Dana White: "Brock Lesnar Had a Hole in His Intestine"

Dan Wetzel of Yahoo gets the story direct from Dana:

White cautioned that things could still go either way. He could fight. He could not. No one knows at this point. Lesnar was resting Wednesday at his home in Alexandria, Minn. and was scheduled to visit the famed Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. early next week for a battery of tests.

"He had a hole in his intestine," White said. "The (stuff) was leaking into his stomach. That's what was causing him so much pain. That and he had abscesses.

"The doctor told him he hasn't been right for a year. His immune system has been trying to fight this thing and that's why he was susceptible to getting sick."

That likely explains Lesnar’s original diagnosis of mono. He had been weakened to the point that he was unable to train for the Carwin fight for much of October. That prompted the original delay in the fight. Then last week, the intestinal problem flamed up and Lesnar was hospitalized.

I'm glad details are emerging so we can cut back a bit on the speculation.

Best wishes to Brock Lesnar and his family from the Bloody Elbow team and all our hopes for a speedy and full recovery.

Wouldn’t it be Frank Mir with a hole in his intestines then?

by grein on Nov 19, 2009 6:51 AM EST up reply actions

It was still a good joke.

But you’re right. Maybe Brock and Frank are like Terrance and Philip, and they share certain portions of anatomy with each other.

Wow that sounds REALLY painfull

Hope he feels alot better soon.

Maybe it was from all of that Coors light

by MSEMCEE on Nov 18, 2009 11:23 PM EST reply actions

Wish him all the best for a full recovery.

So he has had a comprised immune system for the past year while ignoring this. Does that mean he hasn’t been at full strength for the past year?

Just BE.

by mattman73 on Nov 18, 2009 11:31 PM EST reply actions

but don’t all you marks understand??? He’s faking all this so they can build up his return!!!! It’s just like when Hulk Hogan was injured before WrestleMania and they said he’d never fight again!!!!

/wrestling geek rant.

by andherewego on Nov 18, 2009 11:33 PM EST reply actions

Wait,

So Lesnar has had a hole in his intestine for over a year? Like this year? Like when he absolutely destroyed MUR? This man is indestructible. Except for kneebars of course.

by hlebtasic on Nov 18, 2009 11:35 PM EST reply actions

So if he recovers next year he will be significantly healthier and stronger?

That is a scary thought

Giving Shogun his props. I had the fight 48-47 Machida but Shogun put up a monumental performance and I am honored to have seen it in person.

Not so Fast

Look, I love Dana and wish Brock the best. But Dana is not Brock’s Doctor and the shifting nature of this story should make everyone skeptical of anything being released at this point.

by JonathanSnowden on Nov 18, 2009 11:42 PM EST reply actions   1 recs

Dana may not be Brock’s doctor but if he heard this from Brock’s doctor why wouldn’t we believe it? Dana did visit him at the hospital.

by ufc4 on Nov 18, 2009 11:47 PM EST up reply actions

This is the same Dana who one day says Fedor wouldn’t be top 10 HW in the UFC, while the next day offers him millions upon gazillions of dollars. In other words, take everything Dana says with a large grain of salt. More like a boulder of salt.

by neyvit on Nov 18, 2009 11:58 PM EST up reply actions

That’s two completely different situations. Lying about a guy who is outside of your organization and lying about a guy who is probably your most important fighter and who has a very serious medical condition is not the same.

They are the same, when you consider the rule to be Do what benefits the UFC most.

Because god knows Dana can never be a real person, he is just 100% business looking out for the bottom line 24/7, right?

by ufc4 on Nov 19, 2009 12:38 AM EST up reply actions

Get everyone worried he’ll never fight again and it’ll make a great pre-fight hype angle, especially when you consider that Brock’s appeal spans far beyond even the casual mma fan base.

You can be human and still be looking out for your next angle. Dana is a business man first when it comes to the public, but it doesn’t mean he can’t be a friend first to those closer to him in life.

Rampage’s rampage anyone?

by Razreshat on Nov 19, 2009 8:10 AM EST up reply actions

How about paying all of Corey Hill’s medical expenses when he broke his leg at fight for the troops?

by ufc4 on Nov 19, 2009 8:17 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Listen, I’m not saying that all he does is lie. But the evidence shows that he does whatever it takes to promote the UFC. The example of Rampage’s rampage is perfect evidence of that. Do you really think he cared about Rampage’s legal troubles, or more that he cared about the UFC belt-holder ending up in jail?

Sure, he can be a good person. But theres plenty of evidence to show the obvious as well.

by neyvit on Nov 19, 2009 9:16 AM EST up reply actions

I'm sure it's some of both

Dana has shown that he’s willing to go above and beyond mere UFC interests to help out fighters who have been loyal company guys. I have no doubt that as a businessman he sees the potential PR angles at the same time, but to imply that he’s just a heartless profiteer looking to put a spin on everything is a bit much I think.

There is zero chance that Brock’s doctor told Dana anything about his condition, unless he is a doctor that loves being sued. As someone with four doctors and three trial lawyers in the family, I assure you those kind don’t exist!

Thanksgiving in the Snowden household is probably a lot of fun. Or maybe I just think that because I recently re-watched my Scrubs DVDs.

I don’t see anywhere in that quote that indicates Brock’s doctor told Dana anything. It looks like Dana is talked to people who talked to people who knew what the diagnosis was and what was going on..and he’s just passing it along in his own words.

by The_Gaijin on Nov 19, 2009 2:54 PM EST up reply actions

Dana definitely lies all the time, but I’m not sure why everyone is jumping on him about this one.

Brock’s chiropractor is also saying it might be career ending.

I think a more likely explanation for the numerous different stories, diagnoses, and thoughts about brock’s future is that no one has a clue what is going on. That’s what tends to happen when there is a weird medical situation.

by Phildo on Nov 19, 2009 12:37 AM EST up reply actions

The day I believe that Brock’s chiropractor is capable of making a medical diagnosis relating to his health regarding the intestinal disorder, will be the day I believe that witch doctor is capable of fixing his spine too.

I am the bastard love child of Junie Browning and Diamond Dave Kaplan.

by The_Gaijin on Nov 19, 2009 2:56 PM EST up reply actions

I wasn’t implying that he has any medical knowledge, just saying that someone else close to brock is saying the same thing.

Acting like Dana is the spawn of Satan because of the way he’s handling a situation where it seems like no one knows what is going on is a bit much for me.

by Phildo on Nov 19, 2009 4:43 PM EST up reply actions

Sorry that was more just a rant on chiropractors than anything. I have a few buddies that went through to do that after undergrad and read some of their materials and listened to the way they talk like they’re miracle workers….

What causes abscesses and intestinal holes?

Is it random, or hereditary, or is it related to lifestyle, the sport, diet, drug use?

Any medical doctors or bio students on Bloody Elbow?

If he has bowel resection surgery—which is what I’d prescribe as an excavation contractor—the recovery will be really tough.

This is where the bad part of the intestine is removed and the free ends are spliced. Apparently the side effect is that your body has to learn to reprocess food again and you have diarrhea all the time.

I can only assume this dude stays as large as he does by consuming mass quantities.

Either way, I’m assuming he’ll lose a lot of weight. Again, I’m in no way qualified to report on this. Thank you.

If they only took out a few inches of his large intestines then he probably won’t lose that much weight in the long term (although being bedridden for a long time will shrink him down). If it was more than that or if it was from his small intestine I have no idea.

by Chromium on Nov 19, 2009 2:42 AM EST up reply actions

I’m being serious but I don’t think they have the capability to take out a few inches. I know for other issues in that area the doctors hack the shit out of you taking away large portions of the intestines.

Hmm, not sure how to take this ;)

But no, I’m an RN and have stood in on quite a few abdominal surgeries while following patients at trauma centers in school. And I’ve also worked with people who have recently had surgeries like this one.

It’s kind of amazing that there aren’t more qualified people here to discuss this type of thing, but I’m happy to lend whatever knowledge I have to the group.

I believe. He’s in quite good hands.

by spectaa on Nov 19, 2009 10:48 AM EST up reply actions

Nope

He was hospitalized in Canada. Then sent to a medical center in Minn. (not the Mayo Clinic). Surgery was performed at the medical center. He was hospitalized for 11 days. This started long before Dana reported it. There is a possibility there may not even be Mono involved in his illness. It could have been a misdiagnoses from the original intestinal disorder.

He will go to the Mayo Clinic early next week for additional observation and analysis. He may have to undergo further treatment or surgery.

Ah, thanks for the clarification.

It almost doesn’t matter where he was hospitalized, as long as they got the diagnosis correct and dealt with all of the active processes.

I wouldn’t totally rule out mono, though. It’s quite opportunistic, and a perforated colon would pretty much wipe out your immunological capabilities in short order.

I still question all of this when it is coming from a promoter. Who is to say that it is all lies intended to boost the hype for the next fight. “Lesnar……back from the brink of death to fight his toughest opponent!!!”……and post fight its the most incredible against the odds comeback story ever or there is an excuse for the loss. Maybe its all true…….but enough fluff comes from Danas mouth that I take everything with a grain of salt.
