Brock Lesnar's Mystery Ailment Revealed to Be Intestinal Infection

The speculation can come to an end.  According to Sherdog, Lesnar's infamous illness is a bacterial infection of his intestinal tract.  From the story:

Brock Lesnar is being treated in an unidentified hospital for a bacterial infection in his intestinal tract, UFC President Dana White told the Associated Press on Monday.

"He's in stable condition and should be released soon," said White.

...

When asked if Lesnar would fight again, White told the Associated press that, "It depends on how serious this is."

Cursory research provides the following.  Bacterial gastroenteritis generally improves with replacement of fluids within a week, though "rare cases of kidney failure or death" have been reported.  The infection can be caused by E. Coli, but Medicenet.com states "Enterocolitis caused by the bacterium Clostridium difficile is unusual because it often is caused by antibiotic treatment...Unfortunately, infection also is increasing among individuals who have neither taken antibiotics or been in the hospital."

Antibiotic's are not used to treat mono on its own, but if Lesnar had another illness like strep throat, he would have been prescribed them.

I’d be looking for an episode coming in the next season that has a story line similar to this. “Disclaimer: Any similarities to actual events is purely coincidental”

They should have that disclaimer every time Jerry Millen speaks.

Main Stream?

From what I say it was either USAToday or the AP who broke the story on the condition. Not everyday that the “traditional” media outlets scoops the MMA press (Sherdog, MMA Weekly, Yahoo, etc) on a story. can’t be a bad thing.

BTW – The Mayo Clinic in Minnesota was recently rated at the top hospital worldwide for Intestinal Disorders. Hopefully Lesnar takes DW’s advice and has a speedy recovery.

I thought USAT got is from Sherdog

by ufc4 on Nov 17, 2009 9:12 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

The original report came from the Associated Press. They (and a lot of other MMA outlets) had the story at least two hours before Sherdog posted it.

USA Today had it first. The AP rewrote USA Today’s story. The MMA press is picking up the AP story that originated in by-lined USA Today story last night that included an interview from Dana White.

To be fair, I saw a link to the USAToday article first in the comments section here on BE late last night, so BE broke the story for me. But the mere fact that it is running on ESPN’s crawl and USAToday got the first comment from DW on exactly what it is shows how mainstream the sport already is.

WCCO television has reported it is diverticulitis.

WCCO television, in Minneapolis has reported it is diverticulitis.

From Dave Meltzer:

Treatment includes no solid food and to only be fed through an IV, plus aggressive antibiotic treatment and in its most severe cases, like this one, can require surgery to remove the area of the colon infected. Surgery is usually frowned upon unless it’s a very severe case. After surgery, Lesnar will likely be placed on a low fiber diet at first.

by Lynchman on Nov 17, 2009 6:54 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Pretty sure Lesnar would not have any issue going to Mayo being a Minnesota resident. The diagnosis just doesn’t seem to fit with facing possibility to never compete again. I could see if they still have to do surgery and his kidneys or a major portion of his intestine being removed.

Perhaps the reports about Brock’s career being in jeopardy might have been based on incomplete and inaccurate information.

I mean, we know for sure that the guy has the flu H1N1 mono intestinal troubles Crohn’s disease diverticulitis a bacterial infection!

And it’s not like anything in the mainstream press is ever reported inaccurately, especially since these articles are still sourcing Dana who fed us all the previous bullshit information!

But Dana White said it. How could it be incomplete or inaccurate? He’s always so careful about what he says.

The kidneys???

What does that have to do with his intestines? I doubt that we are getting the full story so it’s all speculation from here. I mean for Dana to say that he may never fight again is pretty seroius so a bacterial infection doesn’t explain that. I kow that they can f you up, but not keep you out of the fight game for life. WAR: Bacterial infection

I don’t think that’s true. My brother-in-law was hospitalized with an intestinal infection and for a little while we didn’t know if he was going to make it. It was extremely threatening and his life permanently changed because of it.

Mononucleosis is often treated with Prednisone

which is a steroid. I wonder what the deal is for professional athletes and the use of particular steroids to treat illnesses. Maybe he wasn’t treating his illness at all. Also, I’ve been misdiagnosed before with one illness while actually having two. Treating only one can let the other kind of go wild on you. Not saying any of this is what happened, but first we heard he had mono, and getting that along with something else is a pretty tough combo.

by Albertrayon on Nov 17, 2009 9:34 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Steroiods

Those kind of steroids don’t elevate your test.

Even if you do test positive

and you have a script for something like Mono, they will accept that…. well the NCAA did for me and they are a lot tougher than most professional commissions.

by ufc4 on Nov 17, 2009 10:56 AM EST via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

There's steriods in the PED sense

and then steroids in the biological sense, referring to the stuff that’s in your body right now.

As long as it’s not a PED, he should be fine

Don't underestimate Dana

This whole career threatening part of the story could be spin. It might be a 2% chance that Brock doesn’t compete but by Dana throwing it out there Brock’s illness becomes major news. AOL still has Brock listed as a “hot search”. Not saying Dana is evil or anything just pointing out that people seem to forget he is a promoter.

by andrewsj7 on Nov 17, 2009 9:43 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

From a business standpoint

It’s a great strategy. Now the next Countdown that features Lesnar will tell how he “almost didn’t fight again” and how he “overcame”.

The facts of the story are changing

Shouldn’t your opinion change as the facts change?

Look, my reaction to this story has NOTHING to do with how I feel about Brock. Look back at what I’ve written about this and show me something (outside of a lame joke like the one I made about avian flu insinuating that Brock was too chicken to fight Carwin cause that was just too easy to pass up) that is influenced by my feelings about Brock. PLEASE.

My problem has been with the fan reaction INCLUDING the MMA-blog-o-media. For weeks now we’ve had NOTHING but bullshit coming from people like Dana and Shane that all of it – every last bit – turned out to be bullshit. Now we finally have Greg Nelson from his camp making a statement, and I’m willing to treat that as fact. Aren’t you?

Get a clue or have a heart

Sorry, but DW isn’t the evil genius who overplays a medical situation that doctors couldn’t diagnose just for the sake of hyping a fight that is at least 6 months out. DW was slow with details about the illness because the doctors didn’t know what it was and Brock asked him to respect his privacy. No I didn’t hear Brock say to respect his privacy directly, but it sure sounds like the Brock I have seen in interviews.

DW handled this particular situation with class and dignity. Despite what you may feel about how he has handled other situations, this is one time that DW shouldn’t be thrown under the bus for being a promoter.

by pwrcartel on Nov 17, 2009 10:54 AM EST up reply actions   2 recs

Give me a break. DW didn’t have to say anything but “He’s really sick, they’re unsure what it is and we really hope he gets better soon.”

Instead he drops a nugget that he knows will get exposure, “he may never fight again.” You say that Brock wants his privacy respected… you think he wanted DW saying he may never fight again?

People are acting like DW is the model of altruism for wanting him to go to the Mayo Clinic… Brock is friggin cash cow, of course he wants him treated at the best hospital.

DW knows exactly what he’s doing.

Personally I consider being vague about reporting one of my employees developing a condition which causes multiple-hour bowel movements to be the better part of valor. You call it hype/promoter angle, I call it dignified.

Intestinal Infections are No Joke

A lot of the time they are caused by a tear in the intestinal lining which is the body’s equivalent to a sewer main breaking and flooding a busy street.

I was in the hospital for 2 weeks because of one my spoh year of college. My intestines swelled shut and any solid food I ate came right back up. I was on a liquid diet for a month and a half. After a while I didnt even want to eat because it hurt so bad so I just forgot about it. The pain is equivalent to being stabbed (Ive only been stabbed once, in the leg, accidentally by a piece of broken mirror, 4" through my calf but same thing.) Spent the entire time in a fetal position.

They gave me antibiotics, steroids and morphine. That combined with a liquid diet. Muscle milk actually helped me keep some weight on. I went from competing in a D1 sport at a lean 200 lbs to 160 (160 at 6’6" is gross.) It took 6 months to put the weight back on correctly because I had lost a lot of muscle mass. Over a year until I was back to where I wanted to be.

If Brock’s condition is anything like mine was, it will be a while before we see him again. If he rushes into a fight after this it will be akin to Nog-Mir. I wish him the best and a speedy recovery.

by ryanwk628 on Nov 17, 2009 10:02 AM EST reply actions   1 recs

that sounds horrible

on a related note. Mir/nog had little to do with nog’s physical condition and much more to do with frank mir’s ELITE LEVEL MUAY THAI.
