I don’t see the problem. If anything, Zuffa deserves to be commended for not making guys take a pay cut when they move down to the WEC.

People who get riled up about the WEC pay scale need to keep in mind that the WEC isn’t making any money. Zuffa already pays out purses that are two to five times greater than their gate receipts, and their income from Versus is pretty much nil. Why should Zuffa have to subsidize WEC just because their other MMA brand is a cash cow?

The fact remains that the WEC still pays the little guys better than anyone else. That is why they have been able to assemble so much top talent. I don’t see anyone bitching about Shooto or PFC not paying their flyweights enough, so why is everyone bitching the WEC?

by Steve4192 on Nov 20, 2009 11:47 AM EST up reply actions

Because comparatively speaking, no one is watching SHOOTO. Out of sight, out of mind.

No one is watching WEC either.

Their ratings and live attendance are minuscule.

Just listen to how quiet it is when Jose Aldo defeats the #1 guy in his weight class to take the title off of him…it’s f’n crickets

*sigh* Here's my point

Is it right that a UFC Wash-out is getting paid more than a current champion and a #1 Contender? A great and resounding NO!

but that’s the way the world works.

He signed his contract before he was a UFC washout. They signed their contracts before they were the champ and the number 1 contender and in the WEC.

I don’t see anyone bitching about Shooto or PFC not paying their flyweights enough, so why is everyone bitching the WEC?

I’m guessing the assumption is that Zuffa can afford to pay their fighters more than they do, whereas Shooto and PFC and the like probably can’t (not to nearly the same extent, anyway).

But more than anything I think it’s just a knee-jerk revulsion at such great fighters getting paid so little. I can understand that, even if that’s the only way it can reasonably be right now.

Dear DW,
Fold the FW’s and BW’s into the UFC right now and get these guys the money they deserve. 15,000 to show for the now-former champion?

by woomikee on Nov 20, 2009 10:16 AM EST reply actions

Aldo and Brown are 2 of the top fighters in the world and make $13k and $15k to show? That’s sad. They both deserve much more.

There’s no need to fold the FW & BW divisions into the UFC. As other people have suggested, add divisions to both the UFC & WEC and use the WEC as a feeder organization for the UFC. I know it won’t happen, but it would probably give us more free shows and higher pay for the little guys.

by cmsove on Nov 20, 2009 10:40 AM EST reply actions

I'm confused as to why you think adding more divisions to the WEC will get them more pay?

That just doesn’t make any sense.

If the UFC has 145 and 135 classes those guys will get paid more when they move over. More sponsorship money, more bonus money and bigger contracts.

Then you use the WEC as the minor leagues so a really good prospect like Jake Rosholt doesn’t have to fight a Dan Miller in his 4th fight.

The UFC will have higher caliber of talent because they won’t need to scrounge around finding guys to round out cards. You won’t need to have no names at 155 fighting when you can take top guys at 145 and 135 instead.

And the lesser fighters can learn and grow in a really solid org against other solid but not great talent.

A merger and a minor league is the best thing for everyone except Versus IMO.

I think this is kind of obvious isn’t it? This is what people keep saying they want, but cmsmove said: “There’s no need to fold the FW & BW divisions into the UFC.” and then ends it by saying “I know it won’t happen, but it would probably give us more free shows and higher pay for the little guys.”

That makes no sense to me.

I think keeping the WEC around even as a “minor league system” for the UFC is a bit much. They trimmed off the other divisions for a reason, I don’t see them adding them back.

McCulloch getting paid more to show up and lose than the (then) Champ did to show up and defend his title is pretty whack, too, yo.

by Kierkegaard on Nov 20, 2009 11:37 AM EST reply actions

Are you forgetting that Razor Rob was a champ himself? Also, he had the benefit of being one of the guys Zuffa inherited in the WFA buyout and got to keep his above-market WFA deal.

It take a while for compensation to catch up with performance. Rest assured that in another couple of years, guys like Also & Brown will be making a LOT more than Razor Rob.

I don’t think it will take that long.

blah on Gamburyan’s fight. Mixed martial arts or whatever, that fight was terrible. i kept switching over to watch TUF and the d*mn Road Rules/Real World challenge rather than watch that fight. worse than the Mayhem/Shields fight. who thought that should be the lead-in to the main event?

Gatti. Dekkers. Pele. Aoki. Kang. Vanderlei. Basillio. Harry Greb.

Really?

I actually really like that fight :( Gamburyan was controlling Garcia, taking him down, gnp’ing the shit out of him, they both landed some good shots…..
