Vitor Belfort vs. Anderson Silva at UFC 109
MMA Junkie with the story on the already once postponed fight:
The highly anticipated UFC middleweight title fight between current champ Anderson Silva and explosive challenger Vitor Belfort is now targeted for UFC 109.
The UFC had originally hoped to feature the contest at UFC 108, but Silva's recovery process from elbow surgery forced a delay in the schedule.
Belfort first released news of the new date to the Portugese-language Terra magazine's "Mano a Mano" blog, and MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) has since confirmed with sources close to the bout that verbal agreements are in place. Bout agreements have yet to be signed.
The bout is also contingent upon Silva's recovery process.
Most of the time verbal agreements are enough to make me pretty confident that a fight will take place but with Anderson Silva's issues lately and the last line reminding us that it all hinges on his elbow it's hard to call this fight a lock for 109.
Then again, with Marquardt/Sonnen looking like it is going to happen and Dan Henderson out of the mix for the time being, Anderson is going to have to take a fight with somebody at some point. Let's hope his elbow allows it to happen.

“It all hinges on his elbow” Nicely done. Hope this gets locked down soon. The UFC needs to get some big fights coming.

Soares and his doctors are going to change their mind any day now. They’ll come up with some song and dance about Anderson needing a surgery on his elbow – the other elbow.

This fight in my opinion has lost some of its steam. Belfort TKOed Franklin back in September, and Anderson dismantled Griffin back in early August. The turnaround isn’t too bad especially since most champions generally only fight twice a year (there are exceptions obviously), but I have to wonder if MMA fans will remember those knock outs. However, come fight time, I can imagine the UFC marketing machine making us remember those knock outs over and over again.
Plus the library of KOs
they can cart out for Vitor. It may be a lot of old footage, but they could put together an entire Unleashed episode of Vitor highlights.
This is just nuts! Vitor hasn’t even fought @ 185 in the UFC yet! Why should he get to cut in line in front of Okami! On top of that Hendo beat Vito back in ’06!
for all intents and purposes, just consider all my posts as works of satire.
Okami lost… recently, he’s out of the title hunt.

Even with his recent loss, Okami has acomplished more in the UFC’s 185 division than Vitor. Now Vitor has accomplished a lot in the UFC but not at 185 yet.

Vitor is on a five fight winning streak, although only one is in the UFC and not all of them are at 185. I can see where you are coming from, I myself however do not mind seeing someone who hasn’t been fighting at a certain weight class and for a certain organization getting a title shot, as long as they are deserving of a title shot, which I think Vitor is.

Although not recent
there has been a history of fighters getting a shot at the UFC title without ever actually having been in the UFC octagon before. Of course, there have been more recent fighters, such as BJ Penn, that change weight classes and get an immediate title shot based on their past performance in other weight classes. It may upset some people, but it’s not unprecedented.
I agree, the UFC in general will give out title shots more times on marketability instead of someone deserving it (although many times it could be both). In Vitor’s case however, I think he is indeed deserving of the title shot, as I see the rest of the division already beaten by Andy.

So I guess you think if the UFC ever signs Fedor he needs to put up a few W’s against the likes of Stefan Struve and Ben Rothwell before he gets a title shot?

Okami:
A) couldn’t stay healthy
B) just lost
You move pretty far toward the back of the line when you lose to someone who isn’t the champion.

so much hate for Andy’s elbow, the guy is one of the most active champions, if he says he’s got elbow issues, I don’t see the reason to doubt him. We should be mad at Soares for miscommunications, not anderson himself.

Yeah, cuz I’m sure Anderson has nothing to do with any of it.

yeah, his elbow does, and since his elbow is part of Anderson, Anderson has something to do with it.

Ed Soares gonna be Ed Soares
and this is exactly what he is known to do. Although he’s not NEARLY as bad, he is the closest equivalent MMA has to Don King.
Just a Theory....
Dana finally showing signs of Panic as all of his marketable headliners are going down like flies, he finally bucks up and throws enough extra money at Anderson to get him in the octagon at 109. Maybe some movement on Hendersona nd Ranpage are coming next?

I wouldn’t call it panic, but I’m sure the UFC brass is considering all options.

This fight makes sense
Silva wants a tough competiter and Belfort is just that. I am interested to see what happens. Whether Silva follows through who knows? But Belfort is deserving of a title shot because of what he did to Franklin alone. He is also new blood and more marketable then a rematch with someone Silva beat already. And oh ya Okami sux and is far from a title shot. Belfort vs Okami would be really bad for Okami.
ha!
the day Silva is scared is the day Kimbo becomes HW champ, hell would have indeed have frozen over. the Maia’s were right, just wait three more years.. you’ll see!

I wonder what Kendall’s gonna help him with? Being positionally controlled in the cage or how to steal nicknames?

Who better to get to prepare for “The Spider” than “Da Spyda”? It’s like the same person, but less letters to describe them. A lot more efficient.
Vitor is crazy...
he’s going to use this

to get ready for this…

I am a big Vitor fan but...
Both have great boxing but Anderson has better reach and head movement….but should still be exciting b/c Vitor’s hands are so fricking fast he maybe able to catch anderson with a counter
Stylistically this is loosely like Ali v Tyson. Silva is more fluid, elusive speed and Vitor has more powerful explosive speed.
Before I get flamed for comparing them to Ali and Tyson, I was just using them since they’re the most recognizable to prove my point when comparing Anderson’s striking to Vitor’s. I am not comparing Ali’s to Anderson’s and Tyson’s to Vitor’s
