The Week in Quotes: October 25th - 31st

DON'T SELL YOURSELF SHORT, JUDGE, YOU'RE A TREMENDOUS SLOUCH
"I give the fight to Machida in a very, very close fight." - Professional MMA judge Cecil Peoples, explaining his scoring of the Machida/Rua fight from UFC 104. (MMA Weekly)
"My thing is, Rua did hit him more. But Machida hit him harder, especially in the early rounds." - Peoples, showing off his pocket sized force calculator.
"You have to keep in mind we always the favour the fighter who is trying to finish the fight, and leg kicks certainly don't do that." - Peoples, who saw Yuji Shimada refereeing the fight. (Cage Report)
"Lyoto made Shogun come after him, he determined where the fight took place which in my opinion constitutes as effective Octagon control." - Peoples. Machida's reached a level where he can elude the Unified Rules.
"Now you’re pissed off because it’s my fault that you lost your money. No, it’s not. It’s Machida’s fault. If you don’t like it, you can go to hell." - Peoples.
SO I GOT THAT GOING FOR ME, WHICH IS NICE
"I kind of look at it as a car dealership." - Black House manager Ed Soares, dressed in cheap plaid suit. (Yahoo)
"When you look at the car dealership, well, thank God there are Toyota dealers. There’s nothing wrong with Toyotas. They’re great cars, reliable cars, but there are 3,000 of them on the lot." - Soares
"Walk into a Bentley dealership, though, and there are only 12, 15 cars in the place. " - Soares
"There are two things about that: The guy’s walking in to buy the car, and you know they’re not going to be negotiating price when they’re buying a Bentley. And that’s how I feel about our fighters. You want one of our fighters, you’re going to get a high-performance fighter." - Soares.
WHAT ARE YOU, RELIGIOUS OR SOMETHING?
"When they hit you on the floor? That doesn’t make any sense, it’s savage." - "Raging Bull" Jake LaMotta, sharing his thoughts on MMA. (NowBoxing.com)
"It’s out of control, I still think the regular way is the best way." - LaMotta, the regular way being allegedly beating your wife. Civilized.
YOU'RE NOT, YOU'RE NOT GOOD, AL. YOU STINK.
"It was a complete, utter defeat." - Former consensus number one middleweight contender Yushin Okami, on a lopsided decision loss to Chael Sonnen. (MMA Mania)
"Though I try to improve and diversify my training routine, I probably hit the ceiling at some point." - Okami
"I have the option of uprooting myself and training overseas… if I continue to train in Japan, I feel that I will end up becoming complacent, so I want to go back to square one and challenge myself. I feel that there is a need for me to train with training partners who are bigger than me." - Okami. You mean to tell me there aren't plenty of 6'2", 200 lbs men walking around Japan?
DO YOU TAKE DRUGS, DANNY?
"It’s a great matchup. I eat Jiu Jitsu guys for breakfast a lot of times." - Karo Parisyan. Now, is that before or after the opiate cocktail? (Fight Hype)
"I don’t know him as a person, but he looks like a nice guy." - Parisyan, on upcoming opponent Dustin Hazelett.
PARTING SHOTS
"I never said he received special treatment besides what everyone already knows, besides the treatment he's already received." - TUF 10 contestant Roy Nelson, wanting to let you know that he never said that Kimbo Slice received favorable treatment except for that time he did say that Kimbo Slice received special treatment. (Watch Kalib Run)
"Nah. I'm not interested. If I wanted to sell my soul, I'd be a Christian." - Jason "Mayhem" Miller, on returning to the UFC. (USA Today)
"I could get him up to speed on the ground wrestling part of it, while he could take advantage of his boxing talent." - UFC legend Randy Couture, on training Ricky Hatton for MMA. I'm sure you can teach him grappling at all-you-can-eat fish and chips over at Crown and Anchor. (Manchester Evening News)
"I will punch Shinya Aoki in the street." - Joe Stevenson. Please do. (Cage Writer)
"No, I watch the ultimate fighting, though." - DMX, when asked if he watches MMA. (Bloody Elbow)

Raging Bull is in my Top 5 Films list. The opening credits are damn-near perfect.

I like the film, especially Pesci, but I wouldn’t even consider it my fave Martin Scorcese movie.

that of course would be Goodfellas, with The Departed and Taxi Driver coming in at a close 2nd. RagingBull and Gangs Of New York would be in HIS top 5. The Aviator is a sleeper that i really like alot. i still think the 1rst Rocky was the best boxing movie i ever saw. :)

The Departed is not in his Top 5 – it’s all fluff. Very good fluff, but not much intellectual merit, especially next to his other films. A minor Marty is still better than most others’ masterpieces. In order:
1. Raging Bull
2. Taxi Driver
3. Goodfellas
4. King of Comedy
5. Mean Streets
(GONY would be there if 1) no Diaz or Leo & 2) no romance, though the opening fight is spectacular.)

You sir, have blown my mind. I now have a new leader in the “what I would walk out to if I was a fighter” song list, as well as an urge to go hulk smash my old roommate for stealing my copy of Gangs.

Considering The Departed is remake of some Asian film
It technically wouldn’t be his fault that the film doesn’t have much intellectual merit.

Not true.
Consider his remake of Cape Fear, and how he creates a mutually-destructive cycle out of a simple revenge thriller. Also, watch Taxi Driver to see him improve on The Searchers, creating much more nuanced characters.

Machida vs Rua wasn’t the only close decision, Razak Al-Hassan vs Kingsbury was very close too. I just talked to Razak and he agreed that Cecil Peoples has a mind of his own, and he said he didn’t understand the judge decisions that night.

So a guy that lost a close fight via decision didn’t agree with the judge’s thinking? I don’t believe it!
by ufc4 on Nov 1, 2009 10:33 PM EST up reply actions 1 recs
maybe people’s shouldn’t speak out at all about the scoring of his fights that he judges. he doesn’t have to, but seems to be the only one willing to do it with any kind of regularity. i doubt if there is anything he could say that would come close to satisfying the people who disagreed with him. fans want judges to speak out on how and why they score a particular fight they don’t agree with them on. them giving thier reasons just seem to make it worse.

Cecil peoples didn’t really convinced me, to say the least. He probably can review all his fights and affirm he never scored one round wrong, and explain why with this exact same method.

how do you exactly determine who hit harder? yes, it's b/c the sweat off rua's
forehead went farther in the air.
by wolfmanshowlforever on Nov 1, 2009 9:59 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
nope
b/c he squinted harder when he got hit, measuring sweat distance/trajectory is just silly.

Does cage report publish real quotes?
Look at their past quotes, i think most, if not all, are fake.. The tiki quote. Hopkins quote, mayweather quote (which came from an imaginary press conference that was only covered by cagereport), and Ken shamrock starring at catcher in the rye movie..
Also, there’s one guy in the UG that always links them to people first.. If you want to know who owns the Troll site, he’s the prime suspect. Haha :)

I know who owns the site because I contacted them and Mayweather’s people and got the mayweather article tagged with a “there is some doubt over this…” before getting taken down.

To be fair. I haven’t always agreed with Cecil. But the treatment he gets from MMA fans is absurd. I mean, the shit where people say he’s a bad judge. Fine. But the personal attacks are a bit much and I’m sure it has put him in an ultra defensive mindset

i love when people turn other people's words around
in the manner of something that one would say himself. we all know what peoples was saying with the hitting harder point. frankly this is getting a bit ridiculous and i can’t wait for next weekend so we can get on a new topic. The decision wasn’t a robbery, and peoples was one of three people to see the fight the exact same way. and score it the exact same way. Rua is getting another chance at the title, when the first shot wasn’t justified at all. but because he performed better than anyone expected, the hot new bandwagon to ride is to say rua got robbed. if rua’s kicks had slowed machida down in the earlier rounds and been a deciding factor for the rest of the fight, i.e griffin vs. rampage, then the fight could’ve been different. but machida wasn’t slowed down immensely until the end of the fourth and the fifth rounds, and apparently did enough damage in the earlier rounds to win them. so he won.

I’m not sure if this is directed at me, but I’ve been one of the staunchest defenders of Machida/Rua not being a robbery. Everyone’s fair game for humor though.

To be honest though, I just don’t think that there can be many crossover athletes from boxing to MMA and vice versa. Boxing is too concentrated on just using the hands, and MMA isn’t focused enough.

You have to keep in mind we always the favour the fighter who is trying to finish the fight, and leg kicks certainly don’t do that.
umm ok, Ask Anthony Hardonk if leg kicks can stop a fight or not
Lyoto made Shogun come after him, he determined where the fight took place which in my opinion constitutes as effective Octagon control.
So by his reasoning, Kaleb Starnes won his fight against Nate Quarry, making someone chase you is not effective octogon control, it just means you are trying to evade or run from your opponent.
I give the fight to Machida in a very, very close fight
Proof that the champ comes in with a built in advantage, and more reason to change how fights are judged, or atleast create some form of unbiased judging platform.

umm ok, Ask Anthony Hardonk if leg kicks can stop a fight or not
actually I might be thinking of Brandon Vera here, anyone remember if it was Hardonk or Vera that ended one of their first fights with leg kicks?
by proflex on Nov 2, 2009 12:39 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
It was Vera
and I think someone mentioned this before, but just because you can name four or even ten fights that ended by leg kicks, doesn’t mean everyone throwing leg kicks intends to finish the fight that way.
For better or worse, you see someone throw an overhand right, a high kick, a left hook, a high knee or an uppercut you think “this fight is almost over.”
You’re average person(and in this instance, judge) sees a leg kick as a jab or a takedown that sets up a finish, not the actual move that would end the fight.

So by his reasoning, Kaleb Starnes won his fight against Nate Quarry, making someone chase you is not effective octogon control, it just means you are trying to evade or run from your opponent.
There is a HUGE difference between the way Kalib fought and the way Machida fights. Now I’ve had my share of disagreements with how Peoples judges, but in this case you’re twisting his words. You know full well what he meant.
Also, just cause Peoples gave it to Machida in a very close fight doesn’t mean Machida had a built-in advantage. It was a close fight. Could have gone either way. Unfortunately there is no way to create a form of unbiased judging platform. So long as humans are judging, there will always be some sort of bias, whether it’s favoring the stand-up over the ground game, or some other bias.
