favorite novels, shit, I quote it all the time when I try to act cool, so I’d add that to the list. I lump GR in with Infinite Jest as books I know are awesome, but I just can’t appropriate 3 weeks to reading it right now. Of the 200 or so pages I’ve read, it is good. Fuck, Against the Day is staring at me in a pile of books right now.

But, I must say, the best English-language novel in general I’ve read thus far is Middlemarch.

We're just a million little gods causin' rain storms, turning every good thing to rust.

by Anthony Pace on Nov 29, 2009 9:13 PM EST up reply actions

I’ve got to agree with themachiavellian and say that Moby-Dick is quintessentially American being the most definitive example of American Romanticism I can think of (maybe Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter). For it’s modern companion (and perhaps the best American novel of the last three decades) read Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy. I’ll be honest in admitting I love both books even though I don’t fully comprehend all the subtext.

Randy exposed the key to beating Lesnar..

except he was 10 years too old and 50 pounds too light with no serious KO power. Find a guy who can control Lesnar’s takedowns and force him to stand up and fight. If Mir had any takedown defense I would give him a chance. I don’t see Brock ever developing tight striking game as much as people on the BROCKWAGON would think he would. But I don’t see Mir ever developing the wrestling skills either.

He has a chance

But 1) I don’t think he can stop Lesnar from taking him down, and 2) while he has great power his striking isn’t that good from a technical standpoint. If he can catch Brock he can definitely put him down but I don’t think his gameplan going in should count on him catching him with one punch like he did to Gonzaga.

by ufc4 on Nov 28, 2009 1:33 AM EST up reply actions

All I can say is Carwin is not on Randy’s level of wrestling. But Carwin could drop Lesnar cold, unlike Randy. I’m going to say he hits harder than Brock.

by Koob on Nov 28, 2009 1:38 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah, Carwin could catch him, however I think it’s a lot more likely that Brock does something similar to what he did in his last fight and pounds Carwin out after taking him down a few times.

by ufc4 on Nov 28, 2009 1:44 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah that is a real possibility..

this fight hinges on Crawin’s wrestling skills. I believe he is strong enough to be able to get back on his feet but we will see. I like Cain’s chances better in wrestling match, even at his size, but he just doesn’t have the power in his hands.

by Koob on Nov 28, 2009 1:48 AM EST up reply actions

Another thing I wonder about with Carwin is how he will perform if the fight goes 2, 3, 4, or even 5 rounds. This is a guy that has never been halfway through the first round, what’s gonna happen after he’s been beaten on by a 280 pound beast for 10 or 15 minutes? We really have no idea what his tank is like at this point.
