Gabriel Gonzaga Off UFC 108 Card Due to Staph Infection

Yahoo! Sports' Cagewriter Blog has the unfortunate news:

The hits keep coming for the UFC, Dana White and matchmaker Joe Silva. The fellas have to scrounge up a quality heavyweight to fight Junior Dos Santos Jan. 2 in Las Vegas at UFC 108. Sources with the UFC confirmed that Gabriel Gonzaga is off the card because of staph infection.

The Dos Santos fight was huge for the heavyweight division and now yet another big fight is off.  It is amazing just how many fights have been canceled as a result of injury as of late.  There isn't much to say other than that the UFC's luck has to get better at some point.

People are gonna say Cain vs. Junior

But do you really want to knock off 1 of your up and comers?

I really wanted to see this fight so this officially sucks. has 108 been hit the most hard?

No Lesnar/Carwin, No Silva/Belfort, No Nog/Cain, and now no Dos Santos/Gonzaga.

lol...

you mena JDS should fight the same guy he kocked the F out in his first UFC fight again?

now come on; even you must know that would be silly even for “thou whom are not the ufc”

3 guys come to mind as potential replacements

Andrei Arlovski – He is a free agent and is not signed with Strikeforce. Yes he has been down on his luck lately but still a tough test for either Cain or Dos Santos.

Jeff Monson – Yes the Rizzo loss hurt but had a 7 fight winning streak before that.

Gilbert Yvel – Another guy that would provide a decent test for Cain or Dos Santos.

by bigdmmafan on Nov 25, 2009 5:51 PM EST reply actions

I personally love the idea of bringing in Arlovski to fight JdS, but I doubt it will happen.

I think you have to look in-house for a replacement. Yvel is sanctioned to fight in Nevada though.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Nov 25, 2009 5:55 PM EST up reply actions

The problem is if you look in house you have what 3 options: Cain, Herring (if he would take the fight) or switch around a bunch of fights like Mir/Kongo or Buentello/Struve.

Andrei should stay at least 400 yards away from KO artists for the next little while.

Seattle Seahawks: The only team in the NFL to trail 17-17 according to Dick Stockton.

by SSreporters on Nov 25, 2009 6:20 PM EST reply actions

So UFC 108 has:

Light Heavyweight bout: Rashad Evans vs. Thiago Silva
Lightweight bout: Tyson Griffin vs. Jim Miller
Welterweight bout: Carlos Condit vs. Paul Daley
Maybe Junior Dos Santos if they can get someone to take him on one month’s notice.

I like a lot of the fights on this card, but none of them are what I would call big fights. At this point I suggest the smart thing for the UFC to do would be to put it on Spike.

by nottheface on Nov 25, 2009 6:23 PM EST reply actions

Weren’t there rumors of Daley being out as well.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Nov 25, 2009 6:26 PM EST up reply actions

If Daley is hurt as well they might as well call off 108 and move all the fights into 109. At least it would have a main card of:
Couture vs. Coleman
Evans vs. Silva
Trigg vs. Serra
Marguadt vs. Sonnen
Griffin vs. Miller
Show 3 or 4 of the prelims on Spike and you’d have a good show. It still wouldn’t do 500,000 buys.

It seems to me on top of the fact that there is an apocalyptic number of bad things happening in terms of injuries/headcases, etc – that this may signal a trend of guys deciding they aren’t going to come into fights at 80-90% anymore as they realize just how tough fights are becoming with the exponential improvements and quality of the level of fighters today. They see the downside of a loss derailing their shot at the top (esp. where there’s a lot of players in the mix) and the big money now that the sport is really growing…

No more Nog’s with staph infections, guys with nagging back/knee/shoulder injuries still going into the fights. I realize injuries were happening and guys pulled out before, but just sayin….

by The_Gaijin on Nov 25, 2009 7:00 PM EST reply actions

You might be on to something. How much did Cheick Kongo lose on his next contract by taking that short notice fight with Cain? By falling to Cain did he blow his chances of ever getting a title match? Plus if he loses again, now he has the spectre of the UFC cutting him floating over his shoulder. Who is going to want to take any risks in that scenario?

by nottheface on Nov 25, 2009 7:34 PM EST up reply actions

heres the solution

cancel ufc 108. Then hold a UFC/DREAM/Sengoku NYE event!

I like the idea of signing Arlovski to take him on. Even though his track record of late isn’t very good. But hey, if they can sign Baroni and Renzo to contracts, why not Andrei. And Monson won’t happen, he’s already fighting in about a month or so… (I think) And he’s fighting @ 205 to boot.

Or… Or… If Roy Nelson doesn’t make it to the finals of TUF, put him in there. He has experience and a name from the show (and before to some extent), and it should be a win for JDS so he isn’t derailed and can fight GG or someone else after that.

Cain vs. JDS is the best option here. So what if you knock off one of your up and comers? He can climb up the ladder again, and this card needs some meat.

JDS kills Cain. Terrible match up for Cain who the UFC wants to build with the (would be) HUGE Mexican fan base.

Not that I condone facism or any ism for that matter. Isms are in my opinion, not good. A person shouldn't believe in an ism, he should believe in himself.

I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me". Good point there, after all he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. Wouldn't change the fact I have to bum rides off of people.

Is this the worst 6 months in UFC history in terms of injury?

Getting to be ridiculous.

But as they say the sport is so great cause you never know what to expect, maybe they will sign another marquee heavy weight.

Then again, having a free end of the year show would be a great precedent. Make it the one free show each year that is not just a “not good enough for PPV show” but a X-Mas present to the fans after a long year, a PPV quality card for free.

For the UFC it may be a loss, but at the same time they can use it as a token of good will towards the fans and act like they are just the greatest company in history.

They might not even sell 500,000 with this PPV, but they could probably make a good chunk of change with sponsorships.

Mir called Brock a pussy for not standing with him and trading, but instead Brock took him to the ground and beat him.(where Mir is suposed to be really good at) and said that Brock was afraid.

Also, Nog had a staph infection(not sure if you know that), and that would mess up anyone in a fight, i really dont remember him EVER making up any excuses.

When Lesnar didn’t come after me, that really threw me off. He didn’t land any punches on his feet, did he? I didn’t expect him to run. He ran like a lightweight. … It’s my fault. I should have trained that he would be intimidated from the standup.

Yeah, really taking his beating like a man huh?

by ufc4 on Nov 26, 2009 10:05 AM EST up reply actions

So him mocking and taunting Brock in an interview after the fight is not taking his loss like a man, funny maybe you missed his other interviews about the fight. Mir never made excuses for losing he got beat, Nog on the other hand made every excuse in the book and to this day keeps crying about getting his ass beat by Mir. The fact that people still support that kind of bullshit behaviour from a fighter really says it all, never let hate get in the way you judge a fighter it makes you pathetic just like all the excuses.

by Raker on Nov 27, 2009 12:14 AM EST up reply actions

Show me some of this “crying” Nog is still doing about the loss to Mir, got a link? I showed you a quote that proved Mir didn’t take his loss like a man yet you still deny it while providing no proof for the BS you continue to spew. If you think " I didn’t expect him to run. He ran like a lightweight" is taking his loss like a man I don’t know what to tell you. You said he was “mocking and taunting Brock”, how is that taking it like a man?
