UFC Ortiz vs Griffin 2 Results: Josh Koscheck Chokes Out Anthony Johnson
Two of the most physically imposing athletes in the welterweight division met and Josh Koscheck emerged the clear winner.
Koscheck opened the action by landing a hard left hook that stunned Johnson briefly. Soon after he landed a hard right that Johnson quickly answered with a right of his own. Johnson began scoring with leg kicks and then stunned Koscheck with a hard right hand. A stunned Koscheck quickly worked for a take down from the clinch but Johnson sprawled.
Johnson then fired a blatantly illegal knee to Koscheck's face -- that appeared to have been partially blocked by Koscheck -- Koscheck then took a lengthy recovery time and Refereee Mario Yamasaki deducted a point from Johnson. Johnson's finger nail appeared to scratch Koscheck's eye during the collision.
Yamasaki disregarded the doctor's inclination to stop the fight and restarted the action. Koscheck responded by shooting for a single leg take down and got Johnson's back. A hard knee to the body set up an attempt to take Johnson's back that was evaded.
Round two saw Johnson coming out firing and switching stances. Koscheck then caught Johnson with an eye poke that briefly paused the action. Koscheck landed a high kick on the restart. Then Johnson caught another eye poke. Johnson came out angry. And they traded a tough barrage of shots before Koscheck shot in and took Johnson down.
From top position, Koscheck landed a series of short sharp elbows to Johnson's face. After taking a beating, Johnson was gasping for air and Koscheck took his back. Then he sunk in the choke and got the tap out at 4:47 of the second round.

wh is Brent saying the knee wasn’t illegal and your calling it blatant? And not that it really matters but isn’t it worth mentioning that Koscheck was grabbing the wrong eye
The knee was headed for illegal, and would have been illegal if Kos hadnt put his arm up to defend himself.
So, should fighters purposely allow an illegal strike to come in undefended just to get the proper response from the ref? And can a fighter intentionally throw a knee to the head of a down opp, if they have an arm in the way?

you bring up an interesting argument my comment was in regards to one writer contradicting the other
The knee hit the arm, which is legal. There's no "take".
It’s no different than the knee from Mike Aina/Billy Evangelista. Sure, it was headed for illegal, but that’s not what happened.

If the knee strike doesn't touch the illegal area, then it how can it be an illegal blow?
The groin is a larger area than the testicles – it’s the entire genitals & pubic region, plus the immediate inner thigh, usually, since they’re all connected by the same nerves. You can’t block all that with just a palm, so the illegality stands.

Until you can answer that question successfully, there is no debate here.

pretend i have really big hands and i put one of my really big hands over my groin, and successfully manage to cover the entire genitals & pubic region, (plus the immediate inner thigh, usually, since they’re all connected by the same nerves) and testicles and pubes and lice and cheezits and car keys and whatever the fuck else is in my groin.
Then pretend that you fire a soccer kick straight up the pipe and kick me in the balls.
that is a fucking illegal blow.

Kos was grabbing the correct eye for the eye scratch; rumbles fingers brushed against the opposite eye than the knee struck toward.
As for the illegal strike, I can see why the ref would call it considering even in replay it looks like it catches him lightly on the forehead above the other eye. So I can imagine at full speed the ref saw what we all saw the first time. Kos seemed to react immediately to the eye scrape though and didn’t really seem effected by the attempted knee. (It doesn’t take much to scratch your eye ball, not like we have to see rumbles finger go into eye up to the knuckle)

Johnson didnt perform as i expected and maybe it was the step up in competition... or
maybe it was him just fighting last month… either way i think without all the missteps of this fight it could have been better
