NFL Player Chad Ochocinco Asks Dana White for a UFC Fight Against Anderson Silva

Photo

The Cincinatti Bengals wide receiver tweeted:

"Dana this Ocho Cinco, I want to fight your #1 and #2 best fighters asap, exhibition to raise money for a charity of choice!!!!!!," Ochocinco tweeted. "matter of fact I want Anderson Spider Silva---please don't ignore me or you'll have to fight me yourself!!! Sincerely Esteban :)"

Dana White replied:

If you are really serious @OGOchoCinco, contact me. We'll put a fight together for charity.

I'd put odds against this fight ever happening at about 100-1.

that’s a fair comparison.

Not really.

When Dana signs Ocho Cinco to a contract for a sanctioned fight, then it will be a fair comparison. Until then, it’s just harmless chatter.

It’s a similar sort of “freak” show in that it would be trying to piggyback off an athlete’s fanbase from another sport rather than being in any way based on how the UFC brass think 85 would do in the octagon.

Walker runs a serious risk of hurting himself. Ochocinco won’t get hurt. Also members of the media will know that it is an exhibition match and it will not hurt the reputation of the UFC or MMA at all.

At best it would be a grappling match. The CBA would probably prohibit him from doing it. Then again the current NFL CBA expires at the end of the season. I think it should be Dana since he almost did a charity boxing with Tito.

Rashad just said he wants to do it.

by The Bronzeville Bully on Nov 11, 2009 9:18 PM EST via mobile reply actions

I don't even think the CBA matters...

it’s almost certainly built into Chad’s contract that he can’t participate in dangerous activities. It’s built in to almost every pro athlete’s contract. Even things like riding motorcycles…etc

Those contracts are designed to protect the NFL team from having to pay a player while he is sidelined with an injury from doing something stupid. The Bengals won’t care but it will have to be after the season ends.

I think A.S vs Ocho would be great.
A.S would be a brilliant representative of MMA in what would be quite a publicised event.
Can you imagine Ocho using his straight boxing, and A.S going all matrix on him? The view of MMA changes in the eys of countless NFL fans, and Boxing fans.

Of course he isn’t Floyd. I think to see someone trained in boxing going against a MMArtist such as A.S who will no doubt put on a crazy show. I think fans of boxing that tune in, and fans of Ocho would be very entertained, and most definitely more likely to watch a MMA fight.

Chad johnson is a character who does anything for attention him fighting one of the best p4p mma fighters in the world would be a joke and regardless of how much attention and publicity it got it would make MMA look more like a fad and a gimmic than a long term contender in sports.

by pitbull187 on Nov 11, 2009 9:39 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t think MMA is, or should be concerned with being a fad or a gimmic. I think it is still finding it’s niche but popularity has slowly been growing for years.
It is little peices such as this that create bursts of popularity, and I don’t understand why they should be discouraged.

Sure, if it was about ‘Storylines’ or ‘Characterisation’ then I think MMA would be loosing it’s essence.
This? This is a fight for charity man. This isn’t a celebrity coming into the ‘MMA House’ and fighting for a chance to get immunity and have the other voted off.

In every combat, team or ball sport there is always ‘Celebrity Charity events’.
If anything this just helps solidify MMA’s presence in the sporting world.

Not only that, but this helps emphasise that MMA isn’t just about hurting people, creating pain and having a good knockout-reel.
In that same respect, a charity fight like this helps show that athletes in MMA aren’t just bogans and rednecks who wants to slam faces, but are athletes.

I feel bad for Rashad for even replying to this.

If there was anyone in MMA talking about how they wanted just “1 game as a New England Patriot’s cornerback” and talked the talk, everyone would laugh it off and not give them the time of day.

Here we are trying to legitimize our sport and we have these cross sport freak shows trying to drum up popularity for their favorite tax receipt and we all clap our hands like retarded monkeys saying “GOLLY, THIS IS GREAT.”

Well it’s not great, this is a serious sport and these people who don’t train who think because they are decent at their sport, that it makes them great at every sport, time for a wake up call, stop giving him the media attention for his brash boasting.

This is the kind of fraudulent behavior that puts the sport behind, because you cannot make a sport a sport while having these side show attractions for whatever reason, it just reduces the integrity of the sport and the fighters that try to publicize their names by being involved with these tirades from other professional athletes.

So to all MMA and BJJa/Strikers, stop taking offers from people without fighting experience that are trying to bolster their revenue for their favorite tax receipts or latest popularity craze, it is doing the sports NO favors.

How is that any less correct than the American Footbal usage?

Its a defensive position. You don’t really hear it used that often anymore.

In the olden days there were three tiers to your team’s layout:
Forward (offensive end of the field, now usually called Strikers),

Halfback (mid-field plays that play between offense and defense and are responsible for ball control and distribution in addition to offense and defense)

Fullback (defense, usually called Defenders today and actually play in a diamond with a stopper, sweeper and two outside defenders).

Let the guy do an exhibition or something, raise money for a good cause, post flashing red signs that say “Exhibition” and everyone wins. Ocho gets to help raise money for charity and show off what a phenominal athlete he really is, the UFC gets some more mainstream exposure via PTI, Around the Horn, etc. and the world, most likely, doesn’t end.

I say, give him what he wants, and make it a real fight. The UFC is stuck on who Silva will fight anyway.

Either way it will be a work. There is no way, even if this guy had a shot, that the UFC would let Silva be touched.

I even had doubts in my mind about the fight between Silva and Griffin.

As Dana White’s empire grows, I feel the risk of the fights being fixed growing as well.
I fear that if things keep going as they are, UFC will be more and more like WWE.
