UFC 105 Business Perspective: Randy Couture and the UK Stars

Michael-bisping2_mediumUFC 105 kind of snuck up on me, and now we're just two days away from seeing Randy Couture fight on Spike TV.  Because the show is free on Spike, the UFC has done little to advertise it, and it's caught between Fedor Emelianenko's debut on network television and what was once Brock Lesnar's return date.  The three top fights are still very important for the UFC going forward, and for a free show it's very strong.

The main event fight is particularly interesting.  Randy Couture is the biggest star to ever fight in the UK, which helps explain why they are doing so well in the ticket sales department after a number of sluggish showings overseas.  Brandon Vera is probably the most dangerous 205 fighter outside of the top 10, inasmuch as he has the talent and skills to be a top fighter, but it remains to be seen whether he has the heart.

There's a palpable sense of anticipation among the MMA press and fans alike that this show will be Vera's breakout fight.  Randy's lost two in a row, people have raised questions about his chin, and Vera has a dangerous Thai striking game.  Personally, I'm conflicted on what will happen here.  Vera has the quicker path to victory, but his reluctance to pull the trigger against a guy like Krystof Soszynski makes me wonder if he'll freeze when he sees Randy on the other side of the octagon.  I also have doubts about his power at light heavyweight, as he's yet to really drop anyone at this weight class.

Many fans know the two trained together back at the Olympic Training Center, but only Brandon Vera and a select few know how far above Vera's level Couture was in the wrestling department at that time.  Has time narrowed the gap?  We'll see Saturday.

From a business perspective, the UFC desperately wants Couture to win this fight and extend his career, but a spectacular Vera win wouldn't be the worst thing either.  Depending on how long Machida is out with his hand injury, I would not be surprised to see the winner of this fight take on Mauricio "Shogun" Rua, with the winner of that fight facing Machida in May or June.

Michael Bisping and Dan Hardy are both fighting on this card, which is a big deal for the UFC's UK expansion plans.  There is a lot more risk than reward on the line here.  If Bisping and Hardy both get stopped, which is a real possibility, the UFC will have to completely start over with its plans to create British stars.  I have no doubt that members of the UFC UK office will be at ringside hoping and praying Dan Hardy and Michael Bisping pull off victories.

Randy or Vera vs Shogun would be excessively violent.

I kinda wish Vera had a chance to get past Randy so that I could see him get eaten alive by Shogun.

I dislike Matt Hughes. Shogun beat him like a dirty horse.

I think they give the winner of this fight against the winner of Tito/Forrest.

by Anton Tabuena on Nov 12, 2009 7:28 PM EST up reply actions

If its Randy and Tito then that makes a lot of sense. If its Randy and Forrest who knows if they will fight each other.
If Vera wins I could see them trying to move him towards a title shot.

I dislike Matt Hughes. Shogun beat him like a dirty horse.

by MonkeyCHops on Nov 12, 2009 7:32 PM EST up reply actions

I think it's the other way around..

Randy wins, he probably gets the next shot. Of Vera wins, I think they’ll give him Forrest or Tito.

by Anton Tabuena on Nov 12, 2009 7:45 PM EST up reply actions

Its possible, but Randy/Tito is a huge fight that they can main event without having a title on the line. Given their troubles finding good main events, with almost all the champions injured this makes the most sense to me.

I dislike Matt Hughes. Shogun beat him like a dirty horse.

I don’t think Randy is particularly interested in fighting Ortiz.

by Michael Rome on Nov 12, 2009 7:59 PM EST up reply actions

His PPV points are interested in it.

I dislike Matt Hughes. Shogun beat him like a dirty horse.

Who wouldn't be interested in fighting him?

He is a proven draw that is possibly well below his best. Risk/Reward scenario looks incredibly tempting at this point for just about everyone.

Shane Del rosario already won..
Now Pacquiao, and both Vera’s have got to win to make it a great month for Filipino fight fans.. :)

oh and Folayang too. He’ll be taking on an undefeated 5’10 LW from Saipan who has won several grappling tourneys.. Might be the perfect test to see how folayang does against experienced grapplers.. (the guy has good muaythai too, plus he’s tall, but I think Folayang has the edge there)

Pacquiao is probably the only lock there, though I think Brandon should win so long as he doesn’t do what Rome suggested, and that’s to freeze up when he sees Randy.

The biggest Iock among them?

Kerry Vera.. The end..

Cotto is a dangerous guy, and Kim, isn’t anything like Randy.

by Anton Tabuena on Nov 12, 2009 8:31 PM EST up reply actions

That’s true. Though Kim is pretty tenacious.

Cotto

is a beast. I seriously wouldn’t be surprised if Cotto wins.

I don’t think a loss by Couture would hurt any. I think Couture is just one of those guys, win or lose, that people will pay to see. If he loses to Vera here, Couture should go the Hughes path and only take fights that are interesting to him, or big money fights. I might be overstating things, but if he loses to Vera, it’s the end for Couture’s title hopes.

One thing I’ve noticed is a lot of people analyzing this fight are analyzing it as if it’s the Randy from the Nog fight against the Vera from the Mir fight.

It’s been a long time since Vera rocked someone standing. Not to say he won’t rock Randy, but I don’t think he has lethal hands at 205.

by Michael Rome on Nov 12, 2009 8:54 PM EST reply actions

Yeah, Vera doesn’t have it at LHW. Though I still think he’ll win a decision. Granted, I don’t really know how Vera’s wrestling stands up to Couture’s. It’s very possible Couture takes Vera down and just pounds him out. If Werdum could get top control, Couture definitely can. I’m looking at this more from Vera finally getting a fire lit under his butt and Couture losing a step or two. I figure the Vera of old is still in there somewhere, considering how young he still is, and it’s bound to come out again. Or not. I have been wrong many times before :)

I think I’m leaning 55/45 Vera. But I think it’s close, and if Vera doesn’t win early I see him diminishing over time. He’s never been a guy tog et stronger over the course of the fight.

by Michael Rome on Nov 12, 2009 9:12 PM EST up reply actions

After rewatching Couture/Lesnar, I think Randy will overpower Vera and control him in the clinch.

I don’t think Minotauro had ever rocked someone standing.

by JRN on Nov 12, 2009 9:04 PM EST up reply actions

He knocked Werdum down multiple times IIRC.

by Michael Rome on Nov 12, 2009 9:10 PM EST up reply actions

Other than the Mir fight, has Vera EVER rocked someone with a punch at any weight class?

by Jeff124 on Nov 12, 2009 9:28 PM EST up reply actions

the Mir fight was started off by kicks and knees..

the punches finished him, but he really didn’t “rock” him by punches.

by Anton Tabuena on Nov 12, 2009 10:09 PM EST up reply actions

the combination that rocked and dropped mir was started with a straight right hand i believe, then kicks and knees and ended with punches on the ground

by Jeff124 on Nov 12, 2009 10:39 PM EST up reply actions

Oh wait, I think you're right..

Now that I think about it, I think the combo did start with a punch.

by Anton Tabuena on Nov 13, 2009 2:16 AM EST up reply actions

He knocked Werdum down multiple times IIRC.

That’s true, but I think those were more due to timing and catching Werdum off-balance than impact. By which I mean that I don’t think Werdum was really wobbled. He recovered more or less instantly every time.

by JRN on Nov 13, 2009 6:00 PM EST up reply actions

yeah, well Vera isn't really a boxer.. He was trying to showcase his boxing in the K-sos fight, but look how it turned out..

still think he’ll outstrike Randy for sure though.. Randy’s best bet is to hold him down and eek out a decision cause i don’t think he can finish Vera, but that isn’t exactly an easy thing to do.

by Anton Tabuena on Nov 12, 2009 10:08 PM EST up reply actions

While a Bisping loss would be devistating, Hardy is coming off wins and would not be hurt too much.

They also have Pearson and Wilks fighting. Now if all four lose, it could be ugly.

by Lynchman on Nov 12, 2009 10:17 PM EST reply actions

I have no idea who will win this fight. When Vera fought Jardine I thought he looked horrible, but that may have just been becuase he was fighting the weird and awkward style of Jardine.

Will Randy just take Vera down over and over again, holding him down and imbolizing him untill he gets the win? For some odd reason, I think Randy likes to tell everybody that he going to just try and wrestle his opponent and then do the opposite and try and box! If he tries to box with Vera I think he will get knocked out easily.

for all intents and purposes, just consider all my posts as works of satire.
