Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Georges St-Pierre talks about being a role model for younger fans, his methodical approach to fights, a move to middleweight to fight Anderson Silva and what he thinks of Paul "Semtex" Daley.

"When I retire I want to be known as the best fighter in the sport of MMA, pound-for-pound, of all time and I want to be known as the guy who made the difference. Not only in the Octagon but as a spokesperson. To do that I’ve got to beat some of the beat some of the best guys in the sport and of course Silva is one of them, BJ Penn was one of them. But, this fight is not written in stone in that one of us can lose [a] fight and if one of us lose a fight then the interest for it will diminish considerably."

I haven't watched the video yet

Since this work PC has no speakers, but why the random question about Paul “Semtex” Daley? What association does he have to GSP (Besides being a WW)?

They’re in the UK, he’s a WW and they’re talking to the WW Champion… Does there need to be much else? lol

I'm the kind of girl who loves to watch a GOOD fight!

it’s actually an interesting interview, talks about his personal philosophies and view of the sport.

Interesting?

I don’t want to say that controversy is the only way to build interest, but if you take the safest, most positive answer you can think of to any question. that’s what you get from GSP.

i enjoy hearing him speak, even if it is ‘safe.’ he says what he feels and if that’s gonna sound corny and too positive, i’m fine with that.

Yeah, I got nothing against what GSP says or how he choses to answer questions. There are plenty of other fighters that have their own routine when it comes to the press, and other fighters that like to trash talk or say controversial things. I enjoy that too, but GSP is clean and good for the sport. You have to have someone to balance out Brock Lesnar, you know?

I love me some Sexyama!

Agreed...

….GSP is interesting in that he indicates due to the fact that MMA is now "cool’ to a young and influential audience he would liek to be a good role model (speak intelligently, avoid covering every inch of skin with tattoos, be a true mixed martial artist and not just a fighter, etc)….

That’s not remotely all inclusive of GSP’s interviews here. He’s diplomatic as always, which for some may be “boring” or “safe”, but he gives an interesting perspective on why he trains like he does, and how he fights like he does.

by Hardcharger on Nov 18, 2009 3:31 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, he trains like he does because he “likes martial arts.” FASCINATING.

That’s a simpleton’s viewpoint, and you can feel free to corner the market on that. GSP’s methods are interesting for anyone who cares to know more about how a #1 fighter assembles his skills and then puts them together. He definitely has different methods than most guys, and he doesn’t keep his training a secret.

And none of that is discussed here.

This is a fluff interview. Pretending that it contains some kind of profound words of wisdom is only going to impress those who don’t take the time to watch the interview.
