Will Kerry Vera Become the Gina Carano of 135 Pounds?
While UFC 106 was the focal point of mixed martial arts action this weekend, Strikeforce did manage to promote a smaller event at the Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kansas on Friday night that featured Missouri wrestling standout Tyron Woodley, Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante, Team Punishment-product Aaron Rosa, and a laundry list of local talent hoping to make their impression on Scott Coker for future shows. While Tyron Woodley easily coasted to a submission victory over Rudy Bears in the main event, the women's 135 lbs. match-up between Kim "Sugar Free" Couture and Kerry Vera was a bout that gave a relatively unknown fighter in women's MMA a chance to shine.
Vera's extensive background in Taekwondo, boxing, kickboxing, and Muay Thai gave her the abilities to make a smooth transition to MMA, a move that was spawned by her determination to find new challenges. Her husband, current UFC fighter Brandon Vera, is also in her corner with an impressive background in the sport, but she also trains with Lloyd Irvin in her ground game along with honing her boxing at City Boxing in the past.
So, what's with all the hype? Why would someone try to compare her to Gina Carano? Carano's rise to the top not only focused on her skills in the cage, but it also relied on her good looks and ability to win. Vera, while still green with only two professional fights, could become that type of fighter. Like Carano, she comes from a background in fighting and is a natural athlete, and those attributes will only further the talk that she could become a legitimate threat in Strikeforce's 135 lb. weight division.
Strikeforce did the perfect job in piggy-backing UFC 105's advertising for Randy Couture vs. Brandon Vera by pitting Randy's former wife against Brandon's wife only a week later. While it probably didn't add insane numbers to the broadcast, those who did tune in were treated to one of the most lopsided beatdowns we've seen all year in any striking war.
Vera's quick hands, speedy footwork, and ability to intelligently mix strikes completely crushed a slow, plodding Couture who showed nearly no improvement in her striking. Couture's gameplan, like her ex-husband's, was to nullify Vera's speed and clinch for takedowns, but Vera's Muay Thai experience and strength easily allowed her to do damage while defending and moving away from those situations. Mauro Ranallo tried to sell us on the fact that Couture wasn't involved in the fight for her name, but that's a hard fact to swallow after such a lopsided knockout victory for Kerry Vera.
While challenging Vera in the cage will be one of the major selling points for her in the future, Coker will more than likely try to get her involved in media appearances as another woman who is attractive, but has the ability to fight. It isn't a bad move either. Carano, Cyborg, and Coenen all sit toward the top of the heap in the 145 lb. women's division, but Strikeforce has yet to truly develop their 135 lb. weight class. Vera is a perfect entry into the mix, and she would also be a perfect combatant in the rumored 135 lb. tournament to determine an eventual champion. And as the broadcast team mentioned following her win over Couture, a bout with Sarah Kaufman would be pure fireworks. Make it happen, Strikeforce.

Gina Carano should be the Gina Carano at 135. Vera is good, but Carano has better muay thai and that is what Vera does best. Carano could make 135 if Vera made a big name for herself and there was tons of cash on the table. The loss to Cyborg may make her focus, train hard, and think about dropping.
I’m going to say that I’d have to see Carano make 135 and actually perform in order to say that. Ideally, Strikeforce would want someone separate at 135 to sell both divisions and have a number of women to attract the demographic.

She has done it before, just not in years. There is no 145 class in Muay Thai in Thailand. And Vera would have to build her brand a little more before super fight like this, but I have little doubt Carano could make it. Could, but not will. Winning and being the star has given her a long leash when it comes to weight, but getting beat down could change that. She would likely try to drop if she got another beating at the hands of cyborg or on her way to a rematch.
If Carano was struggling to make 140 lbs, I don’t see how she could make 135. While she may have made the cut years ago, things may have changed in her body that makes her unable to do it now. Also, one has to consider how the weight cut would affect her in the fight because she could be drained.

I would struggle to made 150 this afternoon, but I could, with time, proper diet, and training, cut to 135 or maybe even 125. She has never looked sucked in. She may not have it in her to cut, but I have no doubt, none that she could do it.
I don’t know.
She properly trained and dieted for her last bout and made 143. If she loses to Cyborg again, I could see her sucking it up and doing it.

I think they covered her belly for AG for a good reason. She has had fights at 135, came in over weight (by 3 or 4 pounds), and turned to the fighter she was going to fight and said something like “Come on, you came here to fight, right?”. She has had zero motivation to eat right and make weight. She spends ten minutes in a sauna, likely not even in plastics, and sure she thinks she is struggling, but she could do much more. She could never make weight to wrestle Shute.
Some people think I am a dumb, ugly human being, but really I am a beautiful ape, with exceptional verbal skills.
WTF
szucconi that only happened once against Rosi. Also, the "Come on, you came here to fight, right?" comment is completely made up.
Look, its not an exact quote, but I did read it from some sort of interveiw from either Rosi or someone who was at the event and I paraphrased (although its my bad for not having a source) so if it is made up it wasn’t me who made it up and its a theme with Gina that the other fighter will not back out and they have no choice but to fight her. I am positive that she could make 135 when I could make 135 and we are the same height and I am a dude.

Is she really at City Boxing? I used to train there, and I never heard mention of her continuing her training at CB after Brandon left. And I was there a ton, at all times of the day, and never saw her. KJ Noons yes. Kerry Vera, no.
I’m not saying you’re wrong. I’m just wondering.
She used to be there. I should probably change that since her website isn’t updated either. It still says Mark Dion is both their managers.

Heads up Leland:
To the best of my knowledge, she trains at Alliance in Chula Vista, likely with Eric Del Fierro. Same location/coach as Dominic Cruz.
Thanks for the information, pdl.

That was one hell of an ass kicking
But I need to see a couple more fights to get a real opinion on here. Vera vs. Kaufman would be awesome.
"Shotguns? What, like guns that fire shots?"
@deowade
Just as comparisons to Gina Carano are a tad premature, putting her in against Kaufman would be pretty cruel at this point. Maybe Vera could pull off the upset but she needs to build up to someone like that. Kaufman is like a legit top-3 in the division.
Vera does have potential though, and if StrikeForce is going ahead with an 8-woman tournament for the 135 belt, she’d probably be a good (or at least marketable) addition.
Nobody is comparing her to Gina Carano is a sense of skill, but rather in a sense that she has the looks and athletic ability to become a face of a 135 lb. division in Strikeforce.

The thing with Gina Carano is, she has both elite skill (and athletic ability) and pin-up looks. There is no one else with that combination in women’s MMA. Right now Vera has shown potential, and she isn’t bad looking, and she already has a name (in part because of her husband), but at 135 I think Miesha Tate takes her both in the looks department and in her in-ring accomplishments, and no one is comparing Tate to Carano. It really is too early to be making comparisons to Carano yet. Let’s see where she is after two more fights first.
And as the broadcast team mentioned following her win over Couture, a bout with Sarah Kaufman would be pure fireworks. Make it happen, Strikeforce.
NO..that would be too early and too soon.. she only has two fights, and going from Kim Couture to Kaufman would be a HUGE step up in competition..Make Kerry get more cage time, make her get more fights with people on her level of experience, and give her more exposure.
only then should you do the mega fight with your top dog.. they wouldn’t be rushing kerry, and they’d earn more money this way too.
It would be a huge step up in competiton and is probably more suited for a bout down the road. I’d like to see Kerry against grapplers first.

yep.. that's what i want too.
she needs to get tested more before feeding her to the wolves right away.

Well since it's Strikeforce...
I’m sure she’ll be fed a tiny japanese woman to build her up to Kauffman.

Well, I’m not keen on a bout with Kaufman now, but down the road… it would be awesome.

She has Potential
but I highly doubt she can be Sarah Kaufman at this point.
She needs to get more fights under her belt before she fights the best 135lbers…
I’m excited to see how far she can go.
As far as 135 lb female fighters are concerned, the only ones that I know of are Shayna Baszler, Meisha Tate, and Sarah Kaufman. Baszler and Tate are mainly ground fighters, so I would be interested to see how Kerry Vera would do against them. In my opinion, Kaufman looks to be the female 135er who could rule that division at this point, but a Kaufman vs Kerry Vera fight down the road sounds very appealing.

Mauro on Lady Couture
Mauro Ranallo tried to sell us on the fact that Couture wasn’t involved in the fight for her name, but that’s a hard fact to swallow after such a lopsided knockout victory for Kerry Vera.
To say the very least!

They need to build up Kerry to eventually fight Miesha Tate. Think about that. Lets not talk about Kaufman, Roxy, and La Rosa, who will most likely be fighting for the title.
You’re probably right :) I think the 135 lbs division might be more exciting than 145 lbs.
In addition to the ones you mentioned, there’s Amanda Buckner, Kaitlin Young and Hitomi Akano.
I think the 135 lbs division might be more exciting than 145 lbs.
I don’t think you’ll get any argument from anyone who has more than a passing knowledge of womens MMA. 135 is by far the most stacked women’s division in the western hemisphere. 145 is like the female equivalent of the men’s heavyweight division … a handful of legit fighters and a bunch of dreck.
Now if only someone would rescue the sub-135 pounders from the restrictive Japanese scene, all would be right with the world.
I don't know...
As shitty as Couture looked I think the worst part for her is the fact that she did look greatly improved.
Vera vs. Tate
Is a fight I’d like to see. I think Miesha Tate has the right combo of ability and looks that Carano has. Vera is an up and comer for sure.
