Article about Ontario MMA Sanctioning
The Toronto Star this morning put out an article about the fight to have MMA sanctioned in Ontario, Canada's most populous province, where like most Canadian provinces, there is a huge MMA fanbase. The article is relatively sympathetic to MMA and it would appear that the writer did some research for it, even if there is a couple of small errors made. Here are some of the points:
Most Ontario residents have to restrict their passion to the TV screen. Mixed martial arts – both amateur tournaments and professional fights – are banned in the province. They're permitted everywhere else in Canada except Newfoundland and Saskatchewan, according to UFC officials.
Ontario's lucrative market has made the province ground zero for UFC's expansion drive. The company, considered one of the hottest sports properties in the world, has hired Noble Chummar, a partner at the Toronto law firm Cassels Brock & Blackwell LLP, as a registered lobbyist. Also advising UFC is Cassels' chairman, former premier David Peterson.
[UFC VP] Ratner describes the number of pay-per-view buys in Canada as "staggering," but won't divulge figures. (It is speculated that UFC 100, a series of fights last July broadcast in 51 countries, sold 1.5 million pay-per-view orders, at $44.95 each.)
He says 42 per cent of the 18,900 fans at Montreal's Bell Centre for a UFC event in 2008 were from Toronto. With average prices of $262, the two UFC events held in Montreal so far each grossed about $5 million in ticket sales. UFC is planning matches in Vancouver next July, but needs the approval of city council.
Nevada and New Jersey were the first states to sanction MMA events in 2001. Today, 41 of 48 states with athletic commissions have given MMA the green light, Ratner says. Massachusetts is poised to be next, followed by New York, he adds.
But Ontario doesn't seem ready to jump on the bandwagon anytime soon.
For those who don't know, the Toronto Star is one of Canada's bigger newspapers, and is usually associated with a slight liberal bent. The article really is worth reading in full, and I do think its significant because they gave it a lot of ink, and it is done by their feature writer who, I think, gives a pretty good representation of the history of MMA to the casual reader and talks about the UFC's lobbying efforts in the province, which involves enlisting the help of a former premier.

With the Maple Leafs sucking donkey testicles for the last 5 years, lots of Ontarians have moved on to MMA.

Right, it’s actually a brilliant enough strategy. Have them move into MMA, where they’ll presumably become brain damaged enough to become leafs fans again

There will never be MMA in Ontario, the person who runs the boxing commission is way to ignorant on the the subject of mma and how to saction it with out hiring ignorant officals and ignorant judges; when that happenes some is going to get killed in the ring/octagon and is going to send MMA back into the darkages, Fans of MMA in ontario just sit on it, and just drive to Quebec or Manitoba or the states if you wanna see live MMA

All it will take to get MMA sanctioned in Ontario is to get the government to need chap political points.
The Premier could easily fiddle with the commission to get MMA sanctioned if he thought it would benefit him politically and he needed that sort of boost.
Just wait until the next provincial election.

There is no need for the premier to push MMA to get political bonus points. The traditional Liberal voting block is women and seniors. Pusing something as threatening looking as MMA would send his bread and butter voting block into a tizzy.
The opposition also have their heads so far up their asses right now that Dalton McGuinty could barbeque a live kitten on TV and still win the election.
Don’t hold your breath.

You're wrong.
All that’s stopping it right now is the commissioner. He’s a boxing guy and he’s relying on an interpretation of federal law that nobody else agrees with.
Even in Vancouver, where the council is still dithering on regulation, there’s two amateur MMA cards happening downtown next Friday with council approval.
The UFC is lobbying the feds to change one line in the criminal code that would change that. I’d give them a good chance of getting it done in 2010, especially with the Rogers Centre folks backing the push.

He isn’t really even a boxing guy, he’s just extremely lazy. He knows that if MMA gets legalized in Ontario he has to do a lot more work, and is therefore opposed to MMA.

The most recent polling data from Ontario disagrees with you.
Nanos Poll – PDF
The governing party holds only a two point lead, and the strength of the opposition is in male voters. Certainly if there’s a change of government in Ontario (and history suggests there will be at the next election – no party has held power for more than two terms since the Big Blue Machine) we’d probably see MMA sanctioning right away.
