Chad Mendes and Brad Pickett Join WEC Roster
Two fighters have been signed by the WEC over the weekend: Brad Pickett and Chad Mendes.
MMAMania with the story on Pickett:
The WEC and British 135-pounder Brad Pickett have come to terms on a multi-fight deal, according to Fighters Only magazine.
Pickett (17-4) enters the WEC on a seven-fight win streak, having not lost since June of 2007. He has spent the majority of his career at the 145-pound featherweight limit with much success, including being the featherweight champion when he fought in Cage Rage.
Nicknamed "One Punch," Pickett has made a career out of finishing fights. He has gone to a decision only four times out of his 21 total professional fights. Eight of his victories have come via submission, while six have been earned via knockout.
The "One Punch" nickname has always stuck out like a sore thumb considering that he doesn't have all that much one shot power. Since losing back-to-back fights for the first time in his career in 2007 Brad has gone on a run of seven straight wins, finishing six of them.
Sherdog reported on the Mendes Signing:
Mendes, a protégé of Urijah Faber’s Alpha Male team, is expected to make his promotional debut somewhere between January and March. MMAJunkie.com was the first to report the Thursday signing through WEC General Manager Reed Harris.
...
Mendes is a 2008 NCAA Div. 1 wrestling runner-up, a two-time All-American at California Polytechnic University and a Pac-10 champion.
In addition to his solid wrestling background Mendes also has good power in both hands and the same relentless style that has made Alpha Male fighters such a handful for everyone they face.
Mendes can be seen in action in the video below (fight starts at 3:30):

Dang
WEC has been going apeshit with signings over the last week. Making a big push in preparation for a big move (or wishful thinking)?

It's not only Pickett and Mendes...
…they also recently signed another Karo’s cousin Karen Darabedyan (8-1), Horodecki (13-1), Tyler Toner (9-1), Brandon Visher (12-0) and Iranian wrestler Kamel Shalorus (4-0-1).

I
I’m curious whether it has something to do with Bellator getting these tv deals.

Very possible
Of course, my hope is that they’re going to extract the top ten of each lower weight class into the UFC and turn the WEC into a minor league/demotion & graduation promotion.
