Quote of the Day: Houston Alexander Says "I Got Kevin 'Kimbo Slice' Ferguson on Spike TV"

"Yeah, Kevin Ferguson. On December 5th. The fight was presented to us and we didn't even hesitate.

... My hand is healed from the Sherman Pendergarst fight. We sparred on Sunday and it was 6 guys. We went 11 - 3 minute rounds. I'm practicing boxing, takedown defense, it's just crazy.

...I plan to peak at the time of the fight and work out the morning of the fight to get my blood flowing.

...Before a fight, I don't get nervous, I get anxious. I listen to Rage Against the Machine. I just want to get in there and start fighting. I'm really excited."

-- Houston Alexander confirms his fight against Kimbo Slice on 92.3 FM Todd N Tyler's. (audio)

Not only did he call it in June and won’t let me forget it, he has called a fight with Chuck to follow it. If it happens like that they will have to cut him out of his house. His head will be too large for doors.

Doesn’t matter, win or lose it is still Chuck next unless they want to push HA after a “big” win and give him the fight with Chuck. Either way, piles of money will be had.

by szucconi on Nov 24, 2009 11:58 AM EST up reply actions

My argument has been that it doesn’t matter. Win or lose, they should do Kimbo v. Chuck next.

There is an enormous amount of money to be made on that fight. And while you and I might understand that Kimbo’s got no chance, zero, against Chuck, the fact is that Chuck is at the lowest point in his career (you know, being semi-retired after four losses and three KO’s in five fights). It’s just about the perfect “out of retirement” match for Chuck, and on paper it’s a great stylistic matchup for Kimbo.

You know, if we ignore Chuck’s wrestling and superior striking.

The UFC will make that match unless they suddenly become allergic to money.

The same reason I enjoy seeing Bob Sapp get beat down.

Both are circus shows for casuals.

by DirtyML on Nov 24, 2009 12:06 PM EST up reply actions

I would hardly compare Kimbo to Sapp

Sure, both have been hyped as the “baddest mofo on the planet” even though it’s obvious their skill set is lacking, but you can hardly fault them just for that.

Kimbo, at least, seems intent on trying to genuinely train and improve his MMA game, whereas Bobu Sappu is still the exact same huge gorilla, and has always just relied on being bigger than whoever he’s fighting.

Calling Sapp a circus show I understand, same with Hong Man Choi. Calling a low level fighter who is working hard to get better a circus show just because his popularity is out of proportion with his skill seems a bit unfair though.

by CasualMMAFan on Nov 24, 2009 1:07 PM EST up reply actions

I think its premature to say that Kimbo is genuinely trying to improving his game...

Much of what has come out during this TUF season has actually made it look like Kimbo has done nothing to improve his game between when he last fought for EXC and coming on TUF. Not a good testimonial for his genuine efforts.

by Razreshat on Nov 24, 2009 1:15 PM EST up reply actions

I agree that prior to appearing on TUF Kimbo hadn’t done much, but judging from his past history and recent interviews with him, it sounds like a lot of the blame for that goes to his management and his “trainers”, who made good money off of him while apparently doing little to help him round out his game.

I would certainly consider appearing on TUF and spending 6 weeks doing nothing but training and fighting with top-tier competition trying to improve. Then there’s the fact that he’s recently begun training with ATT in Florida.

Make no mistake, I hardly think Kimbo is ever going to be a real contender, but it seems like the guy wants to learn and just needed to get hooked up with the right people, to get some proper training from coaches who want to help him instead of exploiting his name for a quick buck.

by CasualMMAFan on Nov 24, 2009 1:45 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t hate either of them.

But saying Kimbo is more “legitimate” than Bob Sapp? Sure, Sapp is now relatively useless, but he has fought some of the best kickboxers out there and won (he beat Ernesto Hoost, twice!) Hell, he even looked like he was about to finish the-then best heavyweight in the world for a moment..

i think its safe to say that Sapp will accomplished way more in his career than Kimbo probably ever will

by TLow on Nov 24, 2009 2:26 PM EST up reply actions

Oh, I shouldn’t have put legitimate in quotations, because you never said it and it sort of implied you did. My bad.

And I’d probably be cheering for Kimbo, for an unlikely upset…

by TLow on Nov 24, 2009 2:28 PM EST up reply actions

I actually don't have

any hate for Kimbo, and I was hoping he would win vs. Roy. I just really want to see Houston win in dominating fashion. I live in Omaha, so I’m a little biased there.

by rzor on Nov 24, 2009 12:07 PM EST up reply actions

Kimbo appears to be the nicest guy in the world. We all understand that he’s not a classically trained Mixed Martial Artist, but he’s in the TUF house, apparently committed to working his way up the proverbial ladder.

Who can blame the guy for taking hundreds of thousands of dollars from a promoter who wanted to put him out there as the main event? What was he supposed to say? “Uh, thanks Gary, but I think I should be opening the show and working for peanuts.”

Get out of here with that mess.

If he is getting a proper gameplan, it would not surprise me. If he’s doing one of those “stand up for the fans” fights he is going to take a nap.

Houston should be able to take this easily in the first round. We know Houston can KO guys like crazy, but I am still doubting Kimbo’s power. If Kimbo can KO Houston, then I’ll be impressed. But for now, I don’t think he has a chance in hell.
