Pacquiao-mayweathe_1529957c

Set your calenders for May 1st - which is currently the same day as UFC 113: Shogun vs. Machida in Montreal.

Pacquiao vs Mayweather in negotiations for May 2010:

"Bob Arum and Richard Schaefer, promoters respectively of Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr, are under way with negotiations to seal the superfight between boxing's pound-for-pound kings. With May 1 2010 the projected date of the contest, most likely in Las Vegas. Judging by the history of such affairs, it will take weeks to iron out."

One of the last great Boxing Matches, I do wonder what the “split” will be, I do hope that this fight happens and if it is in May so be it… Nice find Nick, thx

Same day as UFC 113: Shogun vs. Machida in Montreal.

I heard something about that match not happening the day and place everyone thinks it was going to happen. This boxing talk may be the reason.

I pretty much always pick MMA over boxing, but even if it’s Shogun v. Machida II, I think I’d have to watch Manny vs. Floyd.

I am not a boxing fan

But I will DEFINITELY watch this fight! Anyone have any insight on how likely this fight will be?

I'm the kind of girl who loves to watch a GOOD fight!

i think it’s safe to say this fight is a lock to happen.

by nastyem on Nov 24, 2009 12:55 PM EST up reply actions

noooo

it’s far from a lock.

I’d say right now it’s probably 60/40 in favor of the fight happening.

The purse split is going to be a major issue

Which is stupid, because it boils down to a few millionaires arguing over how many tens of millions of dollars each of them will make.

I mean, I understand the basis for the argument, but when everyone’s getting paid that much money, it’s kind of silly.

Mayweather always has to one up everyone,

And I called it – KO in the 11th. Unfortunately I called it for Kessler.

by John Nash on Nov 24, 2009 1:32 PM EST up reply actions

Well they either generate tons of cash or zero. They either break records or there is no show. This, if it is even close to going the distance, will be a series of record setting PPVs. Its basically the top fight without question. No reason to not make it. Arguing about respect will just be posturing. This deal will get done

Ward v Kessler

was just ownership from the opening bell, I thought that Kessler was going to win a close bout yet Ward just dominated.. Yes the head butts did happen and the cuts were crazy nasty but for Kessler to blame his loss just on the head butts is well, sad… He never fought on the inside and from distance he just threw that crazy left that had no chance of landing, it was Ward’s night plain and simple, he won in impressive fashion, I don’t like seeing fights end due to cuts and going to a technical decision but hey what are ya going to do…

Ward was my pick to win the super 6 and its looking pretty smart right now, but I have never seen these dudes fight so its very lucky to pick a guy that looked so good. I mean I have likely seen them fight, but I didn’t pay close enough attention to remember or be able to pick winners.

Floyd “Money” Mayweather agrees to 50/50 split with a fighter promoted by his arch-rival Bob Arum? I doubt it.

by xDieseLx on Nov 24, 2009 2:07 PM EST up reply actions

Not really…

the split and haggling over points is meaningless when we’re talking potentially 50m plus for this deal (counting sequel).

This fight will happen because financially it doesn’t make sense for it not to.

Taking another fight and getting a 60-40 split is still alot less money than going 50-50 with the pacman.

The only guy who can fuck this up is arum and he doesnt have any other fighters left to milk manny with so the likelihood of this fight happening is high.

Maybe, I know very little about boxing. I do know that a judge thought DLH beat Floyd. You can say Floyd doesn’t get hit, but Pac gives more then he gets and if Floyd pulls punches protect his hand it could get interesting. Pac will push the pace, its a risk, but its how he can win. I believe in Roach.

Mayweather would take less money to fight a “lesser fighter” to avoid the L on his record. He’s been doing it for years. Arum isn’t going to be the person that fucks this up if it doesn’t go down…PBF is.

by mmalogic on Nov 24, 2009 2:18 PM EST up reply actions

To PBF, absolutely. His legacy is more important to him. You notice that he’s ducked other major challenger, including Mosley?

none of those challengers came gift wrapped with a 50m plus deal.

by mmalogic on Nov 24, 2009 2:40 PM EST up reply actions

And, as for you assertion that PBF doesn’t get hit, DLH hit him enough to win 4-5 rounds, and Manny’s a whole lot faster than DLH. I think you’re going to lose a loooot of money if this fight does happen. Which I doubt it will.

FMM v MP is a fight that has been talked about for 3 years now. Each of their last fights did over 1 million buys. Combined, this is expected to be the biggest ppv ever. 2 Million is a very reasonable guess. Zuffa would get crushed no mater what card they put against it.

The bottom line is Floyd will land more than Manny. Floyd has never been knocked out – Manny has.

I dont see how Manny can knock floyd out… forget about winning on points.

agreed...

I see it as being a domination by Mayweather honestly… He never gets hit, and moves well… Cotto had openings in the beginning of the fight, had he attacked Manny on the ropes… I think Mayweather will capitalize on Manny’s mistakes throughout… Manny is a much improved boxer, but still wins on being a good puncher… Floyd is too slick for him.

Forget what the UFC will do, what main event fighter of theirs would even sign on to a card opposite that fight. No one would watch your fight and any bonuses from ppv buys is going to be 1/2 it normally is. If you thought getting Anderson Silva to sign onto a fight was hard before…

by John Nash on Nov 24, 2009 1:25 PM EST up reply actions

Right, no more of this MMA vs Boxing bs. They would only be hurting themselves by having these 2 events on the same day. I’m sure many fans would buy both PPVs if they were scheduled on different days. I have never bought a boxing PPV but would buy Pacquiao / Mayweather. I would love to see Manny beat up Floyd. Floyd’s mistique is his undefeated record of fighting guys he knew he could beat and never really challenging himself. Manny almost has as many KOs as Floyd has fights and against great competition.

Didn’t Roach say Pacquiao wants the 60 part of the 60/40 split? I get his argument if the split was based on fighting skill but Mayweather has to be the bigger draw here.

by MauiPimpin on Nov 24, 2009 1:45 PM EST reply actions

posturing. 60 is where each guy will start, but mark my words, this deal gets done. This is the fight, the reason posturing in other fights is so you can take a strong hand into this fight. They won’t leave all the money on the table because of a minor split issue. Floyd is the draw and will get more, but there will be enough money after this fight for there grandchildren to retire.

yes....

This Pacquiao (as opposed to the one with losses) is looking like a world beater. Mayweather had a very long layoff and came back to beat a guy much much smaller than him. Maybe I could’ve worded it as recent schedule and finishes? I’m not saying I think Pacquiao will win but there’s no reason to think that Mayweather is that much better than him either. My statement was that if we based the purse split on strength of competition, recent wins, etc. it would be more of a 50/50 but that’s not how it works so, as a draw, I thought Pacquiao’s posturing was weird.

Im going heavy on money may… he’s a pussy but he’s the best boxer ever.

It’s a simple break down: Manny gets hit and Floyd doesn’t.

People will say Manny has more power… nope or at least its not enough to make a difference. Floyd doesnt hit hard because he doesnt want to break his hand – but if he wants to hurt you he will. He’s a deadly puncher if he wants to be.

Other people say Manny has speed… 115lbers cant even hit Floyd in the gym.

Im maxing out a bunch of accounts on floyd and if I can make it to vegas Ill put more.

Actually Mayweather can be hit. Zab Judah proved that. If you saw that fight, Zab won the first 4 rounds and roughed up Floyd. Floyd is quick, but he’s not superhuman. His number one attribute is his amazing ability to read and time his opponents. The question will be can Manny get past Mayweather’s rolling shoulder with a 5" reach disadvantage? I’m going to rewatch a lot of Manny’s fights before I make that call.

what would be bigger?

So this is about as far as stretch as possible, but what would be a bigger:
Mayweather-Manny

Lesnar vs. Fedor

No way it happens, but per chance Dana wants to pull all the stops just to get this fight going. If both happen 5/1, which would get more buys? i would have to say Manny-Floyd would, and Dana would be dumb to have the biggest MMA fight go head to head like that, but could Lesnar-Fedor come close to those kind of numbers?
