Rumor: Georges St. Pierre and Dan Hardy Under Consideration for TUF Coaching Gig

Ultimatefighter_mediumThe Telegraph reports that GSP and Dan Hardy are under consideration for a coaching stint on the next season of The Ultimate Fighter.

The telegraph also understands that the UFC may be considering offering coaching places to the pair for the next series of The Ultimate Fighter.

Let me be the first on this website to complain about this.  By the time they fought, that would be a year between welterweight title defenses, or more importantly, a year between GSP fights.  It's one thing to put off a highly anticipated fight for the purpose of the reality show, but entirely another to delay a fight where the outcome is so obvious.

Georges is already back in training, and was looking to return in early March.  We've already seen how delaying a fight for the reality show can turn out to be a disaster, who knows if one of these guys gets injured before July and then it'd be well over a year between GSP fights.

Far be it from me to complain without offering a viable alternative.  If Ortiz loses to Griffin, they should do a season with Tito Ortiz and Mark Coleman.  They will talk a lot of trash, both guys are good TV characters, and neither one is really relevant at light heavyweight at this point.  The ratings will probably be even stronger, and we won't have to spend 7 more months debating a fight very few people are even interested in seeing.

Great idea. Let’s put another champion out of commission for 6 months AFTER he returns from his current injury. As if the UFC weren’t having enough trouble filling cards already.

TUF needs a break, I can’t imagine how shallow the talent pool is going to be next season. Either that or it’s going to be washed-up former UFC vets trying for a way back in.

Of course. I just don’t know who will give him too much trouble. His jiujitsu is too good to be in trouble against Rani. He can do exactly what Cruz did to Benavidez. He already beat Mizugaki when he fought away from his strengths. If he fights smart he wins just about any matchup the WEC can offer him, and the Bowles loss taught him what he needs to fix.

by pdl on Nov 15, 2009 6:59 PM EST up reply actions

ya dont get knocked the fuck out. id figure he knew that already. Bowles hit hard for a guy at 135. Same with Brown at 145. Power like that at lower weight class’s can take a fighter a long way

Oh c’mon.

Torres lost one fight in 3 years. Faber went to a decision against Brown with two broken hands. The idea that it’s just impossible that either man will hold the belt again is just silly.

Personally I like Torres v. Faber as TUF coaches myself. The point of the show should be to help the UFC out, not the the other way around. A relatively low ratings season of the show to help intro two new weightclasses makes sense to me.

The whole thing about GSP just reads as if they realized they can make more money from advertising on Spike with massive Kimbo ratings than they can from just using it as a season-long infomercial for their ppv. Using a superstar, effectively putting them on the shelf for a year might be the only way they can hope to get near the 5million viewer mark again. Unless they make Kimbo a coach next season.

This is not happening…

After John Fitch wins he should coach against Hardy for a real number one contenders match.

Let the winner of Koschek vs Johnson get the title shot… Koschek is the money fight and the only stylistic match up and personality to sell a credible fight against GSP.

If you cant finish swick after hurting him that many times you have no business in the cage with GSP. Hardy has plenty of talent and potential… I believe he can be the best but he’s not the best option at the moment.

While I pretty much agree with Rome here, let’s play devil’s advocate. A GSP-Hardy coached TUF season would have multiple benefits. Here they are in simple-to-read list form.

1. What is now considered a squash match would become much more interesting after watching GSP’s nice guy routine interact with Hardy’s agressive, shit talking personality.

2. GSP would become that much closer to reaching Lesnar-like drawing power after coaching TUF.

3. Hardy would become a superstar in the UK on par with Bisping, and that’s good for everybody involved.

4. Considering GSP has dominated Fitch, Alves, Koscheck, Hughes, Serra, and Penn in his most recent run, the extended time would allow a dominant challenger to emerge for a title shot. As of right now, there are people who GSP has already beaten and people who don’t see ready to step into the cage with the Canadian. The extended layoff would create time to let the division figure itself out.

by dropkick101 on Nov 15, 2009 7:00 PM EST reply actions

but the fight it leads up to would be completely uninteresting. its cooler when you aren’t sure who is gonna take it.

So they are just going to use all of Rashad’s coaching staff again and watch them dominate a different team this time?

TuF should never be for a title fight, especially not one like that. Hardy is going to get a wrestling lesson for 5 rounds like Alves did.

Make the coaching staff Marquardt and Belfort, atleast then it doesnt interfere with GSP, or a title shot, and promotes two interesting fighters and one great contender fight.

I’m not all that jazzed about the idea of GSP fighting Dan Hardy let alone devoting an entire season of TUF to it. I’m pretty sure the fight will look erriely similair to the one against Alves where GSP’s opponent attempts futilely to engage on the feet while being taken down to the ground and pounded on repeatedly. Spending months promoting that seems thoroughly wasteful.

I don’t see this happening. I think it’s infinitely more likely that Chuck Liddell is brought back to coach another season, possibly against Tito.

SHAMROCK VERSUS ORTIZ!!!

for all intents and purposes, just consider all my posts as works of satire.

Lesnar vs Carwin!

Its the UFC’s biggest draw and would give them something to do during the layoff. And the shit talking would be amazing. With a whole season of TUF that fight would do 2 million ppvs with out an under card.

That would actually be quite interesting!!!!

Lesnar vs. Noguera!

Why not? I mean we could call it TUF 11: Infection!

Dan Hardy is the type of guy you can’t help but wish could get mauled by a monster like Thiago Alves.

He’s not very likeable, and seems to think a lot of himself, which is why a viscous beatdown by thiago seems appropriate.

I don’t understand the hard-on UFC still has for holding up a title match for ages because of TUF. Especially since Bisping-Hendo turned out alright. If they still insist on continuing TUF, they should stop insisting on title fights between the coaches. Especially this time around – I don’t think anyone is going to give Hardy a snowball’s chance in hell against GSP. Be kinda hard to build any kind of drama since nobody is going to give the challenger any respect.

Pick a pair of charismatic fighters and have them coach. Ortiz vs Coleman or whoever. Good TV without holding up a title for ages.

Genius and Stupidity

Genius: Dan Hardy has no name recognition. TUF will allow us a long time to get to know him and either love / hate him. This might also give us a chance to actually believe he has a fighters chance which I don’t actually think he does.

Stupidity: Let’s hold up our best fighter on a reality show when he doesn’t speak well and is too nice for good television? Oh wait, we don’t have anyone that can beat him so this buys us time. Hopefully Dan Hardy will leave the show for some 80’s movie remake where someone had a mowhawk.

I've confirmed that this story is not true

I’ve confirmed that this story is not true. St. Pierre and Hardy are not under consideration for the TUF coaching gig.
