News is that the UFC has banned Clinch Gear (Dan Henderson's MMA Clothing line) after UFC 105. There was a good amount of Clinch Gear shown throughout the CBS Strikeforce broadcast, but most likely this is the byproduct of failed negotiations between Dan Henderson and the UFC.

There is also a strong rumor that the UFC has banned RVCA after they sponsored Fedor and appeared on the CBS Strikeforce card as well, though the brand has close ties with BJ Penn, so it would definitely be an interesting scenario if the rumor is true.

Update: a well-placed source within the mma apparel industry indicates that they have heard the same as well, regarding RVCA. Will keep you guys updated.

sigh

Why do you post that Gross says Clinch Gear is banned from the UFC while also saying that there’s a strong chance that RVCA may be banned when Gross responded to you in the same Twitter post that he thought it wasn’t true.

I was wondering the same thing- why take his word on one and not on the other? Because the UFC banning sponsors makes them look bad which is his agenda.

@MMASupremacy I don’t believe that to be true. BJ Penn is tight with RVCA. Clinch Gear, however, was banned after UFC 105.

I hope everyone read MMAWrestling’s quote above. I got a response saying that its true, though, Josh Gross didn’t think so at the time since he wasn’t sure.

Which part is disgusting? You can’t fault a business for banning a sponsor which is owned by a fighter who is no longer fighting for your business.

Also paying the UFC to sponsor a fighter makes sense to me as well. They were getting free advertising. Asking for 100k doesn’t seem like a huge problem to me.

by thisredengine on Nov 17, 2009 12:05 PM EST up reply actions

I should clarify…

1) if they banned RVCA for sponsoring Fedor…that’s weak.

2) If they went back on the $100k thing with Clinch Gear and just outright banned them…also weak

See, the thing is…every time the fighter pay thing comes up everyone goes “well…you have sponsorship which pays a large percentage of their overall income” and then when these companies are banned from sponsoring in the UFC it quickly turns to “well…they have the right to not allow people to sponsor on their shows” and while it may be true that they have that right…one statement doesn’t work well with the other.

Oh I’m not talking about fighter pay, this is clearly a power play to negatively affect Dan Henderson’s outside business. But at the same time I completely understand.

Banning RVCA for sponsoring Fedor is ridiculous. With Belfort and Penn as top fighters they sponsor, you’re kicking your stars in the dick.

But with clinch, I understand.

Also, with the 100k, all I’m saying is that I understand why they started charging for sponsorships. I don’t want to talk about fighter pay as you get people who don’t understand basic economics/finance saying you should pay “Dan Henderson more cause he’s a legend” with complete disregard for things like PPV draw and overall how it will impact a business.

sucks that Vitor and BJ are gonna have to look for new sponsors now...

(not that I think they’d have trouble doing so)

I thought as long as sponsers paided a fee I think it was 100,000.Then the UFC would allow them to sponser who ever they want so they could stop all the banning of sponsers

The UFC has to approve them and then get 100K.

Its a shock that all sponsors except Tapout have not been banned.

If true, how can the UFC do this? Clinch Gear is a HUGE sponsor. I understand it’s Dan’s clothing line but damn… its like the UFC is trying to twist Dan’s arm into signing because if he doesn’t all the fighters sponsored by CG in the UFC will take a big hit.

You can argue that this is good business for the UFC but it is more a douche bag move than anything else.

yep, i think it's to prove a point that the UFC is where he gets his money.

and no other promotion can give that to him..

Well

Clinch Gear did have some nice air time on CBS just the other day in front of millions.
=)

Clinch Gear on CBS for 1 night =/= clinch gear on every UFC card. Unless CBS gave an ad spot to clinch gear during every hour, it’s not even comparable.

by thisredengine on Nov 17, 2009 2:15 PM EST up reply actions

Clinch Gear is NOT guaranteed on every UFC card unless they have a sponsored fighter fighting on the televised portion. Though, if Hendo signs with Strikeforce, you can bet he will be on a CBS show and Clinch Gear would get a LOT of air time on national TV.

RVCA and Clinch Gear have become the two latest additions to the UFC’s sponsorship blacklist, it was confirmed today. The bannings were the subject of much discussion among industry insiders at the weekend’s UFC 105 event, but were not confirmed until today.

RVCA has attracted the ire of the UFC by sponsoring Fedor Emelianenko for his fight with Brett Rogers on the recent Strikeforce/CBS show. As a long-time sponsor of lightweight champion BJ Penn, the brand is a familiar one with UFC fans.

Clinch Gear has been banned from the Octagon for obvious reasons. The brand is Dan Henderson’s own clothing line and as the UFC and he are no longer seeing eye to eye, the label is not welcome in the cage. Relations between UFC president Dana White and Henderson have apparently been cordial during negotiations but this latest move may upset the former Pride double-champion.
