Will a Win by Brandon Vera Lead to a UFC Event in the Philippines?

The UFC has brought international shows to England, Canada, Germany, Ireland, and in a few months, Australia. Their global expansion isn't likely to end anytime soon, so the question I'd like to ask is, 'where does Zuffa go next?'. Bleacher Report lists possible candidates, and gives the Philippines as one of the prime destinations:

Manila, the Philippines

A place where boxing superstar Manny Pacquaio is a national icon, the Zuffa brass have expressed a desire to bring UFC to the Philippines before, and with good reason. Perhaps the reason Brandon Vera is still around is increasing the attention of MMA to the public's awareness, and should he best Randy Couture on Saturday, we may see a Filipino show all the sooner.

They even have the perfect venue for this - The Araneta Coliseum (Pictured). How fitting would it be, for the grandest stage in all of MMA to be held in front of almost 16,000 Filipino fans, in the same site that hosted one of the biggest fights in history, the "Thrilla in Manila".

Zuffa already had plans to go to the country before. They already have a bunch of Filipino's in their roster such as Brandon Vera, Mark Munoz, Phillipe Nover and Justin Buchholz. Add that to a steady diet of established UFC vets, Asian fighters, a few locals, and maybe even a few quality pick ups like Strikeforce's Shane Del Rosario, and you'd get a pretty solid card. They've successfully set up TV deals, press conferences, and appearances by Brandon Vera, Lorenzo Fertitta, and Chuck Liddell in the past. It already looked like a done deal, until sponsorship problems derailed their attempts and put those plans on hold.

This Saturday, Brandon Vera will be in the biggest fight of his life. A fight that could possibly propel his career into new heights, and one that could make him be a bigger and more established star. This bout is a huge opportunity to advance his career, but it could also be an opportunity for the Filipino fight fans waiting patiently for that first UFC event to finally happen. More interest in Vera, in the UFC, and in MMA, might just be what they needed, in order to jump-start those talks again.

Lots of Filipinos have always thought that the next Manny Pacquiao, the next sporting icon, would come from MMA. And if a victory over a legend like Randy Couture is a step towards that, and a step towards finally bringing the UFC to the Philippines, then it's even more reason for him to seize this opportunity.

Will a win by Brandon Vera lead to a UFC event in the Philippines? The weight certainly doesn't rest solely on his shoulders, but Yes, I think it'd be a huge step towards that goal.

Hell

put Vera, Munoz, and Nover all on the card. That’d be cool as hell. Maybe they could sign that Folayang guy you always talk about.

I think they would do it but not on a regular basis. A show in the Philippines would help cement the fanbase there, but shows outside North America (or let’s just say the Western Hemisphere) would make it unfavorable for North American PPV, plus the cost of flying the production crew and set would be more expensive and they wouldn’t draw anymore gate money than they would in any number of markets in the U.S. and Canada.

If the UFC runs 30 shows a year I see them doing one in the Philippines every other year or so maybe.

I'm not greedy.. Haha.

I’m just asking they do one, and then go from there. If it becomes 1 per year, or two, then so be it.

What would you think of strikeforce possibly putting on a show in the Philippines?

by Dropkick434 on Nov 14, 2009 12:37 PM EST up reply actions

The only problem with this plan is that Fishbob isn’t very good. The best way to handle this would be to have Phillipe Nover legally change his name to “Manny Spacquaio” and have him headline the card.

Sounds like a great Idea

Maybe get Manny Pacquaio to commetate the to broadcast and commentate the Headliner. That might draw some fans

Oy!

What would I have to put in my signature to get you to agree to the “Fishbob” article?

How about having him sing the national anthem?

by ufc4 on Nov 13, 2009 11:19 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Agreed. Manny definitely has no business doing commentary on a UFC card, let alone the headliner. If he was just in attendance, it would be a good thing IMO.

About as likely as this.

Oh they'll go to the Philippines

Right after they hit Brazil, Dubai, Mexico, Korea, some other EU countries and who knows, maybe India will even jump in line.

Srsly, they’ve been promising these exotic locations a show for years now but I just don’t see it happening in the near future. It’s not a profitable venture for Zuffa in my estimation.

Will a Win by Brandon Vera Lead to a UFC Event in the Philippines?

No….the right sponsors will.

by mmalogic on Nov 13, 2009 5:15 PM EST reply actions

Will A win over Randy lead to the right sponsors being interested in making deals with them?

by Anton Tabuena on Nov 14, 2009 12:15 AM EST up reply actions

that is the right question.

by mmalogic on Nov 14, 2009 3:35 AM EST up reply actions

That is actually the main point of my article. :)

I’m hoping, that if he does win, it could lead to more interest, and more interest gets more sponsors.

Hopefully leading into a UFC show in the Phil. It may be a long shot, but getting more interest could lead to better things..

They’ve announced a URCC-UFC partnership, (although I’m not sure about the details).. It could be on something totally unrelated, but maybe they’re leading up to that already?

Nover and Munoz do? Last time I heard Tagalog from them it sounded like such crap.

by Gong on Nov 15, 2009 6:58 PM EST up reply actions

you Filipino?

yes they both do.. I think Munoz speaks better Filipino than Nover.. they all have accents, but that’s normal since they grew up in the US.

Vera lost so the point may be moot, but can they get a live gate of 2+ million?

by bigweeze on Nov 15, 2009 7:45 PM EST reply actions

I doubt it...Unless they raise the prices, but that would also risk having less people come in.

Not much venues can sell that much even in the US.. When going to a foreign country, think fight night or non-ufc profits.. Which is why they need the right (US) sponsors for this..
