MMAjunkie.com has learned from sources close to the organization that main-event fighters Fedor Emelianenko and Brett Rogers are set to appear at Sunday's Chicago Bears vs. Cleveland Browns game at Soldier Field in Chicago. The pair will also be interviewed on the CBS Football Halftime Show.
Emelianenko and Rogers meet on Nov. 7 at Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Ill., a suburb of Chicago.
Additional sources close to the network indicated that the dual appearance will kick off a late flurry of marketing efforts to complement the advertising that is already in place.

I want to see Fedor play football.
for all intents and purposes, just consider all my posts as works of satire.

I’m usually pumped about seeing Fedor fight, but this one hasn’t hooked me yet.

Everyone shit the bed when it came to CBS advertising this card. “Oh no CBS doesn’t care about us” WHAAAAAAAA, cry about it. Why the hell did so many people think they would they be running ads, like crazy, a month out?
Of course they are plugging it now, it’s a week away. The paranoia fans have regrading networks being iffy about MMA is way misplaced.

Yeah, because MMA has made such a big impact on network TV.

Because that’s how you properly market a televised event.

Right. How many ads did we see for that “V” show on NBC a month before it starts? All the cable networks promote the new seasons of their big series (Jon and Kate, Little People Big World, Girls Next Door, etc) weeks in advance. They don’t have to have an ad every other commercial break but they could have said something about it sooner than a week or two ago when they started the ads.
by ufc4 on Nov 1, 2009 11:30 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Those are ongoing series
Whereas this is one event. A weekly series will have ads running while its on the air and will be able to pickup viewers as time goes on.
They’re only doing four or so of these a year which doesn’t lend itself to sitcom marketing techniques I think.

The Super Bowl™ is one event, do you think they will only advertise that for a week or two?
by ufc4 on Nov 1, 2009 1:17 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Actual ads? Yes only a couple weeks since you don’t need to do much for awareness. Station spots will run all year not for the Super Bowl™ but to brand CBS as the “network with theSuper Bowl™l” (wow! It must be a good network, it has the Super Bowl™).
On a related note: CBS is broadcasting the Super Bowl™ this year. Feb. 7th. Strikeforce has said they would like to do another CBS show in February. What are the odds of a Feb. 13th Strikeforce show on CBS? How cool would a Fedor spot during the biggest sporting event of the year be?

Yeah! They can advertise the return of Fedor after his shocking knockout loss to Brett Rogers at halftime of the Super Bowl!

One day man, one day ...
The Superbowl is an event on a scale beyond any athletic event in the country. An event where people who don’t even watch the sport get together and have office events to watch it. There are news specials about the commericals that will run during it.
Are you seriously thinking it requires brand awareness and marketing like Strikeforce? I’m gonna assume you’re pulling my leg :)
by asa on Nov 1, 2009 4:10 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
The fact that it is just one event (that they are hoping will become multiple events) is the very reason that they should of been pushing the crap out of this for the last month. A couple of ads during a couple of football games a week out from the show just isn’t going to build any buzz or get the casual fan’s attention even and that should of included commercials on more than one channel and in more than just a couple of football games.
I went to the CBS sports page on MMA and there is a big picture of Machida at the top of the page, under the title of “What’s hot in MMA” they have pictures of Machida and Lesnar, there is a note that Fedor is fighting under that. Come on.

Everyone “shit in the bed” over CBS’s advertisement of the card due to the fact that it has sucked so far and even this apparently was half assed. If they are wanting to actually build this up as a regular tv event for CBS then they need to get the damn word out that it’s going to happen. Has anyone seen any advertisement yet that didn’t involve a NFL game? This show is a week away and they are just now getting around to trying to get the word out, that is pretty pathetic for a sporting event.

Watching Bears/Browns and they didn’t do Fedor/Brett at halftime. Saw a commercial for it though.

haha...
No, I’ve not been a Bears “fan” since I was like 8. I’ve been a Bills fan since the first Super Bowl loss (the first game I ever watched start to finish as a kid). I did live in the Chicagoland area for a few years so I follow the team pretty closely just based on them being the team that I can get on TV every week.

Hey. 5-3 is legit! Buffalo sucks. Our defense gets like 18 turnovers a game and the offense manages to turn that into a couple field goals every week.

I just realized
With all the hype surrounding Fedor, what’s being forgotten is this is Rogers homecoming (even though it’s 1 hour and a half outside the city). Has Strikeforce, even tried to get Rogers some local publicity?
by The Bronzeville Bully on Nov 1, 2009 2:56 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Rogers will be on the cover of Minneapolis City Pages on Wednesday. I will post the article and cover shot here.

He moved out of Cabrini Green to live with his grandma in St Paul when he was a kid and doesn’t have fond memories of his time in Chicago.

The neighborhood has been cleaned up like crazy over the past few years. You can walk two minutes away from the remaining Cabrini buildings and be at 1mil+ townhouses, but back in the day you’d be hard pressed to find a more dangerous place to live. Pretty sure Chicago still has the highest violent crime rate of any city, and the projects were worse than south side or the gangs in the west.
I’m not surprised at all that Rogers doesn’t rep Chicago as his hometown, probably wasn’t kind to him.

Just did some cursory research
And it turns out that it all depends who you ask and how the survey is done. The general consensus supports your statement, but it’s not unanimous. Forbes listed Detroit as the 12th safest city in the country, while Chicago was number 15. Also, the per-capita violent crime numbers are diluted by the urban sprawl of Chicago, triple the total population, and some incredibly safe and well policed areas within the city limits (Lincoln Park).
All that said, both cities have plenty of “roll up the windows” areas.
