Shane Carwin Did NOT Have Surgery, Will Be Available After UFC 108
Heavy.com reports:
Recently published reports indicated that Carwin had undergone knee surgery to fix an ailing knee while waiting for Brock Lesnar to recuperate from his bout with mononucleosis. Carwin did undergo an MRI, which came back as a grade II MCL strain. Carwin was told not to do any grappling for three weeks, which made him unavailable for UFC 108. He is available to fight on any card after UFC 108, but with Brock Lesnar out for an unknown amount of time, Carwin remains in limbo.
This is a relief. The UFC has been utterly cursed recently -- look at this list of announced headlining fights:
- UFC 106 Brock Lesnar vs Shane Carwin
- UFC 107 Rampage Jackson vs Rashad Evans
- UFC 108 Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs Cain Velasquez
Alas, fate and The A-Team movie have intervened.
Hopefully, Carwin and Velasquez will get to have the fight that was originally scheduled for UFC 104. It may very well be for the interim heavyweight title if the reports about Brock Lesnar are true.

Agreed. Presuming he get’s past Gonzaga, I think maybe they give him Mir/Kongo winner then a title shot.

There’s just too many ways people pronounce his name. From now on I’m going with this guy:

How do you pronounce Dostoyevsky’s first name in US? Fyodor, Fedor, or both?
by dancingChicken on Nov 17, 2009 5:20 AM EST up reply actions
Фёдор Емельяненко
In IPA it’s:
fʲɵdər jɪmʲɪlʲˈjanʲɪnkə
but the best English transliteration I’ve found is
Fyodor Yemelyanenko
Or Fedro. Fedro also works.
^^ minus the ending, best description.
Also, Fedor can tell you how to pronounce his name.

I don’t see any way Carwin/Velasquez doesn’t happen. The only question is for an interim title? It’ll be interesting reading between the lines of what DW says the next couple of days; it’s already been speculated his comments about Lesnar are tipping his hand.
We're just a million little gods causin' rain storms, turning every good thing to rust.
I think he already said they may have to do an interim title.
by ufc4 on Nov 16, 2009 10:09 PM EST via mobile up reply actions
It seems hard for me to give these guys the interim title without having to face Mir or Big Nog. Now if Mir loses to Kongo and Nog’s out for an extended period, OK then make it for the belt. Otherwise make it a 4 man tournament with Cain versus Carwin at 109 and a Mir-Nog rematch at 111. Or something like that.

Did not have surgery. I was injured and when Brock pulled out of 108 I got the injury looked at and began rehab. I have a grade 2 MCL Strain

Brock has intestinal bacteria infection
It was just posted on front page ESPN.com (sherdog). Not sure of all the details but at least now we know what it is.
Not a pro wrestling fan but would watch Gorilla and Bobby The Brain with my dad, who hated wrestling. That’s how good they were. Indeed RIP.

What’s funny is I was very familiar with a lot of the wrestlers. Mpls was definitely a big wrestling town. It was almost incestuos how much everyone knew each other. My uncle knew Mad Dog Vochon and Nick Bonkwinkle and all the guys who worked as bouncers before getting big like the Road Warriors. I knew the Baron Raschke’s son. Guys from my dad’s construction crew worked as fall guys for Verne Gagne (my dad turned them down, he had a bad knee). But he wasn’t a wrestling fan. We were definitely an Armory boxing family.

That's awesome
My old man worked at the old civic center where they did NWA shows in the 80’s. I used to get babysat by a lot of the same guys you mentioned, as well as Dino Bravo, etc.

Isn’t crazy how many pro wrestlers there were in the twin cities? I never realized until I left. Another thing I never realized – my dad’s friend was mob boss Yiddy Bloom’s kid and how big a boxing town Minneapolis was. What happened?
by John Nash on Nov 17, 2009 1:34 AM EST via mobile up reply actions
Yeah dude
Minneapolis is huge in all combat sports (included pro wrestling in this term, however unseemly that is). Between the history of pro wrestling (when they worked stiff, legit tough fuckers), pro boxers, collegiate wrestling and now MMA, it’s the cream of the crop here right alongside hockey players.

Sorry, I'm not buying Heavy.com as a legitimate news source
Their “breaking news” comes from unidentified sources and lacks direct quotes. Their Hughes-Gracie at UFC 109 “scoop” was refuted by Gracie. Oh, and they got the location and arena name wrong when they reported from Strikeforce. They’ve got a long way to go before I’m taking their word at face value.
i get your points, but i do like most of their content.. :)

your nitpicking
about them saying Strikeforce happened in Chicago instead of whatever bullshit suburb it happened in. lol.
Gracie has confirmed to a BE staffer that he’ll be fighting Hughes, but its likely not to be his first fight.
Heavy is credible, they are credentialed by the UFC and have access to good sources.
Follow me on Twitter @KidNate
You don’t keep sources long by divulging their information and quoting them directly on breaking news. You’ll notice the same lack of specificity from Meltzer, Junkie, and others.
I’m not sure what your issue is with heavy.com, but Jeremy and I both talk with people in the industry daily. We have a standing policy not to report on something without either a direct source or multiple sources confirming a story. We lose some scoops this way, but we are very careful about what we report.

Who can't wait for Penn-Sanchez now?
In all this terrible news of one big fight after another being canceled, i can’t wait to see these two true studs go at it in December. It might be the last time in a long time that we see a war for a title.
