UFC 105 Results: Dan Hardy Shines in Win Over Mike Swick

20091114022122_hardy2_mediumAs Forrest Griffin said, there's nothing worse than a cocky guy who can back it up. And back it up Hardy did.

Dan "The Outlaw" Hardy was able to defeat Mike "Quick" Swick in a three round affair, likely earning himself a title shot against current UFC welterweight champion Georges "Rush" St. Pierre at a future date.

The fight started off very even. The first round was a clinch battle, but with more positional jockeying that outright damage. A difficult round to score as both fighters managed to land a few shots and put the other fighter's back against the fence.

Round two, however, was when Hardy began to take over.

A big punch from Hardy wobbled the American Kickboxing Academy welterweight and Hardy followed up. Swick was able to recover and even land a few shots of his own in the round, but never turned the tide or scored enough damage to offset Hardy's punching.

Round three saw Swick landing a nice combination of his own, but to no avail. The Brit eventually landed shots of his won and took Swick down, avoided a weak guillotine attempt and poured on the damage. Even though the referee eventually stood them up, Swick's fate was sealed.

30-27, 30-27 and 29-28 are the official scores of the bout.

I'll say it

I hope Hardy takes out GSP just to shake up the division. I like GSP and he is a hell of a fighter but what would come next if he beats Hardy? Rumble Johnson probably if he beats Koscheck.

But think if Hardy or even Johnson could knock off GSP imagine the possibilities:

Hardy vs. Fitch
Hardy vs. Alves
Hardy vs. Hughes
Hardy vs. Koscheck
Hardy vs. Johnson

or Johnson vs. any of those guys. But seriously I expect GSP to win.

Hardy could've finished Swick easily

If he didn’t try and go for the take down.

Fire Bruce DeHaven.

Hardy impressed with his toughness. Yeesh, that dude is hard to hurt. I wanna see him fight Alves.

But yeah, if he couldn’t finish Swick, he’s definitely got a steep battle on GSP (nothing against Swick of course).

The thing is

he could have finished Swick – he either lacked the killer instinct or didn’t have confidence in himself. He had Swick hurt and wobbly a few times, and instead of pouncing he chose to let him recover.

There’s no such thing as could have. If he could have he would have but he didn’t. Maybe he could next time, but he certainly didn’t last night, and this is assuming that he wanted to finish the fight.

Are you serious?

There’s a reason could and would are two separate words…

There’s no such thing as could have.

Yes there is.
“I could have gone to the store, but instead I chose to go straight home.”
“I could have eaten tuna for lunch, but the baked ziti sounded so much better.”

What a strange thing for someone to argue about.

I assume we’re talking about MMA sports here. I should’ve clarified that because the fact that I said it on a friggin MMA blogsite wasn’t obvious enough for you. So yeah, the context in which you said it, and not “there’s no such thing as could have” in the entire context of it’s existence.

My dad does this hundred push-ups program and he always says things like “I did 45 as my max but I think I could’ve done 46 or 47.” To that I think, "then you should’ve done 47 as your max. Make believe ’could’ve done’ this in hindsight has no weight for me.

But I see what you’re saying, he looked like he was in position to close the deal. Maybe he was too tired, or maybe he was afraid of Swick’s counters, but isn’t it safe to assume that Hardy wanted to finish the fight and was doing everything he could to finish it?

MFing!!!!YESSSS!

However, his only chance against GSP is going to be those hard counter hooks, and I can’t see how he’s going to land enough of them. He’s got better reach than Alves, which might help, but it’s hard to land punches when you’re flying through the air onto your back. Watch for Hardy to do everything he can to subtly irritate Georges and shame him into standing with him, thus offending many of the more sensitive souls around BE, and probably not helping him any in the fight. Even if GSP decides to just kickbox him, I think people forget how powerful and diverse Georges is on his feet. Two of my favorite fighters in a title fight is music to mine ears…

Hardy really impressed me. His striking style is just so awesume! But Pearson impressed me more.
