Is it me, or is couture using a weigh-in to debut an underwear line?

Not really. It’s the consensus excuse, and it’s actually right. Most fans are guys, and guys think with their dicks, for the most part. And its obviously proven here.

My girlfriend always talks about which fighters are cute. I think the issue is we just look at the gender we are attracted to sexually in those terms first. The imbalance comes from what you said: Most fans tend to be hetero males, so a woman in the cage gets the unusual reactions here.

It doesn’t help that the media sexualizes these women too. Gina gets butt-nekkid, Couture’s up there in lingerie, even Cyborg got a magazine cover talking about her beauty (although she turned almost 180 degrees away from the camera for the shot).

It’s reality though.

Outsports.com is covered with beefcake photos, and they talk about their opinion on how the men look and I’m sure if there was a sports site mostly made up of women readership they’d probably do the same for the men.

Can people not like it, sure, but it’s going to happen.

by Phildo on Nov 20, 2009 2:09 PM EST up reply actions

It'll never happen as long as men are watching MMA.

I wrote a fanpost about the same issue, and I’m usually one of the guys saying the same thing that you are. But this time around it’s obvious that Kim Couture did that on purpose.

Not going to happen as long as women use their sex appeal to market themselves. Was it necessary for Kim to wear that? Come on, it was done with the intention of making herself more marketable. Im ok with that, use what you’ve got to get you as far as you can.

What comedian was it that commented about cleavage and low rise jeans, etc. Saying how dudes should go around showing a little shaft, etc to do the same thing? Maybe Dane Cook, cant remember for sure.

I agree wholheartedly.

And you’ll almost never hear me make any excuses for why it’s acceptable. This is the one exception. Couture’s clothing in no way says “respect me as an athlete.”

I hate the mentality that it’s ok or forgivable but in this case, Couture has invited it. Most likely to distract us from her underwhelming prior fights. She has tits, a famous name, and little to no talent. This is her only way of remaining relevant.

Jordan Breen was ranting about this card and pretty much in how Strikeforce is developing prospects. Besides Woodley, Cavalcante, and Kerry Vera to an extent, Breen has a problem that Strikeforce is putting fighters on this card that will more than likely end up being tune up fights for legit prospects. Pretty much, for all the prospects that Strikeforce has signed or is able to sign, they are not developing them correctly, and giving fights to some fighters that just won’t go very far (Erik Apple was Breen’s example). They should use the Challengers Series for the Tim Kennedy’s, Luke Rockhold’s, Tyrone Woodley’s, Sarah Kaufman’s, who are legit prospects that have the potential to really get up the ranks and not these other fighters who most likely won’t.

by chrisbboy82 on Nov 20, 2009 10:53 AM EST reply actions

How are they supposed to fill cards then?

http://www.fourouncestofreedom.com

by Tim Burke on Nov 20, 2009 11:09 AM EST up reply actions

I think that what Breen expects is to have the legit prospects on the main cards (I don’t know about the undercard, but he wants to see only legit prospects on the main card). His thing is that since Strikeforce is the number 2 MMA promotion in North America, they shouldn’t have to get these regional talents to fill the card all the time anymore. Strikeforce does in fact have a pretty big roster with a good amount of legit prospects, so I can see Breen’s argument here.

by chrisbboy82 on Nov 20, 2009 11:14 AM EST up reply actions

That's odd...

Woodley is a legit prospect and Bears seems like a reasonable step up for him.

Apple seems like he’s being handled correctly.

Feijao is facing a legitimate threat in Rosa…especially considering he is coming off a loss.

They have to build up the prospects a bit and you don’t do that in prospect v. prospect bouts where one of them gets knocked out.

by Brent Brookhouse on Nov 20, 2009 11:31 AM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Exactly...

What i was thinking. First, you have to build prospects, which is what they are doing. If that wasn’t the case, Woodley wouldn’t be headlining this event over Couture vs Vera.

by MMASuPreMaCy on Nov 20, 2009 1:55 PM EST up reply actions

I'm sorry that my explanation was incomplete

I don’t think that Breen wanted prospect vs prospect, and he even mentioned that Woodley vs Bears is a step up for Woodley, but I think that he wants MORE fights like Woodley vs Bears where there is authentic prospect building. I believe that he wants less fights on the main card of an event like this that aren’t building prospects at all. To paraphrase his words: “Strikeforce builds up the CHUM to eventually be fed to the SHARKS too many times.” Just listen to his show and he’ll explain his stance (which I tend to agree with) MUCH better than I can.

by chrisbboy82 on Nov 21, 2009 4:44 AM EST up reply actions

There is something to be said for filling their big cards, but wouldn’t this have been a better opportunity to televise the Coenen fight? She is getting the next title shot and basically nobody knows her?

by BJJDenver on Nov 20, 2009 11:39 AM EST up reply actions

I’d say TV doesn’t work that way. Just because it’s Strikeforce fights, doesn’t mean they can tell Showtime or CBS what to air. Or for that matter, air CBS stuff on Showtime, even though it’s the same production company.

Sure it’d be nice to see the Coenen fight, but I think everyone blames Strikeforce for a lot of the stuff that’s up to the network.

by allelbows on Nov 20, 2009 12:29 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Cant argue with that, as I know for a fact that Showtime has gone so far as to mess up contract negotiations for fights.

by BJJDenver on Nov 20, 2009 1:49 PM EST up reply actions

well then strikeforce, cbs, and showtime should be used interchangeably. One or all of them is responsible for the Coenen fight not being on TV, and that’s just a bad decision, no matter who made it.

If she’s going to be fighting Cyborg next, and they have any hope or prayer of carrying some of the gina effect over to Cyborg, they need to give people the opportunity to see her opponents.

by Phildo on Nov 20, 2009 2:13 PM EST up reply actions

It seems kind of ridiculous to put Coenen vs Cyborg and not even showcase in anyway Coenen. I can’t even find the Coenen vs Modafferi fight on the internet. Honestly, it is just going to look like some utterly random female fighter vs Cyborg.
