A Shortage of Contenders for Lyoto Machida's UFC Light Heavyweight Title
Sergio Non breaks down the division:
• Because Rashad Evans and Thiago Silva lost so convincingly to Machida already, the winner of their UFC 108 showdown will still need another victory over a big name to regain credibility.
• The same holds true for Randy Couture, whose decision victory over Brandon Vera at UFC 105 was too close for comfort.
• The enormously talented Jon Jones lacks a major win and will still lack one even if he beats Matt Hamill on Dec. 5.
• (Quinton "Rampage") Jackson quit MMA to make movies.
• Keith Jardine, Tito Ortiz,Vera and Cane, have to restart after losing their last fights.
• Anderson Silva has no interest in facing Machida because of their friendship.
Non makes a strong case for Antonio Rogerio "Little Nog" Nogueira to be deserving of an immediate title shot against Machida. It's hard to argue with that should Mauricio "Shogun" Rua take the belt in his May rematch with Machida, but it will be hard to get Nogueira to fight his friend Lyoto Machida.
Meanwhile, Thiago Silva makes a counter-case to Ariel Helwani arguing that he will earn a title shot with a win over Rashad Evans at UFC 108. I could see Dana White echoing Silva on this, if only to hype up what is otherwise a lackluster headliner for UFC 108. Perhaps the winner of Evans/Silva could face Nogueira in a true #1 contenders match next spring.

Nog Vs winner of Silva/Evans would be nice.

we wont know who the LHW champ will be until May, thats plenty of time for a new contender to emerge AND/OR the champion to change (and rightfully be Rua, had to add that)

agreed
that’s plenty of time to get Nog another fight, and even have the winner of Evans/Silva fight another fight as well prior to May. 6 months is a long time and can change the division from what it is today.

How about Nog vs. Rashad/Silva winner as the co-main of the Shogun/Machida card?
"I thought I won the first round and I thought I won the second round. You see the damage on his face? I got him good," Ortiz said after the fight. "For me coming back, this was supposed to be a warm-up fight. Me and Dana talked about it being a warm-up fight, but Forrest is no warm-up fight, being ranked fifth in the world. I might have bitten off a little too much, but I still thought I won the fight....After back surgery, back after only one year. I want to see another athlete do what I do after one year of having two-level fusion."- Tito Ortiz, who apparently thinks he won the fight against Forrest Griffin

It would actually be just a little over 5 months, considering he probably wouldn’t be fighting for 3 or 4 months anyway I don’t think it would be a problem.

exactly what i was thinking.. there's a lottt of time..
They have till a couple of months after May to decide.. and if no one emerges (doubt it), and Randy wins against Coleman, i have a feeling they’ll still give it to him.
Plus, there’s always room for a trilogy if they somehow run out of challengers.. (which i doubt also.)

I think by the time the Rua rematch has happened, if Machida still has the belt, Lil Nog will be in the position for a title shot and I’m sure he was brought into the UFC and the division knowing he would have to face Machida if he was champion.

as others have suggested, griffin/nogueria makes alot of sense.
would give nogueria a high profile opponent, to get justify a title shot (if he wins) and also give him some more exposure with the casual fans.
plus, they’re never shy about fasttracking guys like forrest to title shots, so i could see them making it a #1 contender fight. especially with the potential for a griffin/rua rematch.

Would love to see Nog get a title shot sooner rather than later

A Shortage of Contenders forLyoto Machida’sShogun Rua’s UFC Light Heavyweight Title
fixed.
Regarding the contenders in the LHW division has no worries :
If Thiago Silva wins he should fight ugly nog.
If Rashad wins he should fight Rampage.
Winners of both can contend with the pinch hitter on deck being Randy.
If Shogun wins the rematch then you have even more possibilities with Forrest back in the mix not to mention an A. SIlva super fight
The LHW division is in great shape. The HW division is in great shape. The MW division has 1 (at most 2) more fights left for Anderson. The WW division is so dynamic there’s no longer term worries. The LW division after Sanchez is the least compelling assuming BJ wins.
What kills a division for some time is when a fighter cleans it out and then moves up semi permanently with the real belt and that’s probably what’s gonna happen with Anderson and BJ. GSP will most likely be last if he doesn’t lose until then.
The most important metric in the next few months is UFC 107’s ppv data as it will be telling if UFC primetime had any “lagging” effects with BJ’s pull (101 was too muddy to isolate this sufficiently).

Big Nog is handsome and very likable. Little nog looks and sounds like he was the “shit left over” as the doctor told Danny Devito in the movie “Twins”.

ha
I actually think lil’ nog is a bit more handsome than his twin, sometimes I look at Big Nog and he looks half dead with his eyes out of place, whereas lil’ Nog is just losing his hair. this conversation is now becoming a bit weird :P

If Machida wins and Couture beats Coleman, Machida vs. Couture will probably happen despite fans getting pissed about it. Machida will then get whoever comes out of the fray, but Silva and Rashad already lost. Ideally, a Nogueira win in his next fight gets him that shot at Machida if he’s willing to take it, otherwise the UFC will line up the Shogun rematch as Lil Nog wants that fight.
If Rua wins the rematch, all bets are off. There are so many challenges that the UFC could sell at that point, but Nogueira vs. Shogun would be ideal.
I mentioned Nogueira vs. either Jardine or Griffin first, and that’s what should happen.

Best case scenario is Rua beats Lyoto in the rematch.
Then you got Lyoto vs Couture (if he beats Coleman)
And you have Lil’ Nog, Forest, and Rampage (if he ever returns) all as possible challengers before a third match with Lyoto. Amazing that they’re all rematches.

Why not Forrest Griffin? He won his last fight.
for all intents and purposes, just consider all my posts as works of satire.

A Forrest Griffin/Randy Couture fight would be pretty huge from a fan’s perspective…both guys are beloved. However, I doubt it would happen.
Nogueira should get the winner of Silva/Evans…I am totally on board with that idea.
Jon Jones versus Tito Ortiz has to happen if Jones gets by Hamill.

I’m thinking Griffin vs. Rashad/Silva Winner
by IRodC on Nov 24, 2009 4:05 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
My solution would be to have lil nog coach TUF 11 opposite of Forrest Griffin, this way you could introduce him to the casual fan and if Shogun wins the title, the winner of this fight could fight him in a rematch. The timing would be perfect and it could be a good money fight. If Machida wins then give him another contender while the winner of this fights someone else for a right to fight for the title.
