Will Jake Shields Submit Jason "Mayhem" Miller?
If he can, he'll do what Georges St. Pierre and Jacare could not. That being said, Shields will likely give it a try:
"My grappling is my strongest point. I work my stand up all the time. I knockout people all the time in training, but that’s training," commented the middleweight contender. "I figure I’ll save the stand up for when I need it and work to put it toward the ground and play to my strength. There’s no reason for me to try to prove anything to show anyone. I’ll stand up when I need it, but the ground is my strength."
The two have actually trained together in the past, and are very familiar with each other’s game.
"We trained a couple of times together. It was one of those things where it was nonstop transitioning from one move to the next on the ground," said Shields. "Hopefully we’ll have that kind of fight out there."
Shields' ground and pound is good, but not excellent. On the other hand, his submissions, base and positional control are outstanding. He's a less polished pure grappler than Jacare, but a better MMA grappler as it pertains to weaving in strikes. The problem lies in that tiny space: where Jacare has overwhelming positional control, I'm not sure Shields does. And while Shields has better ground and pound, Miller's durability is far too strong for him to be affected outside of point scoring. That may be enough for Shields to win, but it means he'll have to go all five rounds with the very game Miller. That's a tad disconcerting for me.
I guess what I'm driving at is that Shields is the favorite for a reason, but he'll have to continually pour the offense on from bell to bell. Any space he gives Mayhem or time to breathe could cost him dearly. Shields has never shown a willingness to take damage to push the fight and while Miller is no Giorgio Petrosyan, he is capable of damaging Shields at any point in the fight provided they are standing.
Most importantly, though, will be the submission attempts from Shields. St. Pierre fought an emaciated Miller, but that only underscores how durable "Mayhem" is. Hungry and dehydrated, Miller withstood blistering ground and pound, superior stand-up and several close submission attempts from St. Pierre without every conceding. He lost and lost badly, but the point is that Miller is extremely difficult to put away, particularly for a fighter like Shields who can't deliver the same level of physical damage. And while Jacare put on a positional control clinic on Mayhem as he worked takedowns to mount to back control and even back to mount over and over again, Shields is candidly not the grappler Jacare is. This is a different fight, of course, and anything can happen, but if Mayhem is capable of backing up his statement that he won't let grapplers fight their fight anymore, Shields will be forced to push the pace and do more exchanging on the feet than I suspect he's willing.
As for the submission itself, Georges St. Pierre remarked that twisting Miller's limbs made him feel like he was trying to submit an alien with rubber appendages. Jacare also came close a few times, but with no cigar. Miller often gets flack for being more promotional material than championship material, but he does posses both technical defensive know-how and grit.
Shields is my pick to win, but I'm going to be biting my nails until the final bell sounds.

Strikeforce and CBS should be pulling for Miller to win this fight. Shields has a bland personality and his fighting style isn’t exciting to the casual fan. Miller is an exciting character and is already known by many from hosting Bully Beatdown. CBS could (and should) piggyback on that popularity if Miller takes this fight. Seems to be the story of this card, the favorites are all less marketable than the underdogs.
That being said Shields probably takes this. Miller has shown he’s susceptible to being controlled on the ground, and Shields is an excellent grappler with good takedowns.

My instructor trained with Miller some back in Hawaii in the day and goes so far as to say that he thinks Mayhem may very well be immune to rear naked chokes. He would just let folks come over and try their luck and nobody could get it done.
Needless to say, I definitely think Miller’s chances are much better the oddsmakers.

Why bit your nails? Miller’s only won 4x by KO, and will in no way submit Shields.
Shields by UD.

"he'll have to go all three rounds with the very game Miller."
Won’t it be 5 rounds?

The only way in my opinion that Jake has a chance at winning is grinding out an extremely boring lay and pray clinic for three rounds on Miller. I want Jason Miller to win because I don’t think he will get submitted in this fight and he is very under rated. I hope Miller doesn’t let Jake Shields hump him for three rounds.

i think the oddsmakers have this line wrong
if anything i think it’s closer to a 50/50 fight, and i’m going on the record to pick miller.
shields should be spending his days (a) religiously working on his striking and (b) at welterweight

This is the best fight on the card
People underestimate Mayhem pretty hardcore, and while Shields has good subs, as Luke mentioned, Mayhem isn’t exactly easy to tap out.

Won’t Mayhem have a solid size advantage? Hasn’t he fought at LHW before, while Shields should prolly be a WW?

Which is why I think Miller takes this fight. Shield is hands down the better fighter, but he’s moving up in weight and taking on a fighter who is hard to submit. I see Miller beating him in the standup, stopping the sub attempts, scrambling and muscling his way out when on the ground, and then beating Shields in the standup again. There are a lot of other, higher ranked MWs than Miller that I see Shields having an easier time with.

If it took Jake Miller like two rounds to submit Paul Daley, he isn’t going to sub Mayhem Miller.

Yeah, Jake Miller won’t sub ’Mayhem! Wait…

This is a serious question
I’ve seen Mayhem fight once, and that was the Jacare DQ, which showed me nothing. What are Miller’s strengths, and what are his weaknesses? What type of fighter is he vulnerable against, and what type would he match up well versus?
Thanks.

He is weaker against wrestlers, even back before GSP was the dominating force we see today he took Miller down almost at will.

Mayhem is pretty well-rounded
He is a decent striker and good on the ground. As said already, he doesn’t have great takedown D. and works best on the ground from top positions.

Impressively enough
…he has only ever lost once via submission, and that was over seven years ago. His other five losses (including to GSP) were via decision as well as the NC against Jacare in his last DREAM fight.
(per Wikipedia)
I’m excited for this fight. I don’t think Shields has the striking to put Miller away and I think that Miller’s size advantage will be handy against Shields’ grappling.

Shields
Jake Shields is tough to beat. I like Mayhem a lot, but I don’t know if he’s going to be the guy to do it.

Jake is ok but i got my money on Miller
IMO Miller is far better in stand up. and will catch Jake sooner or later. plus i give the stamina edge to Miller as well. i hope to see a TKO in the 3rd.

I personally think that this is Miller’s fight if he fights it smart. For some reason I feel like Shields is over rated. His striking, from what I’ve seen, is dramatically ineffective. I haven’t seen all his fights though, but what I have seen didn’t look good. So I think that Mayhem will be able to keep this standing and use his range to control the fight.

The comments on this post represent what the odd makers failed to convey, which is a pretty even match up that won’t be easy for either fighter.

IMO Miller was winning the second Jacare fight until he punted Jacare in the head If Jake can’t sub miller or win the first three rounds i don’t see him winning the fight. the later rounds will be all miller due to a carido edge. Never know theres a first time for every thing miller may get subbed i just doubt it.
