Josh Barnett made a rare appearance in a gi to take on Romulo Barral at the California Classic BJJ tournament last Sunday.
Barral won via points, but it certainly seems like Barnett caused some serious damage with his leglock attempts.

It’s disrespectful of Barnett to wear a black belt, yes he’s certainly of athletic/technical level to have attained a black belt if he went through the normal process, but to just put one on with a gi is very very disrespectful. They should have given him a competitor marking belt and that’s it.

i agree, but barnett did just win the black belt division at the no gi worlds.
I think it would be much worse if he showed up in a white belt and beat some BJJ rookie at the same tourney.

He should wear the belt he was earned, not what he feels he is. That said, I don’t know if he’s a Black Belt in BJJ or not, but if he isn’t, he shouldn’t wear it.

He isn’t a BB in BJJ, his instructor is, but Barnett himself has never been awarded a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

I agree he shouldn’t be in a lower division, but assign him the green and yellow marking belt instead of having him wear a black belt. I don’t mind he competed in the black belt division, I just mind that he wore the belt from a symbolic perspective.

Also BreakPoint Gi’s (what Barnett is wearing) are ugly as sin.

What is Barnett in BJJ?
I would assume he doesnt even train in the gi and he is strictly a nogi/catch wrestler.

With all the shit Barnett talks about BJJ and the superiority of Catch
I don’t think he’s anything in BJJ, and doesn’t really train in the gi at all.
But as AboveThisFire mentions, in terms of his technical skills and abilities, he’s very likely at black belt level.

He talks shit, but him, Erik Paulson, and Greg Nelson have basically merged catch and bjj. Bjj is used in defensive, less dominant and catch in the reverse.
